Today I installed the twin air compressor from ARB in our 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-Road. Overall, this wasn't too difficult of a project, however, if working with electrical wire makes you nervous, it's probably better to have a professional install it for you. For the rest of you up to the challenge, here is a video showing you a possible location to mount your compressor, a great mount that I used to mount the compressor to the truck, and how to wire everything together.
Here is a list of the parts used in the video:
ARB Twin Compressor w/ hose and digital tire inflator: www.amazon.com...
GTFO Expedition single/twin compressor mount from Rouge Off-Road:
rogue-offroad....
Shoutout to my dad for letting me work on the truck at his place and helping record while I put everything together!

I got my bracket from M.O.R.E Moutain off-Road Enterprise's they make a bracket to mount the 1 gallon arb tank and the compressor on top and mounts directly to that triangle bracket on the fender with the studs

Good Stuff. I am about to install the same in my 2016 4Runner on the passenger side rear spot in my engine bay. Like you, I had a tough search finding the right brackets and went with M.O.R.E fabrication out of Colorado. Also putting a 1 gal air tank in as well. The vid really help verifying purple to red in the cab and the add-a-switch. I left off the blue wire as I felt the switch did not require illumination but now I think I may add it. I owe you a beer when I see you on the road!

You have the red wire and red/yel wire backwards on the on/off switch. Red wire should go to #3 and red/yel wire to #2.

Dude! Great catch Robert! I had to watch my video again to see if I had actually switched them and I did! It's weird that it still worked though. Ive been using my compressor on plenty of trips since this video and it worked just fine! I have upgraded the set up a little and replaced the rocker switch with a Switch Pro 9100 so this issue is fixed anyway but good catch man!

Nice work bro. I did the same thing and went with the Slee compressor Mount with the manifold. Then I rerouted my coupler with the Rock Your 4x4 remote fitting kit and their Sherman cap to protect the coupler. Mounted it to the side of my steel bumper so I don’t have to open my hood anymore. Take a look at Power Tray. I’m running one with my switch pro on the right side of my engine bay and doesn’t get in the way of my engine relay box. it’s nice and organized. Don’t have to run wires through your firewall anymore beside the switch pro. Everything right to the switch pro.

Nice dude! Ya I've got a switch pro that I still need to install. I'm going to be putting it exactly where you put yours. I've just been too busy to get around to it lol. Did you wire it yourself or have someone do it? Trying to decide if it's something I could even tackle. And that's awesome about your compressor mod! I was actually thinking of doing the same OR running hose through the frame and putting nipples next to each tire so I just attach the hoses to the frame and all four tires and let them air up/ down together. I think it's called the wifey system or something. But yeah, not having to lift the hood would be a huge plus!

@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound 2 года назад
Great question! So obviously you're not going to want to dump water and soap all over it but I usually clean it just like I would cleaning the engine bay. I use a few different brushes and some vacuum attachments to break apart the dirt stuck to it and then vacuum it up. Then I usually use lightly damp paper towels to shine it up a little and get rid of any remaining residue. The two round disks in the front are actually filters so you can swap those out if you think it's been awhile.

Hey Scott, great question. You're talking about the ARB manifold for lockers right? I THINK it's possible but I'm honestly not sure. It would definitely be tight but without having the manifold to test fit, I dont know. This is something that I've been considering doing in the future and as much as I like where the compressor is right now, I've seen some nice set ups that utalize all of the empty space up in front near the grill. But as of where it's at right now, I'd say it depends on the mounting bracket that you use to mount the compressor to the truck.

@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound Год назад
@@DavidIJ I don't want to say 100% yes but technically, I would THINK yes, you would NOT need to deal with punching through the firewall to get to the cabin. BUT I believe you would need to wire the red/yellow and blue/white wires to the fuses in the fuse box under the hood. I just don't know which ones. If your looking for a less permanent mounting solution, ARB does make portable dual compressor packages that you can carry around to different vehicles and temporarily connect them to the car battery when using.
@DavidIJ

@@HorizonBound I think I’m just wondering what the advantage of a switch inside truck instead of close to the actual compressor under the hood. I think it would be more convenient right by the compressor so that I don’t have to go back in to truck. I don’t plan on installing air-lockers.
@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound Год назад
@@DavidIJ It's definitely all personal preference. I've seen a lot of people install the switch next to the compressor and it works for them. My final plan with my set up is to make it so I don't need to open the hood to air up at all. I plan on getting the wifey air system soon so all I'll need to do is plug four small hoses from the frame hose outlets into each of the tires and I can hop back in a warm truck while watching the guage on my dashboard. But I also do a decent amount of snowwheeling so Id rather be inside waiting, rather than outside next to the compressor and switch. But again, all personal preference.

