Part 4 - Scotland to Iceland Ocean Crossing Flight over the North Atlantic in a DA62.
The biggest General Aviation flight I’ve ever flown! Austria to Canada.
Proudly associated with ForeFlight: www.foreflight.com/flightchops
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Haraldur Diego, @VolcanoPilot.
www.aopa.org/news-and-media/a...
In this multi-part series, the largest #generalaviation project in FlightChops history, ride along with us as we team up with the Diamond Aircraft ferry crew and act as pilot flying on delivery of a new DA-62 light twin aircraft from Vienna, Austria to Diamond Aircraft’s Canadian base in London, Ontario Canada.
In this fourth episode of the series, we’re packed into survival suits in the DA62 and execute the #oceancrossing leg from Wick, Scotland to Reykjavik, Iceland, flying over the North Atlantic. Micke is following behind in the DA42. This flight was #IFR but we were above the main cloud layer for most of the journey. Arriving in Iceland we were hoping for a clear approach to fly by an active volcano prior to touching down in Reykjavik.
View part one of this series: • Atlantic Crossing Flig...
View part two of this series: • Six Countries, One Day...
View part three of this series: • North Sea Ocean Crossi...
ForeFlight was along for the entire journey providing all our charts and flight planning tools. Their international capabilities are a must have for any pilot, let alone those flying through six countries in one day.
During my DA62 familiarization flight at Diamond Aircraft’s base in London, Ontario prior to departing for Austria, I tested the Bose ProFlight in-ear headset; I already knew it was comfortable, but I wanted to see how the active noise canceling held up, and it was impressive - I am not surprised it is what Micke wears exclusively when flying Diamond Twins (which are admittedly quieter than most regular piston powered aircraft).
Micke’s related episode here:
• DA42-VI ATLANTIC CROSS...

FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

As a glider pilot who regularly flies for more then 5 hours the controlled dehydration sounds so dangerous. Usually we use the rule of thumb that if you aren't going to the bathroom once an hour you probably aren't drinking enough. And yes, high performance gliders are outfitted with a simple urination system, look it up.
@FlightChops
@FlightChops 2 года назад
Yes for sure; I should have maybe clarified that by "controlled dehydration", I meant that we were reducing, not eliminating fluid intake. The basic schedule is: no tea or coffee with in an hour of departure, have water or sports drink on hand to sip through out flight, and then have a solid ~500 mils with in an hour of landing...

Loved this, but you knew that. Had to laugh when I saw Micke's "slate clap"... I've had to do that when syncing separate audio from action cam video. Someday someone will develop a micro-mixer for ambient and transmitted audio (and separate remote power) for us single-cam buccaneers. You should be glad you made this trip when you did... joining the No-Pee Club when you're over 60 is a lot harder... or softer... whatever. Looking forward to hearing "Bluie-West-One" on the next one, giving me all those great Ernie Gann memories. Hoping you're anticipating the same level of relief getting this series completed as I am of getting my airworthiness certificate. Weight and balance is done; now crunching numbers in spreadsheets and Foreflight W&B... and shoveling snow from yesterday's storm before preparing for first engine start. Heard about the loss of Volcanopilot... Godspeed, Haraldur Diego.

Controller here: Usually we ask for a readback again because something was wrong with what we heard, but sometimes we were just laughing at the joke somebody in the room just told. Either way, there is no judgement in being asked for the readback again, just like we don't feel judged when a flight crew asks for the cleared level again because one of them heard something different.

I remember flying from North Dakota to England in the 80s in a B52 to do a flyover at an air show, then back without landing using aerial refueling. We flew over Iceland doing an excercise with some fighters on the way, and also taking us over Greenland, Greenland was very much covered in ice and snow, and Iceland had lots of greenery and was beautiful which we got a laugh out of 😆 seems a similar route was just used this week but very little was funny for those crews sadly.

Steve, thank you so much for all those images from different points of view and angles. At the end of the video, watching Micke landing, I had that thought: How tedious it is again and again to position yourself at the right place for a couple seconds of video that we "take for granted". Not forgetting the tremendous amount of video editing. Thank you so much for all the excellent work!

