@@helldabs Legit that was the first colour I thought of when he said vibrant, although I kinda feel like a nice gold would match the top hats of the shocks and make them pop more too
The sound of ITB's always pulls on my heart strings, nothing sounds better than that. Paint the stacks silver and wire all the filters with a twisted set of wires but all of them linked together, so it's " loop, twist, bridge, loop, twist, bridge" and so on.
This engine is so going to sing on the dyno! The sound of a BMW with a straight six and ITB's is as a sweet old skool racecar sound and it has some magical vibe to it. If it doesn't give you goosebumps when this engine is revving high and sings, you are either death or no carguy
Aluminum stacks are pretty cheap, certainly cheaper than the oem airbox you hacked up for macaronis. BTW they're tuned for the flow in the box, outside they're just like any stacks the same length. Nothing beats the sound of itb's tho keep it up 👌
Honestly what has happened to this channel man. It is seriously seriously good to watch. Watched from the start and now every single video is the best car content on RU-vid hands down nothing touches it. Big big love from 🇬🇧
@@Synthetic-Chicken It is the same, even if you tie them, the issue is that they get sucked in and break off, maybe it can be aliviated by having some kind of steel mesh on the inside keeping them from going in but still, those things are far from stellar in terms of airflow so you better just run without filters (unless you plan to run on a dusty area) or get something decent like one that is like a dome that covers all of the stacks, that gets way more surface area so it allows more air without sucking the filter in
Some filters come with coil springs inside that don't impede airflow but help keep the filter structure and keep it from being sucked into an engine. These need to be pulled all the way down on the trumpets and lose a little filter surface area, figure a way to internally support them from flexing and being sucked in, or go with some others that already have internal support. Super sweet build and I love that you're embracing the NA power on this car! Good NA motors are some of the most fun, even though you make less power than the turbo build! And that sound bro!!!
Make a mold of the stacks and cast them in aluminum, sand/polish them then make a custom housing to go around them with a large single inlet so you can use a big cone filter. that way you can angle the filter in a desired direction for optimal cold air and you're less like to hydrolock the engine in less than desirable conditions.
@@ryanbrunell7078 100%. I love that he’s doing it but what I meant is that not a lot of people are willing to throw that at ITB’s for the gain you may or may not get. Plus like Jimmy said sourcing the stuff a lot of time is also half the battle. Wasn’t trying to take away from the idea at all.
Question: shouldn't there be springs inside those filters to prevent them getting crumpled under load or possibly getting sucked in if you were to go full throttle for a long period of time?
Yeah it should be internally supported to prevent it collapsing, also the spring keeps the filter the right distance from the opening AFAIK. And it should be secured, too. On the other hand those filters were recommended to Jimmy so can just blame that person if something goes wrong 😇 Hopefully nothing bad happens and we get to hear some wide open itb sounds soon!🤞
Build a heat shield for these stacks! You'll be pulling a ton of hot air without one. Pretty easy to build a small shield out of aluminum or something that goes under and in front of the velocity stacks and directs flow from the factory location
White would honestly look dank if you can keep em clean, but silver or black are solid options that will be less of a pain So excited to see how good the throttle response is with those!
Don't use the factory stacks Jimmy!! (PLEASE READ) I'm an aircraft engineer here at Boing in Orange County, CA, As well I've owned 3 s52(s) over the years. (1 currently) Long stacks are not friendly to the s52 platform when at atmospheric pressure. Shorter trumpets allow for more direct power at higher RPM's, which these engines drastically need. They carry an even powerband at lower RPM's but with these cars being pushed above 5k revs, they slow off power around 4.8k - 5.2k. For a more linear powerband, shorter stacks are a must.
Its funny, The Rolling Stones actually have a song about painting oem bmw trumpet stack things. The songs called "Paint it Black". You dont even have to think about it Jimbo, the Stones already figured it out for you
*Whenever you drill in situ like that just have the vacuum cleaner pipe running next to it. All the drillings will be sucked up out of harms way! I used silicon hose and made my own long velocity stacks using the factory ones at the end.*
Just an idea for the injector wiring. If you still have your m20 take the ignition wire case and use it as a case for the injector wires. I think it’s smaller than the injector case
Highly HIGHLY recommend throwing those sock filters in the garbage and either running them open, or getting a large filter housing. Every single person I know whos ran those has had them fall apart and get sucked into the intake or close too it, myself included (BEAMS 3sge ae86). They'll work for a while but then they tear at the glued ring on the top circle piece. OUTTA HERE WIT DAT
Jimmy should make a video of him trying to do his normal thing, but he’s got one of the shop boys yelling from over his shoulder/in other stupid places in the shop. And they’re yelling things certain commenters say. Like when he was doing that oil pump on a BMW engine, and he wire-tied the nut left hand, someone in the back’s like yOu TiGhTeNeD iT tHe WrOnG wAy or WhAt aBoUt OiL sTarVaTiOn!!!! Make it like an April Fools video or some shit 😂
Reckon you can get those horns 3d scanned (sounds space age but it's pretty common) and then machined? Would be a great way to get ones that you know will be the right shape without spending as much as some places charge
Get Jonny to make you a set of stacks and paint them the German flag colour for bmw. An them socks are going to restrict the air . With them stack on take them off
