If your cluster Instrument lights are all out then its most likely the dimmer. I'll show you how to fix it quickly. Needed: Deoxit Electronics Cleaner www.amazon.com...
Thanks for the video. My lights were almost "dark-yellow" and I couldn't see almost anything from the cluster while driving in the dark. Now I repaired the potentiometer (thanks for the idea of anti-rust) and used two led-lights. Definitly an improvement for my car :)
My problem was corrosion in the rivet retaining one end of the wire resistor. I pushed a four face awl into the rivet and screwed it backwards and forwards to displace the corrosion Second problem was that the wire resistor was displaced from the groove. I pushed it back into place and secured the free end with muffler putty (needs to be a heat resistant adhesive)
Very easy to fix dimmer switch, take out instrument cluster, take out dimer switch, open it slowly, make sure you know where the springs go when you put it back together " easily done" then clean out the switch using water and baking soda, glue the big spring in its place so it does not move anymore, put everything back together, put the dimmer switch in its place and you have a working dimmer switch. the switch is mechanical, no electronic parts, do not worry you wont break it.
Thank you Meb. A very well made video. Could you help with my W124 /300D. No dashboard light comes on with the ignition switch. Though the engine cranks over and turning indicator, emerg lights etc all work. Fuses all are ok. Drove the car yesterday..something gone wrong overnight? Thanks in advance.