So glad you enjoyed it Richard, and I really appreciate you noticing "the work" - I try to make the story telling transparent and seamless; for the most part, people just soak it in without a thought to how it was achieved, so it is very rewarding when I get a comment like this - because yeah, it AIN'T EASY! :). But I enjoy doing it and thanks for watching / sharing / engaging with and supporting the content so I can keep doing it.

Haha - that’s awesome. I’m at Hartzell with the RV-14 for a couple days. I was excited to cram an IFR flight into a short leg to an uncontrolled field on a nice day that probably should have just been VFR 😬🤓 Check it out on Flightaware - I zigzagged because the initial plan was for RNAV 08, but I managed to get better wind data just as I was cleared for the approach, and decided to switch to RNAV 26 (so I wasn’t landing with a slight tail wind). The smarter move would have been to just go VFR and over fly the field to assess the wind sock and then fly a tight pattern and land 🤷‍♂️

Nice planes. Nice flying. 😎 Back-of-tne-envelope flight planning suggests my Musketeer could do this - easily with a modest ferry tank. As a west coaster I've also looked at flying across the Pacific. There are routes and procedures across the Bering Strait (Nome to Provideniya, PAOM-UHMD), but getting to Nome in the first place is no small feat and it's insanely far from Provideniya to anywhere else. Russia is a big country and the Russian far east makes Canada look densely populated...

I'm not sure where I saw notification of Mr. Diego's passing. Maybe it was "In The Hanger" with Christie. It's a sad loss when someone like that passes. Steve, I have another request for you. I mentioned in a previous video that you used Lumix cameras, and I just made a recommendation to a friend of mine for a Lumix to replace her older Nikon Point and Shoot. Would it be possible to go over your camera gear, why you chose it and what software and stuff you use to put together these great videos. If you ever get the opportunity, it's out of print, but you might look for Daniel V. Gallery's book called 'All Hands on Deck.' Gallery was the aircraft carrier Captain that worked out a plan to board and capture a Nazi U-Boat during WWII. However, before he was Captain of the U.S.S. Guadalcanal, he served as the Commanding Officer of a bunch of sub-hunting Catalinas flying out of Reykjavik. Fun story to read. He later goes on to detail the capture of the German U-505, which now sits on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Technology.

I just posted this answer to another related comment of yours, but I am copy/pasting it here too: Hey sorry for the delay replying - camera wise, I'm still shooting on a Lumix G85 that has to be pushing 5 years old now. It's still a great little camera and shoots 4k, but I am sure there are better options now, I just haven't been putting the energy into learning what is new - please let me know what you find out.
@GaryMCurran
@GaryMCurran 2 года назад
@@FlightChops Steve, it's okay. I apologize for the redundancy of my questions. As I said, I suggested that my friend buy a Lumix, since the Sony I wanted her to get was discontinued and unavailable. I knew you used them, and have always been pleased with your videography, so I figured it was pretty good. What I was unaware of was the Lumix actually had interchangeable lenses. I was under the impression that they only made Bridge-style cameras. Anyway, I'm really enjoying this video series. Thank you for taking us along on it.

Why getting vectors to an ILS with a final of 12.5 NM when the RNP is a straight in plus brings you down in a way that you can do a “normal” traffic pattern? This means less flight time and less fuel burn. And we landed in Reykjavik not in Keflavik 😉 Flying comes first, video last☝🏼

Lovely video. I'll chime in and say the reason the readback was queried was because the clearance was to maintain FL140 'from' DEVBI but initially you only read back 'at' DEVBI leaving some uncertainty as to what level you might fly after passing the point which the radio operator cannot accept. I know this because I was corrected on the same error the first time I flew oceanic.
@tehlarsie
@tehlarsie 2 года назад
@@MickeLang you did. There may however have been poor reception or it wasn't spoken clearly enough, leaving room for doubt. The radio operator needs to be certain of a good readback, he queried just the part concerning the flight level, from DEVBI maintain F140. VHF reception can be spotty from the Faroe islands remote site but it's also possible that the oxygen feed may have interfered with your transmission. Great video, thanks for sharing :)
