Hi everyone,
In this video, I test fit my Kibler Colonial Rifle barrel and do some minor chiseling and fitting. I plan to break up my work on this rifle into individual videos, so stay tuned for the next one!

Your timid ness and ease of going into the build is exceptionally honest and refreshing, Take your time there is no rush and in the end you’ll know your strengths and weaknesses. I have built about seven rifles in my day and believe it or not each one feels like my very first time because in your minds eye we all want to do the very best we can. Carry on and I hope it all turns out well.

Well! That wasn't too difficult was it? I find that inletting black very messy and hard to get a good indication with, a sooty lamp/candle gives a far better coverage of even deposit, there is normally a few thou gap at the rear of the tang, but the back of the breach plug must be fully touching the head of the stock, I can see this is making you very relaxed after a hard day at work, it just makes you switch off. I really enjoy the process and plan to get back to the kit this winter!

Pete just a reminder when using the Laurel mountain Browning solution. Humidity is a must to make it sticks to the metal parts. I live in Colorado with virtually very little humidity. I filled the bathtub a third full with hot water made sure the steam was out and left the door open about six or 8 inches and let it sit for about three hours it turned out very good. Do not immerse the small pieces in the solution it turns them a copper color and required to be redone.

Thats amazing, i work with electricians every day first time i have seen one use a hammer most of the time they use pliers. You learn something new every day. Dont sell your self short better to go slow and do a great job, then do something you regret. Keep up the good work.

Pete did you give up on your Keibler kit ? 🙄I have not seen any new posts! I had a big problem getting the pins to match up I turned to one of my blackpowder club members to help me out. The jig that Jim provides didn't work out for me. Iam looking forward to your finished kit.

Hi Dan! Thanks for checking up on me. I got a bit sidetracked due to some medical issues with a family member. I’m planning to get back to it soon.

Coming along slowly Carl.. going to try and keep moving forward in small increments and film while working. Maybe I can make it look so easy other folks will give it a try!

@@completepete looking good so far! Seems like all the fitting flew by ok mine and now that I'm in the finishing stage it's dragging by! Lol! His kits are pricey, but definitely worth it for a beginner! Be careful though, next you're gonna build one from a slab. I know I'm already planning the next one before the stain is on this one 🤣

Pete what gave me a problem in my Southern mountain rifle build was drilling the under lugs and pining the rifle. I ended up having a friend help me that had a drill press. The little jig that Jim provided didn't help me much. I ended up enlarging the holes in the stock for barrel travel instead of using the jewelers saw. Good luck with yours!!!!🤔

Pete I was lucky my smr had very light mill marks on the barrel. I just sanded and polished and came out great after I browned the barrel. I experimented on the bottom flat and made a mess with the draw file.
@completepete
@completepete 3 года назад
Dan, I was wondering about the draw file work.. I think that I’ll give sanding a try first since it worked well for you.

Pete careful when using the iron nitrate my stock turned out darker than I expected! Don't count on the practice pieces that Jim supplied. Use a little of your barrel channel to determine what color your rifle is going to be.

Thanks Dan.. that’s great advice. I’ll be sure to include that tip in my video when I get the the finishing step (with credit to you of course)

I shot my Southern mountain rifle for the first time today. Wow I was very impressed with the lock time and the front sight being perfect. Hats off to Jim for producing this excellent rifle kit!!!! What a fun build!!!🤗

Dan, that is great to hear! I was wondering what the accuracy would be like and if the front sight would need to be filed.

Wouldn't you want tight fits... just saying why remove if it's all flush?
@completepete
@completepete 3 года назад
Hi Nate. The first go around the barrel did not quite seat all the way back. I've seen some folks chisel off every ounce of marking compound. I actually left a lot still on the wood. As you said, and I agree, we want a tight fit.

Pete it's a good idea to order a extra set of screws from Lorie when finishing your kit. When taking them out and end they get messed up.

Dan, you had mentioned that to me a while back and I did have her send a full spare screw package (along with a spare frizzen and springs) it was great advice!
