Don't forget there are people, myself included, who not only enjoy educational video but also enjoy seeing a project being completed. There's a certain satisfaction to that. Also your subscribers like you and enjoy getting to hang out while you work. I for one also hope you don't ever quit making videos. Thanks for doing them. FYI, I recently completed some Sheetrock and drywall work for a friend that looked perfect because of the things I learned here. ✊🏼

My father put me on to your channel, and he and I would watch your content when he was sick. He loved your precision, honesty, artfulness and work ethic. And he’d be the first person to agree that you’ve got to do what makes you feel the most congruent with your ideals. Make content for you, and there’s plenty of us who are happy to watch/learn/grow as we watch over your shoulder. Dad was one, I’m another, and theres thousands more that will click the moment a notification hits.

You might have been doing videos for 6 years but I discovered you channel only two years ago. I suffered two major water damage events. So I started looking at videos to learn how to do drywall. About the same time my eldest son bought a duplex and renovated it. Guess what, we are both perfectionists, and we both ended up signing up to your channel without knowing it. Why? Because you’re the best! We both learned a lot by watching you on jobs. And we sincerely thank you. :))

The internet has reverted me to a giant toddler. When someone tries to click bait me I will do the opposite and unsubscribe, have the channel stop being recommended and purge it from my history. With your channel I do the opposite and look for older or less popular videos I haven't watched to try and push a few more RU-vid bucks your way. But I'll always keep coming back to your channel because of the authenticity, humility and sense of humour. Really enjoyed this latest series of talk and tape. If that's what the channel becomes I'm all for it.

You are exactly right. Some of these sites were great I have permanently removed them. You can see someone with the largest followers. Soon sell out and I am at a total loss. Besides there is absolutely no reason for hour long footage. Hell, at least Ben responds I began watching mystery clips. Loved them great comments, interaction, then Patreon. I loved to listen to the elderly as a child, or just sit and hear their stories. Practically no one cares about anyone else and it is sad. Cheers 🍻 Ben!

Real work in real time. Showing problem solving on the fly. Showing the time involved and the patience needed to do things right is what we come for. I watch too much RU-vid for my own good sometimes but I always enjoy your type of content. I have watched for years and have gotten so much from your videos..I have been able to do small remodels without fear of the drywall. I enjoy doing drywall and even patching into existing areas. I went thru my son’s townhouse before selling it and patched and repaired all the problems. In Washington all of our finishes have texture that you don’t have in BC so more time spent fiddling with patches to match in. I was an Electrician for 41 years so I understand the burnout. I always tried to maintain a level of craftsmanship in my work that is not valued many. Making something look good and not just get by is hard to teach others. You have done the best in your videos and they are appreciated. Thanks Ben

Succesful RU-vids have interesting content, of course, but they also (I believe) have a pleasing, interesting presenter. I have no particular interest in drywalling, but I subscribe because YOU are interesting and likable, and a master in your trade. I really enjoy watching an interesting person doing really good work. I hope you find a way to make your video work worthwhile. You make so many people happy.

There is art in all aspects of life. Construction gets a bad rap from subs that only want to do what they know and nothing more. I come from an art and design back round and have had about 5 different careers. I keep moving on in a creative way. I totally get what your saying and you need to do it for yourself or get out of it. After teaching, a professional musician, having a graphic design business, I'm a general contractor now. I do everything myself except plumbing and electrical. With your youtube's I consider myself an adequate dry waller and finisher. I continue to learn. I love the challenge, the movement, the materials and the solitude in going for perfection. Please don't stop. But follow your heart and path. Thanks for everything you have taught and are teaching me and all the other viewers that I'm sure have the same sentiment. Be well Ben!.

I'm a second-generation drywall finisher. I also went to college and became a corporate goon. I find watching your videos soothing and nostalgic. There are more drywall videos out there now than when I first came across your videos but yours are some of the better ones. I've recently left my corporate gig after 21 years and have been doing drywall again with my brother. I've applied some of the things that I have picked up from your videos. I prefer your videos, which reflect the traditional/correct/thorough ways of doing things, rather than production-based videos. I enjoy your content, keep up the good work.

