Installing baseboards is one of those projects that I'd rather not do, but it's not something I can skip. So, in this video, I share ten tips to help you install baseboards faster and better.
It's important to note that this process isn't about rushing; it's about working efficiently and effectively to measure, paint, cut, and install your baseboards.
One of the most important tips I have here is to batch your processes, meaning measure all of your baseboards at once, cut all of them at once, and install them all at once. This saves you from having to go in and out of the house repeatedly.
Many of my other tips are about HOW to batch the process without messing up. You'll learn how to get perfect corners without making multiple cuts.
Be sure to watch my other videos about installing baseboards (linked to below), which contain more helpful info to help you to install your baseboards like a pro.

It seems organized and if it works, would save a lot of time.....BUT, from my experience, you cannot get really accurate, tight joints by using a tape measure. Getting tight joints requires super accurate cuts that can only be done by using the baseboard, tight to the corner or the previous installed board and mark it to where it needs to be cut on the other end (etc.). A hair thickness (almost) is the difference between a tight joint vs. one that is too long or too short. And that's just my opinion.

Use white caulk and a damp rag when filling the nail holes. Covers them and blends with the bright white trim paint. Do not skip this step . Painting the holes does not look good. Plus, you said to paint prior to install to avoid a mess or risk of...so why would you want to risk it dabbing paint here and there?

It depends on the house/customer. I once did a bamboo flooring and baseboard job in a master bedroom for a single young woman with 2 kids. The ENTIRE house was a MESS in EVERY room, including the master bedroom. I didn't bother filling the nail holes. Customer never said a word about !! Thanks for the great tips !!

Yes, and don’t be afraid to have the conversation upfront. If the customer is willing to pay extra for a meticulous install, then sure, fill the nail holes. Otherwise it’s pointless on baseboards.

I can’t believe you said no coping, also mdf is shitty product, if it gets wet it goes to the shit. No filling nail holes? You are clearly not a carpenter

to make measuring between two walls easier, cut a 10" piece of baseboard (10" exactly!). lay it flat on the floor against one wall and measure from the opposite wall to this spacer. then add 10" to what your tape says. this eliminates trying to judge where the correct length is from looking at your tape as it curves into the opposite wall. for example: tape says 113-3/16" from the wall to the spacer, add 10" to get the true distance to the opposite as 123-3/16". i'm a big fan of making things easier by not thinking too much in the field...

I number each piece and put a sticky note on the wall with the same number or make a mini map with all the cut board pieces numbers on the corresponding wall.

Interesting video. Probably won’t watch the “how to cut perfect inside corners” because I think we have different ideas about perfection. I treat all jobs - and customers - as high-end regardless of project cost or home quality. My INfluence and integrity are worth far more than affluence. I don’t think cutting corners will generate increased income over the long term as your name will be associated with “average” or “subpar” work. High-end earners rarely want average handy people fixing their homes.

Good call. I think maintaining high quality is essential as a pro when servicing homeowners (especially wealthy homeowners).

Hello Mr. Handyman, thank you for the helpful video! I watched this video and used your tips and tricks. This is my first "rodeo" when it comes to base boards and using my husbands' miter saw. Everything turned out great, I only messed up two little pieces. Thanks again.

Sure, in a world with infinite time. But going the extra mile on things that don’t matter leaves no time for going the extra mile on the things that do. I’d rather invest the time with my kids.

@StayHandy it's hard to believe you willingly put your face on the internet while you tell people that others do a more complete job. You learned from the wrong person, or decided it was OK to cut corners wherever you could get away with it. HACK

Hey Dan, you have a few good points, but!….some of what I heard was use 1 1/2” nails, an 18gauge brad nailer, nail into the shoe plate of the wall and don’t fill your nail holes. I think this is what might separate the DIYer from the skilled craftsman. I have to say you wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near my house.

Not trying to be that guy but if you have a 16ga nailer you have a finish nail not a brad, brads are 18, finish is 15 and 16

Now i know what to do if i ever get so hard up that i have to do production work. Tip #12, get a carpenter that takes a little pride in his work.

Easier to stick the baseboards to the wall with building adhesive, no nail holes. Prop up with some weights overnight to let them set in place.
@StayHandy
@StayHandy Год назад
Interesting. I have my doubts about it being easier.
@joedean9834

Not to mention getting enough "weights" to prop it all up AND avoid any bows and gaps.

I'm removing old baseboards and am eternally grateful someone did not go the "easy" route and use adhesive instead of brad nails. I would be looking at major torn paper drywall repairs, which I would have to pay for, if I could even get the baseboards off by myself.
