partially correct analogy/coincidence! I have a quad core, 8 thread i7-3632qm, in an old Thinkpad Edge, as my backup laptop. if my main one dies I can hop on the spare. That quad core i7 mobile is still zippy enough for Windows 10. However it thermal throttles often under load. Just way too inefficient. In about 2 or 3 years I'll have to completely retire the system.

Even a cheap one can outpace a standard hard drive for awhile before write/cache throttling happens. but do be careful about reliability. cheap SSDs can get bad blocks quicker due to lower overall manufacturing quality.

@@oliverwilson999 true. However, even if it hasn't changed much, Intel has tried to make it that way. Just look at their processor naming schemes... I think the most important thing about this is that the different models are now aimed at different target markets than several years ago. i5 back then is like i3 today, i7 back then is like i5, i3 like pentium... that's my opinion on the matter

Yeah, my 5 or 6 year old Desktop has a quad core i5 and a GTX 1060, it is heavily outdated but works great for old stuff. My new desktop is way faster with a 12th Gen i5 and a 3060 ti, I use that for modern stuff.

There's no need for that. The Ryzen 3 Goes against the i3 The Ryzen 5 Goes against the i5 The Ryzen 7 goes against the i7 The i9 goes against the low end threadripper and Ryzen 9 And Eypc Goes against Xeon.

@@David001 Celerons, Pentiums, Athlon and Sempron and NOT worthless. You may want to consider them when you have extremely limited budget (especially buying very low end laptops) or use them on some special situations. Pentium and Athlon were also high quality chips during the 2000s. Sempron has been discontinued for a long time though.

I would have killed for a core 2 duo. My first CPU was an MOS 6502 running at a whopping 1.1 MHz.

Pentium 1 120mhz single core here although technically i had an Amiga 500 and a mega drive both came with a Motorola 68000 7 MHz! processor

agree. in fact my take on the matter is that AMD forced Intel to FINALLY change their processors and the target markets. notice how modern i3's can keep up/outpace older i5's, and even some original i7 cores... nuts. I remember when I used to own an i7 920. 3 core, maybe? but 6 logical processors. was alright for it's time. ran very hot. sold it a few years ago to purchase an 8th gen 8600k/Z370.

@@nup5 I7 4770 (non k) here used for gaming. Paired with 32 gigs of ***DDR3*** and a new RX 6700 XT, this thing is still a beast. Runs no hotter than 70c even with the stock cooler.

@@_Lassic_ eyy! yeah 4th gen chips are still holding their own. especially the i7 ones. I used to have a i5 4th, S variant. for a file server for awhile (4x 8gb ddr3 as well), ran as fast as my older i7 desktop. just be wary, the CPU may begin throttling that GPU. but I'm sure you know that, it's obvious you made that upgrade decision

@@nup5 the lack of REBAR support sucks. I can literally see my CPU throttling, eventhough it's not, because it's never at more than like 50% utilization lol. I also have a 3770 that I'm going to use as a server. In the future, I'd like to buy AM5 once AM6 comes out, just to make sure they hold their word on the whole socket thing.

Modern i5 CPU are absolutely good for high level gaming, if you don’t steam while playing you don’t need an i7

It's actually pretty stupid simple on Intel. If you look at a model number after the i number, the first 2 digits indicate the generation. Example, i7 12XXX or i5 13XXX. That 12 or 13 is the generation number. Edit: Forgot to mention, everything else after the generational number, is the specific model within that generation and type

It is simple, the the first part is the generation number, 4xxx is 4th Gen, & 13xxx is 13th Gen for example. next is the model, like 13900 is the current high end i9, then come the suffix letters. k means overclockable, f means no integrated graphics, kf is overclockable with no integrated graphics, h is for laptops, hk is overclockable for laptops.

