This video is packed with great info. 👍🏼 I have been in construction my whole adult life and never knew that osb was actually oriented for strength. 😳 Now I just hope my work doesn't show up on one of your videos (again) 😂

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It is so refreshing to see a roofer on RU-vid that actually knows what the hell he is talking about.

Thats the correct way drip edge metal goes first than paper if not it can rotten the fascia

i like the idea of ice and water going on top of the drip but unforutnaly in my area code says ice and water must extend down the face board at least 3 inches

Gotta know how water flows... And when I step flash I nail the high side to the wall not the deck ..

The roof was done one month ago? 😱 Thank you for great videos. Could you next time while showing the correct way to do it, is to use a piece of shingle, or just to show a picture. I understood what is the wrong way, but couldnt understand the right way, on that long nailed sheet metal piece :) Thanks.

Thanks for all your info as I'm a Brit and have never come across these kind of roofs until 2017.. and don't ask me about water wells . Is it possible to use to use concrete/clay in New Jersey or would it be only shingle or slate and the latter being expensive and costly because of rarity and weight?

That 1\12 would be covered with all ice and water shield then roofing

How can you tell how many sheets of plywood you need to replace before you tear the shingles off?
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 года назад
You can plan for the worst case by taking your square footage and divided by 38. As far as to tell how many bad ones you have you can't tell exactly. You can get kind of an idea by walking it or having attic access maybe seeing.

Why is the valley backwards?
@ScottWConvid19
@ScottWConvid19 2 года назад
That valley backing paper should've been laid down first and the main roof backing paper laid over that, so if water gets past the shingles, it'll run onto the valley paper without going under any seams.

Wow , that roof sure is in pretty bad shape . Can’t believe they didn’t re-sheet that whole roof . Better check the ventilation in the attic . Stay safe up there !

I do my drip then paper
@ScottWConvid19
@ScottWConvid19 2 года назад
He did a video a few months ago that showed water damage on the edge of a roof that was caused by the paper being over the edge metal. The starter provides a seal against the edge metal, but the paper doesn't.

@@ScottWConvid19 I been roofing 20 yrs and paper has always been over the drip edge us pros put ice and water down stuck to the metal paper over the ice and water shield thanks for the info glad to know all roofers have all been doing it wrong 🤔 how do you know more then the manufacturer requirements

@@louisbrown2279 The thing I like about Brian's channel is that he is highly knowledgeable because he continues to learn and doesn't get stuck in the "I've been doing it this way for ____ years" mentality. And he does an excellent job at explaining the physics behind the process. Brian is educating a lot of veteran roofers and he's actually providing the means whereby the industry as a whole can benefit and that makes its way to the longevity of the roofs that are installed. I personally hope that his channel grows exponentially and his information, instructability and influence reaches far. Like I said, he uploaded a video a few months ago that showed how the way that SOME roofers do it, is not the best way. You're free to make your own decisions and your free to roof however you choose. The cool thing about liberty is that you have that choice. You can either watch the video and learn OR stay in your "I've been pounding nails for 20 years" mindset. If the manufacturer of a shingle requires one or the other, for their warranty to be valid, then you have to make the decision to either keep using that brand or not and whether you're going to continue to do it the way that you've always done it. 🤷‍♂️ I changed the way I do drip edge, as I have seen and understood (enough of) the physics of surface tension and how a bond to the edge metal can detour the water, to realize that his advice is good. I recommend looking into it. You might be glad you did

@@ScottWConvid19 yes if there is any kind of ice and water shield at all you are supposed to strip in your drip to make deck and drip covered but if only paper you should put it over your drip imagine a home owner calling saying why do I have water running out drop under my drip if water did bet in guess it just matters more of the situation normally most shingles I do are all on federally owned post offices and they have a qualified inspector over see the work being done I do alot of metal roofing too which gets the high heat blue skin under and drip all stripped in they also expect you do a cap nail every six inches some the manufacturer requirements seem dumb in theory

Okay -- best practice dictates ice and water go OVER either drip edge/gutter apron across eaves. Can we also definitively say that best practice dictates ice and water also goes OVER drip edge at rakes for the same reason? I think that the second one will generate lots of interesting and differing opinions. Let's go.
@justinh6974
@justinh6974 2 года назад
Because the water runs down, I like to put the drip edge over my ice and water on the rakes and at the eaves I like ice and water to go over the drip edge. It always works great for me.

Great breakdown, dang even the plywood orientation matters. It's the little details that matter, it can make the difference between a leak and not a leak. You had a great tutorial on H clips about a year ago as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qWzyukbY3_U.html