You're the Bob Ross of drywalling! Not every video needs to be a ground breaking creative masterpiece - people will tune in to watch you expertly mud happy little trees over and over. Your calming "you can do this" vibe makes the videos easy and comforting to watch, and the depth of your skill/craft means that I can watch you explain basically the same thing 20 times, and I still learn one or two little things each time.

Hey Ben! I absolutely love your videos because of your knowledge, and ease of instructing people on what to do. The way you say things, and convey them, makes it very easy for someone else to digest. With that being said, I've been watching your videos for a couple years now, and I have learned so much from you it's unfathomable. Your tips, tricks, and information has REALLY helped me up my game in drywall and finishing. I actually love drywall now. I'm actually in the process of getting my Home Improvement License (in my state I need it for what I want to do) and open my own Handyman/Drywall business! I've been doing side drywall jobs and painting and repair work for a while now but I want to make it official and quit my full time maintenance job and work for myself! I'm super excited for the future, and I have you to thank for alot of it! Just so you know, I absolutely agree, there's only so many drywall tip videos you can make before it becomes repetitive. But I'd watch a video of you sitting there drinking coffee and telling stories. You're a very likable guy man. You have a very pleasant personality, and it always feels like I'm just "hanging with my bro's" when I watch your videos man. You are part of a very small percentage of people that do better for the world, whether you know it or not. But you've made my life better because of your videos. I just want to give you a huge thank you! I'm totally fine with just videos of the entirety of drywall jobs maybe time lapsed, with cuts to hang out and talk, maybe tell a story, etc. Whatever you want to do, do it for you, not us, and what makes you happy brother. Don't get burnt out. I hope you have a good day man! 🤜🏼🤛🏼

I took on, what was for me, a large drywall project last year. I boarded, taped, coated, and sanded an entire kitchen as my first ever drywall project. As a cabinetmaker with 15 years of experience, I wasn't sure that I'd be able to achieve my exacting standards that I'm used to. Using your videos as a guide, i was able to complete the project and be proud of it. I've learned so much from you over the past 3 years and I thank you for passing on your knowledge. Your attention to detail was a lighthouse in a dark harbour for me and I felt comfortable learning from you because I see a lot of myself in the work that you do. I'd love for you to keep going, but I totally understand where you sre mentally with this whole RU-vid thing.

Ended up becoming a carpenter! Recently I've had my second kid and took the time off work to do a bunch of renovations on my house and basically binge watched a bunch of your videos. So far I've drywalled my livingroom and built a new closet with drywall (as well as electrical and other projects) anyway I digress. Me and my brother love your videos man! I watch your videos mainly because they are your videos with you in them, i.e. not that much for titles, thumbs or content at this point. I enjoy watching you work, explain and make stuff look easy. You have helped me through my (neverending) house refurbishing project more than you can probably imagine. I am at the point where drywall stuff is not at all scary, and where I feel confident that I can get a result at least as good as or probably better than if I hired someone to do it for me (although it will still take me more time than a pro, obviously). All thanks to your videos! Now I mainly watch for entertainment and to keep somewhat in touch with how to do stuff without doing it myself much.

The technical information is only part of why I watch your videos... The humor, sarcasm, and your often times sacrilegious but always personable presentations are the value added that other influencers cannot match. I've been happy to egg you on..., e.g., your turning my suggested name for the LOAP project into an acronym for one. I've learned enough to fearlessly tackle drywall repairs and taping (which is a curse and a blessing as now I'm in demand by family and friends) so the entertainment dimension matters to me! Hang in there! ..even if you are an undesirable skater here in the states. 😉

