The Insurgentes documentary / road-movie Lasse Hoile made in 2008-9 about the recording of my first solo album has now been remastered and can be viewed here. It’s a snapshot of where I was at that time in my life - having recently turned 40, this period was about taking some new creative paths, and both my solo career and work remixing classic albums began around this time. We had a lot of fun doing the film but it was not the happiest time for me in my personal life (which definitely comes across), plus not everyone got what we thought was surreal and funny. So I think it created an impression of me as a rather dour and over-serious individual that for some people is - understandably perhaps - still their overriding impression of me! Still I'm proud of what we did, and I believe it remains quite unique in the pantheon of music documentaries.
Directed by Lasse Hoile
Produced by Lasse Hoile and Steven Wilson
Cinematography - Lasse Hoile
Editor - Lasse Hoile
Executive Producer - Andy Leff
Sound Mixing/Editor - Brian Dyrby
About Insurgentes:
Insurgentes is a documentary film about Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) directed by Lasse Hoile. Insurgentes is a musical road movie that follows the making of his solo record of the same name, and is a portrait of an increasingly rare artist who works with music and media out of love and not for fame and fortune, persisting in making art on his own terms in a world where 'throw away' mentality is increasingly becoming the norm.
The film features footage of Wilson with other artists and friends including Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth, Jonas Renkse from Katatonia, the Israeli superstar Aviv Geffen and the legendary producer Trevor Horn.

This album blew me away on first hearing. It was like the kind of music I would be making myself if I was in the same position. I later found out he lived literally a mile away from me and I'd be running past his house on occasion. My favourite artist and I never knew how close he actually was.

Watching this right after seeing SW interview on Rick Beato. Nice comparison of SW now and then back in 2008, he seems more relaxed and content now actually on that Rick Beato interview! Here he swears a bit more, a bit more uptight and that answer to the lady on the Tel Aviv beach: I PLAY WEIRD SHIT hahaha. Nice to see him grow not only as a musician and as a person. Isnt he married now too? Im gonna go listen to the new album when its out and not gonna complain or ask for PT to come back. I love every direction this guy takes as a musician, not just the heavy prog rock stuff. Oh and also, I write my own songs, first ever video I did for my song “Comet” was inspired by Stevens video for “Nowhere now”. You can find it on my channel. Thanks for the inspiration mr Steve Wilson and hope you keep making beautiful music that only YOU want to make.

Just absolutely massively enjoyed. The perspective of Steve's dislike of music being found solely on the internet but NOW in 2024, if it hadn't been for me listening, almost constantly to RU-vid, I would not have really found his music, in all of it's forms, along with so many others. I still buy albums and CDs because I like the collection of the artwork, like he says, it kind of goes hand in hand when you love music. Thank you for this documentary, Steven Wilson. I've been paying attention to your genius.

I kind of dislike the snobism against iPods and modern means of listening to music. I'm 47 years old now and also grew up before iPods and downloads. I listened to taped copies from vinyls on a children's cassette player! Talk about the sh*tty quality of mp3s and listening to music on your phone's speaker? It was very similar in the 70s/80s for me. Not everyone could afford the highest quality sound systems. I still enjoyed the music. And I still enjoy it today from my favourite streaming service even listening on my notebook speakers. And although I have the whole world's music at my fingertips now, I still carefully choose and select what albums I give my time to. Lastly I've been obsessed with the album "Say So" from Bent Knee and have been playing it again and again. On my iPod Touch. The difference is, if you bought an album back then, you were stuck with it without listening to it first. The consequence was that a lot of bands produced their hit singles and filled the rest of the albums with forgettable crap. You bought the albums for the hits and were left with an otherwise bad album. Today I listen to the good albums in full repeatedly and put the one-off hits I like in my playlist that I listen to when I just need familiar and pleasant music. Not all "things were best in the 80s".

Beautiful work. As an aside, I can think of one musician who was good at both sport and music. Daniel Johns from Silverchair. He planned on being a musician or a cricketer 🤪! I’m so glad he chose music. I’m also glad Steven was bad at sport so that we now have the delight of his music to listen to.

I wonder what is the perspective nowadays, with streaming and higher quality bands. I didn't get to experience the vinyl era, cause I was born in the 90's, but I do as a musician see the point of view of the artist and how to present the art. It's cool that at least as collectible there are still albums being sold.

Hahaha! At 1:12:00 the guy with Blue Tshirt and Blue jeans giving His back to the camera it's me. I remember that day, i only had enough money for a snack and for the metro because at the Time i was unemployed and i was forced to drop Out from school. When we came in Steve looked a little cranky and i asked if we could take a picture but one of the assistants said no in that moment because picture time was reserved for the listening party. People started doing It anyway and when It came my turn i took a couple trying to be sneaky but because i was so nervous to see Mr Wilson in person the whole thing backfired because i didn't set the Exposure properly and they ended up looking all blurry and with the highlights all blown Out. Hoo boy! What a cope Out that was! But at least i got my autographed copy. Anyway i also saw this documentary at a film festival, i still have my ticket somewhere and. That was an interesting day.
