In this video I install a new insulated ceiling to the underside of the roof joists in my new garage workshop which has a pitched roof. Mainly doing this to block noise from a nearby road but the insulation will help both acoustically and thermally too. I will later create a loft space for additional storage.

And just as you really got good at it ... the project was over. ADDING: If you have to crawl around on joists, place some boards across them to support your weight, and remove them as you crawl backwards out of there.

Fun tip: when you fall through a ceiling its alway good to close your eyes and have a little guess where you’ve ended up (also turn off table saws beforehand)

If you insulate your walls make sure you leave a cavity , good job double the wool up in your ceiling , If you put wool directly on your block walls it creates a bridge for dampness and water to seep through, Batons with dpc and a insulated board or even a frame out from the walls but you lose space,All the best mate can't wait to see it finished

Oh wow - cheers for the shout-out dude - that was a nice surprise! 😀 Total coincidence but the vid I put out today shows a pic of how I had to do my ceiling using precariously balanced lengths of wood to hold the boards up while I screwed them in place. Didn't die though, so bonus. 😆👍👊 Your ceiling looks great! And btw, mine is 12.5mm boards on 600mm centres and no sagging after 6 years. 👍

I'm happy to hear that 12.5mm on 600mm centres is okay... just replaced on old ceiling like this. I added a few batons onto the floor joists where two boards met, to give me more space to screw the boards. I went with about 6" between screws and managed to do the ceiling and walls of a 3.5m x 6m x 2.4m room in about 1000 screws. Might have been a little overkill, but I'm sure I read 6" somewhere and the plasterer was very pleased with the boarding, so can't have gone too wrong!

Great job. Many years ago some factories made one-man-band sheets of plasterboard. I think they were only 1 x 1 m. That plaster board lift saved you a lot of time. Maybe the time per sheet (for one sheet) was effectively the same but since you had to hold the weight of the plaster board only a short time, it saved you a lot of energy. Thumbs up for the seller who was so willing to help you solve the issues you had with it.

I think I've found a good series to follow. I recently moved into a house with a 29m2 workshop, which will need a ceiling an insulation, so it's good to watch someone do something similar.

If plasterboarding a ceiling it’s best to use foil back plasterboard than normal, still works using normal just you gotta trust that the roof will hold up and no leaks will come through otherwise the normal plasterboard can get wet very quickly and may get a belly in it or even break, foil back will help to stop that going through.

I used a long canoe paddle to extend my reach to the outer edges of the roof etc, and it made a huge difference in stuffing the insulation batts much more easily. I also laid plywood strips across the rafters to support my body as I worked my way around, then simply moved them as necessary...made it much easier to move around up there, w/o the danger of falling through. And yes, it was way hot, so I tried to do most of my work during the early morning hours, whenever possible. I just finished the second layer above my 24' x 36' ceiling under a 4/12 pitch roof, so I'm pretty sure I know what you went through. I'm a long time subscriber and I always enjoy your videos, so it's nice to see you doing well and expanding into a larger shop. Keep up the great work, and hello from Minnesota, USA.

I don't mind plaster boarding walls, but ceilings, they're a different beast! We plasterboarded the ceiling in one of our rooms with 10ft ceilings, and it was an absolute nightmare getting the boards up, especially when the ladders we had were sketchy at best! And to top it all off, we used the fire resistant plasterboard which is quite a bit heavier!

Thanks for the shout-out Keith. I really like your approach and the roof vs walls insulation decision. I’m sure that’s the right way to go, roofs are poor in blocking sound. Anyway I published my build video earlier which folk can find if they follow the link you put in the description.

Well Keith, you made that look like hard work, not gonna lie lol. Did this for a living for about a decade. Still have to now and again. I would be a very poor man at 5 sheets a day but fair play, you're doing it mate and you aren't being paid per m2, so taking your time and having a bubble with your brother is the important thing. Excited for you...and a bit jealous! Love that you were eyeing the pallet for the boards! Still the old Rag n Bone Brown.

Try not to use an impact driver on plasterboard, it hammers/vibrates the screw into the plasterboard. Which disrupts the plaster inside and will loosen the screw over time :)

Great video.. The workshop is really coming along proper exciting stuff... Don't want to tell you what to do or pick.. But try decorators chalk if that's the path you want to go down.. Paint will not stick to silicon sealant!

I am a joiner and had to buy one of those board lifts and I like you thought I would sell it afterwards, three years later still using it as it works on all types of ceilings not just level ones, great bit of kit when your on your own.

