For the exam, it does not matter, but you should wash the dentures first so that you can use the clean basin to hold the clean denture brush at the sink then use that same basin (without having to clean it because it only held a clean denture brush) for the patient to spit in before having to clean it. Good luck!

They are referring to the water at the bottom of the sink, which will have food particles and denture paste and is not suitable for rinsing. Rinsing should be done with the clean water streaming from the faucet. Just perform the skills as demonstrated in the video, they are demonstrated according to current Florida standards.

The faucet is always considered dirty and should NEVER be touched with clean hands, but it is ok to touch a dirty faucet with dirty hands (or dirty gloves). This does not violate any infection control principles. It is not necessary to use a paper towel every time you touch a faucet, only when your hands are clean. Good luck!

You can if you wish but it is not necessary. The test will not grade on this point. Good luck!

You may offer this to the patient, if you wish. It is not required for the exam. You must look for any abnormalities of the mouth and gums. Good luck!

The patient removed their dentures and is now holding the cup with those hands. It is better to take the cup to the sink and immediately wash your hands, so that the patient isn't holding the cup the whole time you are washing your hands and gathering your supplies, setting up, etc. For the test, either way will work, but it is always best to minimize contamination whenever possible. Good luck!

In Florida, you may be assigned to perform "Mouth care with teeth" (brushing teeth), OR "Mouth care with dentures" in which you must clean the dentures and the mouth. They are two separate skills, but denture care will also include mouth care. Pay attention to the care plan - does the patient have teeth or dentures? Teeth = mouth care, dentures = denture cleaning PLUS mouth care. Hope this helps! Good luck!

After turning the faucet off (with dirty gloves) and transporting the denture cup and basin, the gloves are removed and new ones applied before performing mouth care. The cup is dirty because the patient took out their dentures and handled the cup with dirty hands. The basin will be spit into by the patient during mouth care and THEN cleaned. This is the appropriate method of performing this skill. Thanks and good luck!

No, that is not required for the CNA exam in Florida (every state has their own specific requirements). The Florida exam understands that arm bands are not present in every setting and are often wrong (home care, assisted living and nursing homes do not routinely use armbands). This is not required for the exam, but you will not be penalized for checking the armband (although the "patient" for the test will not have one which often leads to confusion!). Thanks and good luck!

No. Denture care requires two sets of gloves because you want clean gloves on before performing mouth care (after cleaning the dentures). Assisting a patient with a bedpan also requires two sets of gloves (one to place the bedpan under the patient, then remove gloves to elevate the head of the bed, then a new pair after the patient indicates they are done to remove the bedpan). Hope this helps!

You will need to gather all supplies needed for each skill you do, so you need to be aware of the necessary supplies. Use common sense (if it is a washing skill - soap, water, washcloth and towels are necessary). Our skills book (available on 4yourcna dot org) has supplies and step by step written instructions for all skills and may be helpful. Flashcards can also help you learn which supplies are needed for which skill. Good luck!

I noticed that you didn't use a paper towel to turn on the faucet when you brought the basin over to clean @ 5:58 I was taught that you never touch the faucet without paper towel, should you use a paper towel every time to touch the faucet during exam?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 11 лет назад
At 2:14 the big blue box overlay clearly states to use a paper towel to turn the faucet on to prevent contamination of your hands. Please review the video.

Isn't her hand contaminated when she turned the water off without using a paper towel? Then handling the denture cup, and then touching the emesis basin and putting it back on the over-bed table?

Thank you for the videos. They are vey helpful. In our PN class, we were told to use two forms of identification ( verifying the patient's name verbally and also checking the patient's armband) before doing any procedure. Is this not required for the CNA exams?

Should we wet the mouth before cleaning the gums with a toothette? At my CNA prep course we were taught to always wet the patients mouth before cleaning the mouth and to check for mouth soars.

Your videos are always a help. On the florida state exam prometric says the dentures will ne stored on beside table will i have to still bring basin inside the bathroom , being that i only need to use it for the patient when spitting for mouth care with swab
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 8 лет назад
Yes, because you need a clean surface to place the denture brush on before and after use (while you are rinsing the dentures and cup). It isn't a good idea to lay the denture brush on the side if the sink - better to place it in the clean basin. Then the basin will be used for mouth care. Thank you for your kind comment and best of luck!

+Shabrina Smith Yes, the basin remains clean and will need to be cleaned only after the resident spits in it.

Can you see any problem with taking the denture cup (and dentures) to the sink later when you take the emesis basin (with toothbrush) and gloves to the sink? Do you take the denture cup earlier because it is considered dirty?
