Would it be better in the long run to continue the downspout to the ground instead of on the lower roof? Won't the water shooting out of there raise the shingles or wear them out faster?

I'm a 58yr old female. I live alone in the North Minnesota woods on acreage. I have a huge 2 story, 4bdrm farmhouse and I need new gutters. 5k for the beautiful black seamless ones I WANT. But in the meantime I just need to replace a few failing sections. Thank you so much for such a clear, concisely put together vid. I actually believe I'll be able to manage. 🙋🏼‍♀️💞

I like your duck and spider! To get the slope, you can put a tack every 10' down the facia, 1/4" lower each one, and snap a chalk line between them and follow that.

The most important issue you guys need to know. Do not use Water based seals. Use a VOC/ polyurethane sealer. I replaced the gutters when I was 14 years old in 1995 and they still do not leak. Contractors who have installed them as a little as a few weeks ago have developed leaks.

Thank you so much for instructing on how to install gutters. I never ever done something like this but is so true that instead of paying so much money is we can do that we will definitely save a lot of money. I thank you for even letting us know of how much you kind of spend and how much you could of cost you to have someone to install it for your Home. This Increible job really give me an " idea" on how to install gutters and how much money I can save. Thank you so much.....God bless you and your family.

1/2 for every 10ft just snap a chalk line before you hang the gutter and it’s a lot easier to keep a consistent slope

Thank you so much for the video. I found this very helpful. I appreciate that the video is "Home Depot specific". That's where I am most likely going to buy my supplies. I would have probably purchased vinyl but have changed my mind because of your video. I also appreciate that you mentioned the rivet option at the end. I own a rivet gun and wasn't even thinking about rivet simply mentioned it. DUH! It's arrogant of me to make a suggestion being as I haven't done this yet but I think you could accommodate the small section pasture downspout by simply adding a small section of gutter and pitching the end up in the opposite slope. That would give you something to catch that small section of rain and pitch it to your downspout. I would think that would be easier than trying to punch a hole and add your own downspout.

The drip edge should overlap the back lip of gutter. To do this you have to clip the hangers onto the gutter in their proper locations prior to lifting the gutter and sliding it UNDER the drip edge. To get the proper slope you may have to notch the drip edge above the hangers on the high side.
@Varifyable
@Varifyable Год назад
Instead of notching the drip edge just install the hanger over the drip edge then fasten through both the drip edge and gutter.

That’s what I was thinking. They do have to go under the drip edge. And piecing these together in place will not work. If you have to have them slid under the drip edge. Either way this is a very helpful video. There is more than one way to skin a cat. it just depends on how waterproof you want your cat skin to be.

You can seam gutters together without a connector. Takes a little snip and a couple sheet metal screws, but it works well and saves on the cost of the connectors and is one less seam, ultimately
@jonathangoin
@jonathangoin 4 года назад
Phil Timpson I am getting ready to install gutters on my house. Could you elaborate on your statement? It seems that the majority of the cost is in the fittings and corners. The 10 ft pieces are relatively cheap. Thanks in advance.
@vincentdow5899
@vincentdow5899 3 года назад
@@jonathangoin I think he means: don't use a coupling connector. You can just lap the upstream gutter channel OVER the downstream one. I lap them by 4" - and then pop in a stainless steel self-tapping screw (small) through the widest, highest facing edge of the front. At the point i grab the backs of the gutter together with a vice-grip, flip it over and pass a screw through the back. Silicon, or polyurethane caulk under the lapped joint. This way looks much better than couplings... and couplings create a potential leak. 4" lap with silicon will never leak.

Great video! I will caution you about the corner by your air conditioner because there will be a waterfall off of that part of the roof and could damage your AC and electrical. You should have it go just past the edge of the roofing to catch all the runoff.

Nice job for a first timer. Like others mentioned, the ladder slope is dangerous. Rivets will last longer than the screws. 1/2" slope for every 10' of gutter. Start just a little lower than the dripline to keep the water from coming back under the roof. Use a chalk line to mark where the gutters will go. I agree with using the downspout insert vs. the adapter to make it look cleaner. I'm sure you saw and heard all the "pros" on here so I'll shut up - lol!
@biggstile
@biggstile 4 года назад
By dripline, do you mean shingles or drip cap?
@TheFuelInjected
@TheFuelInjected 2 года назад
If you're doing 1/2" Slope for every 10 ft you get a maximum of 40 ft at best of trough before you're hanging the trough below the fascia line. It also doesn't account for the actual roof surface area that eave is shedding. Rivets are also a terrible idea, unless you want the professional installer who has to replace your work to charge double for the removal and probable replacement of fascia as well.

When dumping on the roof, try to get down to the roof (instead of a foot above the roof) if you are too high the water will knock the grit off the shingles and drill through the shingles. Put the gutter clips in on the ground (ideally look for rafter location by looking for nailing on the trim board and match the rafter locations and spacing). Having the clips installed on the ground will make it even easier to install by yourself.

Your high side should not be all the way to the roof. If snow or ice comes off that roof it’s gonna take that getter with it. Take a straight edge. Level or whatever and slide it down the roof until it meets the front edge of the gutter the drop the gutter down the facia board until the straight edge clears the front edge of the gutter, this will allow the snow or ice to slide past the gutter in the winter.

You want it as high as possible. If you have it as low as you say water will just fly over the gutter. If you screw the gutter with hangers 2 feet apart. Long screws and zips in it. Also seamless gutter. It’ll be fine unless there is an excessive amount of snow or ice. Which would have damage the gutter either way you do it.