2000 series = bare minimum (email, videos). 3000/4000 = good enough for basic users. 5000-7000 = don't bother, they didn't improve much but the price goes up fast. 8000-9000 = no longer cheap but slightly improved. 10,000 = finally better performance but not cheap at all. 11,000 = don't bother, almost the same as 10 series. 12,000 = very good but high price. 13,000 = great, but brand new so it's expensive. Celeron = pain and suffering.

Yes it is more important. Intel CPUs organization explained simply: Generations are a group of CPUs, which are better than the last generation overall, because the technology evolved. Then, this group of CPUs is divided in i3, i5, i7 and i9, which does not refer to the level of technology, but simply how powerful each unit of a same generation is. Also, inside each classification of i, there are differemt cpus. For example, i5-10400 and i5-10600. The number next to them means they're from the 10th generation, but they're different CPUs, the 10600 is more powerful. It often happens that an i7 is less potent than an i3 because of being many generations behind, and that makes users quite confused. There is no official line of progression in terms of performance of the CPUs.

1. That woodchuck would chuck a lot of wood if he could. 2. Cache size is mainly beneficial to gaming. There aren't many CPUs with large cache sizes so the recommendations about which to buy for work/gaming are usually obvious. 3. CPUs can be smart at multitasking or bad at it (aka Windows 11 when it was new). They have a bunch of cores so you don't need to worry about what goes where. 4 cores will handle normal workloads. Only multitaskers/streamers/professionals need more. And yes this has been tested before you cry wolf and say 6-8 is the bare minimum.

Gamers friend...first two gens of Ryzen couldent even beat Intels 4core cpus fps-wize and was very memory sensitive. Ryzen 3000-series was competetive though.

@@ImDembe That is not what´s meant by this statement (i guess). It´s not that Ryzen 1000 was kicking Intels ass or something, it´s just that AMD 'normalized' having more than 4 cores in your system, which enabled developers to optimize for multithreading more than before.

@@karl9046 Yet here we are almost 6 years later and more cores dosn't do much unless you play a few specific games or do professional work. AMDs 5800x3d release is proof of that.

How many PCIe lanes did the 10th gen i9 had? 16... and that was 3 years ago. If you wanted to use NVME... you would sacrifice your Graphics card lanes. I personally have Intel myself because it was cheaper when I built my pc, but I'm pretty disappointed with Intel. I mean they've been using 14Nm for years and only recently switched to 10 nm and decided to name it "intel 7" , sorry but that's pathetic.

I'm sure the information is out there. You can just go look for that information instead of begging some ytbr to do a video on it.

The newest i3's absolutely destroy the 6700k, and basically match the 8700k/10400 in multithreaded workloads whilst trading blows with the 9900k in games.

People will group Core i9s in with Celerons

Lots of people don't care, don't research, and don't know. They just buy a system from a builder and play their games. I noticed even on gaming podcasts they will discuss and drool over a 3090 or 4090, but never mention a CPU they're running with it.

I also noticed it was fairly hard to find laptops with Ryzen when I bought my last one. Almost like Intel is offering deep discounts over retail pricing to maintain market share at the OEM level.

me with my 8600k. 6 cores, got a really good sample. paired with a slightly dated Z370 ASRock, but I was able to maintain 5.0GHz steady for almost an hour without fault. Think I got 5.5 max before CPU errors, been awhile so forget. Yes, water cooled. Does an AIO count lol? Budget minded system.

@@nup5 i got Corsair H100i plat AIO for it, and it runs stable at 70c

@@santenz8460 sweet! AIO is good for just below maximum CPUs, imo. not as good at heat removal after awhile, compared to a full water cooling system, but great for short bursts that budget overclockers usually need. usually.

Hm. Interesting point, but I'm not positive. Intel has been making 16+ core processors since 22nm... Idk gen 3 or 4? Though they were server and commercial CPUs, they could have leaked over, and probably would have.

they do change socket pretty often compared to AMD. that upgrade will be nice for you if you ever need it :)

i3 now days have 4 cores 8 threads which is solid. Sorta like a updated i5 6700k just a little boosted and that cpu can hold its own
