I noticed that you trimmed the welded corners of the windows after you removed the nail fin. There is actually no need to do that. That weld is taken into consideration with the window width when ordering. That is why the mull pack takes up 1 1/8" of space instead of the 1" that is the call out. Also trimming that weld could lead to unwanted leaking into the structure if trimmed too closely. Also removing the bottom sashes makes the windows a lot less cumbersome, and more maneuverable.

Shannon, your comment is very helpful. At age 75 I am about to embark on 3 wide (24 / 48 / 24) x 48 high and plan to do (mostly myself) to a 1950's home. Fortunately the opening looks like 48 x 96, so it should work well & possibly stock Jed Wen windows from Menards.

Nice miniproject. You save a lot of money with it. On dealing with the weight you could remove the upper and lower windows them, then once you have secured the frame roughly in place, put the windows back in. Oh one more suggestion from experience. Several of my uncles always worked top down in order of window (and glass door) installation. One of the reason they did that... I recall when I was 10 or so watching one of my uncles drop a sawzall while installing an upper window..and he made to grab it..and it wound up being knocked through as in smashing through the lower window for the first floor. Since you already installed the lowers, maybe use some scrap plywood to cover them when the uppers are installed. Its not likely that anyone will break them but better safe than sorry.

Helpful video,,,,but joining the windows to the mull bar is suppose to be done with self tapping screw from the inside of the window causing mull bar to sit flush against each side of the window per the illustration in the "instruction". And yes the instructions suck.. By using caulk to adhere both side of the mull bar, the caulk widened distance the plastic snapping trim is suppose to snap to, making it difficult snap that piece in as you showed. But there are many ways to skin a cat,,,and you got the job done.

You're going want to pull the stickers off the window. Especially if you've got special coatings. The sun can cause some issues so the sooner you can get the coating off and the stickers the less likely you might end up with designs in your glass.

Hi Andrew, Great video! Very helpful! I'm planning to replace a triple window in the living room (3, double-hung) and was struggling to figure out how they go together. Now I know! Question about the challenges of installing the molding strips (around 6 minutes in): I realize this is years after the fact so you can't test it. Do you think it would work to "compress" it into place? Start at one end and "squash" it in with a ratcheting clamp. Protect the molding on top, and the frame on the bottom with some flat wood. Once the first couple of inches are in place it might be possible to hammer it in, one inch at a time, working along the length. Thoughts? Thanks, Rob

Here's the better tip, remove the bottom windows via the quick remove clips provided and the weight in half. I didn't think about d4ipo6the bottom halves out.

I am currently trying to install 3 aluminum Ply-Gem windows with Mull Bars and what a royal pain! I set the first one in with the mull bar in place. Then when I set the second window on the sill the two windows touch at the top with a 3/4" gap at the bottom. I have a side gap between the framing and the first window and have it resting on the sill with just one screw securing it at top center. It is driving me bonkers as to why the two are not mating up.

@@TKCL Well it turns out the two windows measured 69-1/4 by 69-1/2. So swapped them out with ones that measured square. Just tried putting the first two in and same dang problem. They meat at the top but not at the bottom. Used a laser lever and the first window was plumb. No idea at this point what the correct cure is. But if I can get all three in the opening and they open and close with no effort I am calling it good and just buying more trim to cover up the weird gaps.
@bnme4779

@@dremwolf5419 I'm sure you have already installed the windows but if you are resting the windows on the sill maybe the sill is not level? You need to use shims between window bottom and sill to level it.

Perfect timing as closing the house in during the summer would have made it miserable to work in there.

Ok - You have me curious. You have "over done" so many things why didn't you insulate inside the metal tubing in the middle of the windows? You have thin plastic, then metal (a thermal conductor) and then plastic. Where is the insulation? I was expecting you to stuff the pipe with insulation, styrofoam or spray foam to keep the R-Value up. Is that really a good Air Leak prevention system. I know you put in silicone but will that keep out the drafts?
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 года назад
I am, I wanted to do it with more insulative closed cell foam. I am out of it and have already ordered several cans. The top and the bottom of the bar is still open from the outside and I can inject the foam with my gun. Foam is set to arrive middle of the week.

Andrew did you say the bar between the windows got screwed into each window wasn't sure thxs
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 года назад
On some windows yes, these models didn't have screw holes. I'll admit I drilled and made some myself. Took the screen out and shot a couple screws into that track, into the bar. Otherwise the holes that were in the bar are for clearance or access to the window screws that already exist.

I am not sure if they make bar for doing that. You could probably frame out in wood and accomplish that.

Negative, don't have to be. You have to be in a higher wind zone here and near the coast to be required to have impact rated windows.
