In this video, we work on completing our chicken brooder building by enclosing the open wall using the lumber and siding we milled on our Norwood sawmill.

Troy the siding turned out nice. You should have your DOG out there with you, you will have more people watching.

Putting a straight door on a crooked coop. True farm carpentry. Could put a doorstop trim piece on both sides of the door to hide the cracks.

I put one at the top. Probably will do the 2 sides once I get a better latch.

The door needs a door stop. Trim goes on the outside of the wall boards. not butted up to it. Especially with green lumber. As it dires it will shrink opening up gaps.

Nice work, the siding looks great. I love using my sawmill to make my own lumber, we are in the process of making a hoop house out of wood from the sawmill and are designing a chicken coop and sawmill shed which we will use all our own lumber. Thanks for sharing.

Now a folding door to let chicks out when big enough and then extra wood means covered space off the back side for a wheel barrow, some shovels, rakes, fence tools a spare fender for side by side if you have one... I always put a small space to store a few things that took a month to unload. Nice job
@RedToolHouse

Yes, this will be used for storage of hand tools. I have to reclaim parts of my barn that are full of things!

Looks good--how much did you lap the siding.

Hey Troy, Great looking job on your little building. Really makes me wonder why you swung your door to the inside. A small building with manure and hay build up could make it tough about getting inside should something cause your door to be blocked.

Argghhh. Who would think to install the trim BEFORE the siding??. now I have to disassemble my 1/2 done outhouse. Seriously..

I was taught with lap siding you out the corners on first so you can have cleaner edges.

@@RedToolHouse that makes complete sense, but how do you predict shrinkage with milled lumber? My next project is a solar kiln, but it wont work for another couple months here in Montana. Thanks doe the video.. I should’ve watched it first..

I know it’s only a chicken coup, why not put in the Jack studs in the window and door framing? I’m not a carpenter, just curious. Looks good though.

This wall isn't load bearing so I didn't mess with it. We don't have snow load issues here in our part of the state.

My dad was left handed...when I was a teen he wanted me to dig a certain area... I held the shovel out to him and said, “I can’t use this because it is a left handed shovel.” Oh boy! He didn’t appreciate that one bit!

Loved watching another one of your videos. You know what else I'd love? One of those hats with your logo. I looked on teespring and your website and didn't find any. Do you sell them or will you be selling them in the future?

Just curious.. why open the door in verses out ? I have mine open out..
@ubetchya78
@ubetchya78 4 года назад
Troy did say there would be a wall to hold the chicks back to the one side, and storage of feed, etc, on the side where the door is... That said, I would still prefer the door to open outwards. That way gives you more room inside to store stuff without having to worry about the door being able to open. Also it is harder for a predator to pull a door open than it is to push it open. OTOH it is easier to push the door open if you have your hands full of feed and water.

Most exterior doors swing in. I debated making it swing out but that would impede the person standing on the step (to be built) and it would put my barn hinges on the outside (or limit the swing on the inside). Plus, I am left handed so the whole world seems backwards to me...