I bought a condo in 2020 that had been well-used and mostly untouched since 1970. My first drywall project was tearing out the t bar ceiling and fluorescent lights in the kitchen, and doing all the inside and outside corners because under the plastic panels the whole thing was unfinished. Armed with nothing but your RU-vid channel and what I could buy at HD, I got a result that was way better than anything I had a right to expect. So thank you for helping a DIYer like me tackle something new. I smile just about every time I look at the finished product. And yeah, you’ve probably said the same thing so many times now in so many videos that it’s getting boring. Personally, I still enjoy watching you work on projects. Would love to see the end result more often! I’d also say that it’s easy to assume that “the audience” is one fixed group of people. But new people are coming and going all the time. I guess I was just lucky that I showed up as you were really gearing up lots of how-tos. Just because it’s the 500th time you’ve said it doesn’t mean it’s the 500th time your viewer has heard it. But also maybe it’s run its natural course and you want to move on to something else. That’s okay too. Life is too short to spend it doing stuff you don’t like. Nothing lasts forever. Just gotta appreciate it while it’s here.

Ben, don't get disheartened. People have been going back to work lately. I have been more busy over the past month than I have in 5 years. First you should make the content that makes you happy. I don't think switching it up will upset anyone. The ongoing joke is that you're named the Vancouver Carpenter and all you do is drywall. I've seen you skill set. I loved the video where you built the Santa Monica style grind curb. You've built a platform. Don't feel pigeon holed to only doing drywall. Build something fun, do a series of videos, take those sponsorships man, it won't change a damn thing but the money in your pocket. It's honestly the norm now. Have fun with some out side the box creations or videos. If those don't pan out you're still a drywall wizard and I'll always watch whatever you put out because you are highly skilled. Keep your head up brother 💪🏼🤙🏼

Overexplaining isnt required. Drywall is an art and if you get it, you get it. Your video's are very good at slowing how not to do a specific type of joint. They are a great primer for someone who is doing this once, or infrequently. Meaning your demonstrations are good enough. I learned by doing over the years with a little encouragement from tradesmen that I knew. Thanks Ben.

Ben, I sure appreciate your videos. My husband and his best friend did a total DIY on our bathroom in our 104 year old house. The house had endured a really bad bathroom remodel. We bought it with a leaking, non functioning, jetted tub and a narrow linen closet with a hole in the floor with a view into the basement. After the guys did their thing, it fell to me to do the dry wall pretty stuff. A wall between the walk in shower and closet had been cut back because the shower was Narrower than that stupid pudgy, oval tub. There were gaps where the drywall was patched in and a difference of 1/8 inch in the thickness of the dry wall. I was terrified of the project. Then I discovered you. I watched and re watched your videos. I learned how to fill a corner bead, how and when to use hot mud, float out the unevenness, use a hawk and trowel and pan and knife. THANK YOU! I love your professional ethic and the way you do your best. I am quite perfectionist and was able to do a job I am able to accept because of what I learned from you. All the best from the far North in Wisconsin.

I know I left a comment here last night, but for some reason it appears to have gone missing. I started watching your videos because I bought a house thats currently all plaster and lath, and Im slowly converting it to drywall, and I've learned a lot of stuff from your instructional videos, but I feel I've learned even more from just listening to you talk about life and doing your work without talking about it. It's different, shows me your technique, pace, and everything else how you naturally do it rather than taking it slow and step by step. You should also consider starting a Patreon where people can support you on a monthly membership, with members getting a behind-the-scenes video every so often like your new one at your house just talking about life. I would definitely support you!

Ben, I have been watching your videos from the beginning. I finished my own basement during COVID, I didnt tape and mud myself, it would have taken me 2 months at how slow I would have to go. But I learned how to hang drywall to make the tapers job easier. I am now remodeling my laundry, and am finishing the drywall myself this time. I took a step back after doing the final coat on a tapered to butt joint (lol), and said out loud, "holy crap, its beautiful! And flat!". Thank you for teaching me. You and Larry Haun will be in the construction educator hall of fame forever. I'll continue watching your content, I love watching a master at his craft. But, I have one request. I just finished watching your video all the way through, and caught myself scanning the comments section, eagerly looking for your likes and replies. Why was I doing that? It dawned on me it's because I get way more enjoyment from your personality and commentary than the actual projects, lol! I truly admire your integrity, work ethic, and humor. If you’re feeling like making videos is getting a bit repetitive and you're looking for new inspiration, you might consider asking your viewers for suggestions. My parents had a major water event at their house and the insurance companies drywall contractor did an awful job on restoration. Your education videos were amazing so we could get things all fixed up. This kind of simple, solution-driven stuff is why I love RU-vid, not for the influencer/burnout/content mill that much of it is. Thank you.