@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound 3 года назад
Short answer, yes and no. Long answer, I bought a Switch Pro that I'm going to be connecting the ARB to but in the meantime, I had bought a single rocker switch panel bracket that I found on Amazon for like $6. Since I knew it was going to be mounted temporarily, I didn't want to screw it into the plastic so I tried using some heavy-duty velcro patches that worked for a few days but after light driving around town, it would fall off constantly. I ended up switching to some heavy-duty Gorilla Glue tape and that stuff has been amazing but my foot would always knock it off when I'd be driving so I mounted it again with the Gorilla Glue tape but further back, out of the way of my left foot, and it's been perfect. I've taken it offroading at least a dozen times since the install and I've used the ARB just as many to air up after and everything is perfect. I'm hoping to install the switch pro this coming weekend and do a video on that so I'll be giving an update on how everything has held up over the past few months as well as how to hook it up to the Switch Pro so stay tuned for that video!

@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound Год назад
Thanks! I appreciate it! The mount has held up amazingly well. No issues or concerns. I MIGHT eventually sell it in the future but not because of any problems with the mount. I've been considering moving the ARB mount to a new location so that I can utilize the little pocket (where the compressor and mount currently are) for a dual battery set up. I really want to have a secondary battery to power all of my accessories rather than putting the strain on the main battery. But as for the GTFO mount, it's been great and I've actually bought more items from this company as of lately. Great customer service and really fast shipping. I highly recommend them.

@HorizonBound

@@dougwood3157 Hey Doug, great question and I actually don't 100% know. IMO, if you already have a dual 12v battery set up, I'd think just buy the 24v compressor. I think when I go dual battery, I might have to sell my 12v and go 24v but I think it also just depends on what kind of dual battery set up I go with. I could get the Genesis Offroad kit and get two Group 34 size batteries which I belive still works with a 12v but if I had two 12 volt batteries and they were wired together, Id go with the 24v ARB.

The ARB twin unit looks like a very nice unit. However, I don't know why in 2021 anyone would install any compressor! For less cost, just kit up a 10 lb CO2 tank system and you'll never look back. The ARB twin flows at 3 CFM @ 90 PSI. A CO2 Tank with a 250 PSI regulator flows at 45 CFM @ 120 PSI. You won't have all that dead weight to carry around permanently on your rig and the CO2 system will absolutely blow away any compressor on the market. It will be faster and will be portable in case you need to help out a buddy on his rig. In addition, a CO2 system will allow you to run air tools both on the trail and in your garage and you can't do that with your compressor.
@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound 3 года назад
There are definitely some pros to C02 over the ARB for sure. I spent a decent amount of time trying to decide which route to go. A C02 tank can definitely air up a tire much faster than a compressor but for me, I didn't want to have to keep filling the tank before each trip. I read that a #10 can usually get about 20 tire fills or roughly 5 trips but when I go hit the trails, I'm usually helping out a friend air up because not everyone can afford a tank or heavy duty compressor, so they're usually using a little harbor freight or Kobalt compressor that will take an hour to fill all four tires lol. So now I'm only getting a good two trips out of it before I need to fill it up again. With the ARB, I don't need to worry about running out of air, just over heating. And usually I'm able to air up about eight 275s before the compressor is getting too hot. The portability of the c02 is definitely nice but I havent had any issues airing up bike tires or rafts. I did put some thought into air tools too and how if I had a tank, I could take the tank wherever I needed my tool to be where the compressor, I'm limited to about 20 ft from my truck. But then I thought about it and almost all of my tools are battery powered Milwaukee tools so I don't really need a tank for that either. Id really only use a nail gun for an air tool because I have a battery powered impact wrench, circular saw, grinder, and oscillating multi tool but Milwaukee has a battery powered nail gun too now lol. But I did buy two air tanks that I plan on mounting on the truck just in case I do want to use air tools. One that will go under the compressor and one placed in the back wheel well that I will add an inlet to into the bed so I can use air tools in the back without having to turn the truck around. Not sure if it will ever get used, but I have them. I looked at prices and I could DIY a C02 tank for a few hundred but if I wanted a Power Tank, that would roughly be the same price as an ARB depending on the size of tank I got. Compressors definitely arent for everyone and when I talk to my offroad buddies that are looking at compressors, I also recommend c02 tanks because it might work out better for them that route. For me, a compressor fit my needs/ wants better even though it might be a little slower than a c02 tank. I'm still able to fill up a 275 from 15-35psi in about a minute though and with the morflatte I have now, 4-5 min to fill all four tires... thats perfect time to get a roady out of the cooler and let the dog take a piss 😜
@LWRC
@LWRC 3 года назад
@@HorizonBound If you're concerned the CO2 tank may be low before your next off road trip - get a 2nd tank. Very few of us go off road more than 2 times per month. In addition, the sheer amount of energy available in a 10 lb tank is pretty amazing. Yes, those Milwaukee battery impact drivers are pretty amazing but I'd still rather bet on the reliability of a CO2 tank system. No batteries, no chargers, no heat related issues. Just a simple regulator that isn't likely to fail. One more thing that most people haven't considered using a CO2 tank system - the ability to air up tires on all other vehicles you own. Using a two hose connection, I can air up the front tires and the rear tires to different pressures if the manufacturer recommends it. The ease with how the CO2 system handles and the absolute monsterous flowrate makes it an easy winner in my book.