Have you checked the size of your electricity supply to the garage? At the 11:18 mark, you can see a pretty small looking cable going into an old school fusebox. I'd seriously urge you to have your sparky mate come over now, before you board up and advise you. Think about your worst draw, likely your planner and dust extractor going at once and have him do some rough sums. I obviously don't know the layout of your place, but it doesn't strike me that running a length of decent size SWA (armoured) cable, 10 or 16 mm^2 from your house would be too hard. You could then run sockets in surface mounted conduit to where you need them. Sparky can then connect it all up for you and test it. It doesn't need to be expensive, but do it now before you install everything - believe me it's orders of magnitude harder when everything's installed. Oh, and if you're going to do that you might as well run in a 32a socket for a future EV.

Yup, I use a sharp kitchen knife and it cuts through like butter. When I used a saw I spent half the time unclogging the teeth!

As someone whose put up 100,000's of m2 of dry wall and insulation, I swear by a nice sharp machete for rockwool. Particularly on the 100mm+ stuff. A trick brought back from Norwegian comrades. Was an absolute game changer on larger jobs.

I got lucky way back when I did renovations and construction. I was never involved in hanging drywall/plasterboard on a ceiling, which is great, because I did this work in New Orleans where the houses had ceilings at 12-18 feet(3.6 - 5.5 meters) Just doing crown moulding was a dangerous adventure

When I renovated my first house I was boarding about 3 ceilings a day then plastering 1 ceiling each night and not 1 person offered to help it was just me and 2 wooden home made props but the property was empty which makes things so much faster

Why do you think the trusses can take the extra weight of the boards and loft storage? Did you get a structural engineer? My garage is double length with the trusses running lengthwise, and I don't trust them at all for weight bearing. I built a separate frame just to hoist kayaks.

I don't know your situation in the UK but, here in the US most hardware and "big box" retailers (Home Depot, Lowe's...) have bins or jars of drywall screw tips near the registers, and they're CHEAP! I don't hardly ever do drywall but I have 5 or more of these tips floating around in my toolbox. Cheap and easy!

Maybe a stupid question, but why not insulating between the joists first and then applying the plasterboard? Is it to make sure no gap is present between insulation and plasterboard? Also, how did you insulate the last part?

Always take a scaffold board into the roof long enough to lie on so your not on the ceiling joists

Thanks for the video. I have to do the same in my garage and your videos are always well thought through and presented. I liked the T shaped support. For the cost (can reuse CLS timber for other projects e.g. an assembly table) it's basically free? If I couldn't find a lift, I would be tempted to use two sets of a T shaped support + rope to pull them in together - as supporting a large sheet of plasterboard doesn't look fun. Is it a good idea not to have goggles when sanding off the filler (above you) as it probably goes everywhere? I have table-saw and thicknesser + single brick garage, open roof (no plasterboard yet) and ventilation slots that just look like "speaker grill" - I sometimes wonder if it blocks any of the noise e.g. from neighbours. I've not found any data on suppressing noise e.g. for this type of project as "try it and see" (with U turns and changes) can quickly get expensive. One tip I picked up from your video is the difficulty of adding insulation around ceiling/wall intersection - so might be tempted to add this before filling in the centre section etc. White ceiling is good too.

Why plasterboard? I could understand if you were going to skim it, but why not plywood or OSB - are they not easier when you want to ceiling mount things?

Just started a garage home office conversion and been looking for good vids on plasterboarding rafters. What size joist do you have there if you don’t mind me asking. The ones in my garage are 35x95 and I am wondering if I will need to sister in another one next to it to get enough space to screw adjacent boards into.

Yeah I heard 50mm gap was recommended, although it’s difficult to judge that when you’re trying to crawl under a low roof balancing on joists that are 600mm apart!! 😂 hopefully it’ll be ok

Looking good. If you weren't filming, I would say you are ok without insulating the walls. Given you are making videos, are you really sure you don't want to add the insulation in the walls? It's not easy to change and fix afterwards.

Rag 'n' Bone Brown if you weren't filming, I'd say you are fine. With the video, I would worry about background noise and do all I could reasonably could to minimize background noise. Of course, after the ceiling is done you could do some filming during busy traffic just to double check audio quality.

@@RagnBoneBrown Oh you are building the wall inside the door? In that case, no troubles. I was worried you would have issues. I wanted to remove my garage door and build a wall and put french doors in, wasn't allowed to do it without planning permission which I was told would likely be refused.