What makes you and your video's so great is you are just a normal person talking to us like we're hanging out with you having a beer and a good time. You're as real as it gets, not some internet fake. Here's an idea, how about video's on how to feather and match up to texture? I do a lot of repairs with lots of different textures, and still struggle to get the patch to blend completely into the surrounding area. Sometimes I've had to repair the same place several times due to unreinforced masonry buildings settling and/or leaky roofs (120+ year old buildings). By the time I've done 3 repairs on the same crack (even hot mud won't hold-up a 4-story masonry building), the wall is in its own zip code.
@vancouvercarpenter
@vancouvercarpenter 6 дней назад
I virtually never have to blend texture. We don't have it on walls and I avoid having to repair textured ceilings. I've done it but I don't do it often. Like once every few years.
@1984isReal

@@vancouvercarpenter I wasn't talking about ceilings, just walls. Everything from very light orange peel to very heavy blobs. I honestly don't even know how to texture as big as some of the stuff I see.

Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability in sharing your struggles with RU-vid burnout. It's clear how much passion and dedication you've poured into your videos over the years, and it’s truly inspiring. Your authenticity and willingness to prioritize personal satisfaction over algorithm-driven content is a breath of fresh air. Remember, the community you've built appreciates you not just for your drywall tips, but for the genuine person behind the camera. Keep doing what makes you happy-we’re here to support you every step of the way!

As a RU-vidr you always have the option to just roll tape and hope for the best, or you can spend the time sitting alone and focusing your mind well past the point of comfort! Best wishes Ben!

Drywaller/philosopher……😊 I love you, dude! Appreciate your candor and honesty. My husband and I just finished framing in an angled door for a bedroom and watching how you did these corners let’s us know we did it right. It’s an INCREDIBLY long story, of which I will spare you, but just wanted to say Thank you for doing a video on funky angled corners. BTW, all 4 angles on our door are different! 😂 I’d love to send you pics cuz we’re pretty proud of how it turned out. With your help, of course! Have a blessed and productive day….. ✌🏼

I've been really enjoying these videos. I have learned a lot from your videos over the years. I am a residential carpenter myself that does mostly framing and finish carpentry, but I have become the drywall finisher for our crew on small remodel work. If we build a whole house we hire an outfit to do drywall, but I do all the smaller stuff like 30 sheets or less. I have learned a lot about using hot mud from your videos, and that has been really helpful. I haven't gotten into using the tape on corner beads, I like using steel beads because I can staple them in place plum and square them. Then use mesh tape on both sides and coat it with durabond. Anyways thanks for the videos

I enjoy the detailed finishing work. It helps me improve on my drywall work watching a true professional describe and work his craft. I also don't mind the conversation and the learning aspects of RU-vid and your experiences within the platform. Over the past 7-8 years I've have learned a tremendous amount about building construction and finishing from both personal experience on the job working as a contractor myself and from watching RU-vidrs work their expertise on camera. To the content labels or tags or whatever aren't as appealing as what I stand to learn. Even the little details of a run of the mill job give me a leg up in my own skill level. I can sit back and watch another guy work and have the free space of mind to analyze and think about what I could do different or better. In all ways, this business of creating is in turn producing better products for me and providing me, the viewer with information that I would otherwise have to pay for or find a job within that particular trade and learn from an expert. I can learn countless skills online for free and apply it I'my life. So, Ben in my opinion your videos are the gold at the end of the rainbow and anything thing that cover's issues I might have or discusses materials and tools is of interest to me. I have been watching your videos for years and still click to watch your content when I see it just to see what's going on and what is new. I mean, even if you actually got into more carpentry I'd be clicking to see your perspective and skill level on that content. Keep on kicking, and if you decide to monetize it won't hurt my feelings! In fact I support monetization and the benefits it will likely provide for your family. That's why we work and grind is to make that green. Obviously, we have ethics and the Golden Rule but our perspective isn't really the perspective of others and it is easy to "undercharge" or sell ourselves short because of our own experiences! There is good value on this channel and you should be paid for it! Ok, I'll shut up. Much love. Thank you for the awesome videos!

