#IFR training with with Dennis preparing for my proficiency check. Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight.com/flightchops
This episode covers IFR training with Dennis and Justin; we execute several approaches and go arounds using the automation of the new Garmin Avionics in the Van’s Aircraft RV-14.
At the time of this training, I was recently out of IFR currency; due for my IPC Instrument Proficiency Check, which is basically a check ride we have to do here every 2 years.
I knew I’d be flying the much more complex and capable avionics, so I arranged to fly the IPC in this airplane BUT needed to get training to do so.
At that point I had ~50 hours VFR flying and had a basic understanding of the autopilot, but had not been doing any advanced programming of the avionics yet.
Dennis' Disclaimer:
Flying IFR in actual IFR can be dangerous stuff.
There is no substitute for proper training in your own equipment.
The consequences are just too dire.
Find a good instructor, learn your equipment.
TAKE IT SERIUOUSLY.
Take it on with caution and respect.
Don’t jump into the deep water right away;
And get recurrent training once in a while.
Having been working closely with Dennis for over a decade, I am proud to be able to recommend his services to anyone that wants to take their flying to the next level.
Our relationship started when I was a rusty VFR pilot needing to get recurrent… that led to Dennis introducing me to tailwheel flying which changed everything about where I was headed as an aviator. Then came multi engine and IFR flying. It’s been awesome to have Dennis as a mentor all these years!

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

Two really awesome nuggets that I got from this video: 1) HDG mode initially in the missed and switch to NAV after you confirm the AP wants to go to the right place, AND 2) bug the MAP altitude as the next step after GS capture.

Justin did some of my first line training on the Q400 back in 2006. He’s got a great instructor demeanour and sense of humour. Glad to see he’s instilling some solid, Porter inspired IFR SOPs. They’ll keep you safe flying single pilot IFR. Don’t forget that it’s a relatively high risk activity for GA flying.

Great video as usual, fantastic to see you fully instrument rated on the RV-14! I think the advice there from Denis is definitiely good, I have recently had a long lay off due to surgery (and being weathered out in February) so I decided to go up with an instructor today on my first flight back in the air post surgery and whilst it turns out it wasn't really needed (the Jodel 112 is very simple) it was nice to have an experienced hand in the P2 seat if anything did happen.

It is always a good idea to get recurrent training - if only to confirm you haven’t developed some insidious bad habits.

Congratulations! It's something I doubt I'll ever experience, and keeps you at that next level. Justin: yet another RV grin! Can't wait till I'm debriefing my Phase 1 flights on CloudAhoy. Haven't caught you up on the additional squawks on the RV-8; loose oil return line fitting (!) and the spinner rubbing on the bottom cowl (!!). Both fixed, and skirt seals installed; talking with Dave about the third and hopefully most successful flight, possibly next week. Scooter has had some medical issues distracting him, but he promises to get me his video clips tonight or tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I know man. It is hard to think about that though. From my vantage point it was not an issue - but the glare really shows on the chesty cam (it will also help to get a sun shade in that airplane)

Interesting that both Dennis and your hair were dark at the start of the IFR process, but both are now gray. I'm sure it's a result of the elapsed time and not the IFR training/recurrency itself.

I watch this with the understanding that I'm starting at a 2 yr college to get IFR and Commercial and I think, how in the world am I going to learn all of this. I've been studying the ground school on my own but the actual flying part (that I see in videos) makes my head explode.

Does the sunlight on the screens cause an issue trying to see them when you are inputting IFR?
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
No - in this case it was the "Chesty" cam being lower than our eye line, combined with the lack of a sun shade and the finger prints. I intend to get a shade for this airplane, and clean the screens more often than never.

6:28 As a VFR pilot who has to hear some of these calls at an untowered airport, it's worth clarifying what that is because VRF pilots don't know what the RNAV approach calls for. "11 mile final" mostly covers it, but maybe add in "That'll be an 11 mile straight in approach for 05"
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
Yes, this is good feedback and I've implemented - it might be be how we call it out in one of these recent episodes.

@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
This is early training on a new to me system. How would you propose I approach this, if not to be very detailed and thorough while attempting to understand the nuances?
@Micg51
@Micg51 2 года назад
@@FlightChops I would get to know all features of automation first on a VFR flight, so you don't have to figure them out while ifr. Then slow down, I think this is the biggest issue. Brief what modes of automation you are going to use and how the approach will be set up on your avionics, then verify that it is setup the way you want it. One little tip I believe was mentioned was have the missed approach frequency ready as backup and bug the missed approach altitude next. If approach mode is active it will not go to the bugged altitude until you set it to ALT mode. A neat thing with foreflight as well is the annotation feature. I don't deal with cold weather correction much, but annotate the value you expect on the ground. If it changes you can update in the air. But to sum up, do everything you can ahead of time so all you have to do is twist the alt/hdg selectors, talk on the radio, and fly the plane.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
Right... but this is what we did; it was a VFR flight... We were simulating IFR and practicing to use the automation with in the IFR context. I'd already flown the airplane over 50 hours VFR and used the AP and basic flight planning features for cross country.

I still prefer chronological videos. Constantly switching between so many different 'timelines' makes it hard to follow. I just get used to one instructor / situation, and it changes, so I just skip ahead to the next scene with the same situation. So to end up watching the whole thing would take 3-4 passes, which obviously doesn't happen. Makes a 25 min video about a 5 minute cut as I keep the 'scene' constant.
