The top sheet is used for privacy in most skills. However, for this skill, the patient is fully dressed, so the sheet is now a comfort item. If the patient is dressed, just ask what they prefer. If they are in a gown, the sheet should be re-applied for privacy and warmth. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Gloves are optional for this skill. Gloves should be worn if the patient has any skin openings (sores, rashes, cuts, etc) or if you will come into contact with body fluids. For the exam, your "patient" for this skill (the manikin) does not have any open areas on their skin and is not incontinent, so no gloves are necessary. You may wear them if you wish, but it is not required (and a waste of gloves). Good luck!

In Michigan side rails are not used. They are considered a restraint. The bed is to be raised to an appropriate height while doing skill. The bed is then lowered anytime resident is left alone. Call light is placed for resident use at all times. Injuries with rails have been found to be far greater than without. Tricky part is to remember to limit the up and down motion by having everything you need as it uses alot of time and is uncomfortable for resident. It is one of the tasks I am practicing

It is up to the resident if they want to stay covered or not. You can fan fold it if they dont want it covered

For the exam, you are instructed to put on socks, pants and a long sleeve button or snap front shirt. This is demonstrating the application of these clothing items on the exam.

This video is designed according to current Florida testing standards. The bed at the testing center may be a manual bed (they are still used in many home care and assisted living settings and winding the crank does NOT violate OHS standards) and students may have never seen a manual bed in use. Electric beds can be figured out easily by a student - push a button. Healthcare personnel must routinely lift body parts, this shows how to safely. NOTHING in this video violates OHS safety standards.

The testing center may not have siderails on the beds because they are illegal in many settings. Siderails can be used as a restraint (a way of keeping a patient confined against their will) so you need to learn how to perform this skill safely without the use of siderails. Scooting the patient toward you and turning them away from you so they are lying in the center of the bed on their side is the proper way to position a patient in a bed without siderails. Good luck!

You may raise the bed up to a comfortable height, but it is not required. If you do raise the bed to a comfortable height, you MUST lower it to the lowest position at the end of the skill or you may fail because an elevated bed is a safety risk. Raising the bed to a comfortable height is optional for the skill (not a graded point) because not every bed in healthcare is adjustable (think home care and assisted living - regular beds). Good luck.

You should place the call light on the stronger side, if possible. It really depends on your patient. Weak does not mean "unable to function". The patient just may have an injury to the upper arm or shoulder but still prefers the call light on their dominant side. Ask the patient which they prefer, if you are unsure.

The manual handling practices in this video breach many OHS safety guidelines e.g. bed height, wind up bed, lifting the clients leg (manually). The bed is very out of date for safe manual handling. Current best practice indicates that bed rails must never be used unless required as assessed to meet the clients safety needs - if they restrict movement then restraint protocols must be implemented.

What if the resident preferred to undress using strong arm first so they can support there own weak arm when removing clothing?

Do we not have to raise the bed up to comfortable height, so we dont strain our backs?

Do you need to replace the top sheet after doing this skill for the test? There are a few of them in which you use the bath blanket and remove the sheet then what? Or is that just not a factor?