Hanging corner bead is by far my favourite part of finishing. I completely agree how well a drywaller hangs his corner beads separates from other drywallers. Checking levels, evening out spaces and lining up nicely where beads meet up are the things us OCD minded finishers really notice. Even when I do long sections where 2 or more beads need to be used such as along ducting I pull out my laser so it doesn't look like I used a spegetti noodle to bead along it. Cheers from Vancouver island

Because of your content and teaching abilities, I was able to completely gut my 1948 garage and redo it with a 5/8" drywall. That not an easy task considering how out of plum some studs and saggy ceiling joists were, but I was confident enough to tackle that project and make it look great in the end. Doing the upstairs bedroom now and feeling like it's taking me half the time of the garage. Just wanted to thank you for the knowledge. Keep lighting those other candles like me!

Ben, if you ever get to read this please take heart in the fact that you are an awesome guy, a great teacher, a great sense of humour and have a relaxing manner. I have watched your videos for around 8-12 months now and you gave me the confidence to tape and joint my own self build garden room. Neither I’d attempted before. Obvs not taking the credit for the build but the finish plaster/mud work (yes I’m from over the pond where mud is something the dog rolls in) is amazing. Everyone says they can’t believe it’s not plastered. You were my inspiration and gave me the confidence thank you. Even though it’s finished I still watch your videos as I find them entertaining. Do what makes you happy. That’s what matters at the end of the day and if it means you don’t pick up your camera every day or spend hours editing, then don’t. It’s a long way from my day job working behind a computer.

I'm honestly shocked creators can make a living from RU-vid in 2019 and I say this because I was a partner making decent money around the early days, but I started my channel in 2008. I since then, Saw a rapid decrease in payout since they opened the partnership program to the majority of channels. But I also know content creation is extremely hard and repetitive. Theses days I honestly don't care for creating much, but I love watching people in the trades who work as they would, hoping I'll see and learn something new from their daily job as it's shown. Don't feel pressured to create for anyone else, and absolutely take breaks as needed. Huge respect to you and this channel

Hey Ben! Thank you so much for your honesty today. I really love how you express yourself. Dude your videos are awesome, no matter which way you have gone. I just love hanging out with you! But I have especially loved hanging out with you while you're working. You organically ran into issues and we got to see how you solved them in the moment. I have watched most of your videos, and I learned a lot just watching you in the last few videos while you rant. Plus I love your rants! But most of all I want to say thank you so much. You have highly contributed to my being able to learn mudding and starting my own drywall repair business!! I am so thankful to you for all of your expertise. You are invaluable to many of us! Even your 'silly' rolling mud onto the walls is fun to watch! There are many who aren't good at applying mud to the wall and I think that will actually help those ones. Hey Ben I started my own residential renovation company about 5 1/2 years ago, as a general contractor, but I do alot of the work myself. I owe the "growing" success of the drywall/mudding/painting components of my projects, mostly to what I have learned from following your channel and your advise. Although I still struggle with those darn pesky mud air bubbles ... lol. I guess I've been cruising along with you since when you started posting. I found your channel almost immediately after starting my company. I have enjoyed many of your videos. One that really stands out is when you visited your dad and you guys were making cedar shakes. That was pretty cool. I have to say that I owe you a debt of gratitude. I can not thank you enough for all the time, energy and resources you have invested into your channel. I will definitely remain subscribed to your channel and keep viewing your posts, in whatever form they are presented. Ben, turning your own home into a series of videos has worked well for Jeff Thorman on Home Renovision DIY. I think the difference between your channel is that he does everything. Cement work, electrical, framing, drywall, etc....