Does air leak at the quick disconnect? I installed a similar way and seem to have a slight leak between the disconnect and the compressor. There is a 1mm slight bump a quarter inch out from the screw hole in the design on the compressor that doesn’t seem to be letting me screw the disconnect all the way down. Any suggestions? I was thinking of putting a rubber washer first and then screw it down. I can’t install the quick disconnect mounting bracket since there isn’t any room left in the rear pocket of my Tacoma where the compressor is installed.
@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound 3 года назад
I haven't noticed any leaks on mine. I did have to use a larger tipped screwdriver to get the quick disconnect tightened in all the way. That with a good amount of teflon tape and it's been working flawlessly. If you did that and it didn't work, I'd try reaching out to ARB and seeing if they'll send you a new quick disconnect or seeing what they suggest. Good luck!

Thanks for posting this video. For installing the add a fuse tap, how do you know which fuse slots to tap into? Do you add the fuse you pulled out into the add a fuse? That part of the install is a bit confusing to me. Thanks!
@HorizonBound
@HorizonBound 3 года назад
Hey Christopher! Yeah, that part can get a little confusing. I didn't go too much into detail about that because it can depend on how you're wanting it powered. Some people choose to tap into the cig lighter or their taillights. If you're installing into a 3rd gen Tacoma and want it installed like I have it, and you want the compressor to be "hot" even if the truck is off, you're going to be adding the add a fuse into the fourth circuit down on the right hand column which is a 10A. Next, if you want the switch to light up when the truck is on, then you're going to add a fuse to the first 5A fuse at the top of the left hand column. To add the fuses, you'll just take out the fuse in the fuse box under the dash, and for the 10A, you'll have two 10A fuses in one add a fuse, and two 5A fuses in the other add a fuse. Then you plug them both back into their original spot. So 5A at the top left and 10A in the right column, fourth down. Hopefully that helps!

@@HorizonBound thanks for the additional explanation. I have a 2018 4Runner and oddly I don’t see the cigarette lighter fuse on the inner fuse box. I have other power fuses and light fuses. I think I can add a fuse to the 7.5amp gauge or 7.5amp panel for the lights, but I only have 10amp fuses, so I’m not sure if I can put a 10amp fuse or if I need a 7.5-amp. For the power-the only 10amp fuse is the KDSS (which I don’t have on my vehicle), ignition, ECU ignition, tail lights, backup lights, and towing backup. Not sure if any of those would work for power. I’d prefer not to tap into the ignition fuses just in case there’s an issue. Do you know whether I can put a 10amp with a 7.5amp?

@@fjnomad Apologies if this is a stupid question but I'm going to ask it since I'm not there to actually help out in person but have you tried hooking up the hose from the compressor into a tire and tried airing it up? The reason I ask is because the compressor DOES start up for a few seconds making the BRRRRR noise and after a second or two, "shuts off". It will kick back on again once you squeeze the trigger on the tire inflator letting air out of the compressor. Since the compressor doesnt have a tank mounted to it to fill up, it doesnt stay "on" like a garage multi gallon air compressor would.

@@HorizonBound Didn’t work. And when I press the button it doesn’t illuminate the top part. Thanks for your assistance, I will diagnose it more and see. I think I had it right then messed it up.

Nice video! How are you liking the air compressor? Looking to do something new and thinking about the Twin ARB. Easier to work with than the smittybilt one having to hook to the battery.

I love it. I've used it about a dozen times now and couldn't be happier. It's quick too. I've inflated all four of my tires from 18psi back to 35psi and then was able to help a buddy of mine air up one and a half of his tires in the time it took him to do his front two. I've got 33s though so it might be different if your tires are larger.

@@HorizonBound I have my buddie's Smittybilt one that clamps to the battery. I feel bad for having it for so long so I want to get something for myself. how quickly does it air up each tire?

@@4WDTrek I definitely recommend the twin compressor over the single if you're looking at ARB. I've heard the single just can't really hang and personally, the reason I went with the dual is to speed up the process. The little Kobalt compressors or Harbor Freight compressors will get the job done but will take like 5 minutes per tire or longer. Not sure how quick the Smittybilt takes to inflate but the twin ARB I have inflates my 285/70/17 KO2s in about a minute and some change. Total, I think it took about 6 minutes to inflate all tires from 18psi to 35psi. I'm making a quick video of how I air down and air up and the tools I use so keep an eye out for that in the near future.

@@HorizonBound Thanks for the information. I'll likely be picking up the dual ARB then. The smitty is about 2 min per tire from 18psi to 35psi. Its a work horse and works great. I just don't want to have it bouncing around in the back anymore and want to hardwire something in.

@@4WDTrek It's definitely nice having it mounted to the truck. I had looked at getting the portable ARB compressor that came inside a case with a 1gallon tank included and liked having the portability but realized that even though it's portable, it's going to take some time to unpack it, unravel all of the hoses and wires, connect it, and then start airing up, where having it mounted got rid of all of that except plugging in the hose to the compressor and to the tire and you're good to go. The whole point of getting the ARB for me was to speed up the process and I think it has. If I went the portable way, I'd still have to be connected to a vehicle's battery in some way so it just made sense to mount it.

Where it normally is. There were no modifications needed to be done to the manifold for this install.
