For video editing and rendering this test shows that we can save a lot of time with the 12900k, even while gaming we can extrac really nice fps gains in some titles! I have an i7-9700K and RX 6900 XT, but planing to get more performance from my graphic card with a faster CPU. Thanks man!
Great video, well done, subbed. The 9900k has stood up SO well, IMO it's been one of the best bang/$ CPUs Intel has made in the last 10 years in terms of gaming performance. I have a 5950x system, a 12900k DDr5 system, and a 9900k system still, all running various 3090RTX graphics cards. I mainly play flight sims like DCS and IL2, and the 9900k system still runs those SO close to the 12900k system I have, even using the HP G2 VR unit. Unreal.
It's funny how everybody was shitting on the 9900k when it released and now it's one of the best bang for the buck CPU's like you said. I remember when the 9900k released and I got called an idiot multiple times by people for buying one. Man have times changed
@@Darkhalo314 Agreed 100%, I had the same experience, everyone said I was being foolish when I built a couple 9900k systems. I kept the fastest one, it's o/c to a pretty standard 5.0 speed, and with my eVGA 3090 in it, it's literally at worst 10% slower in FPS than my 12900k, and in some games it's equal and even slightly faster. Unreal chip/platform.
It's weird because I'm running my 9900 k at 5.1 with my 3080 ti and still feel the lows sometimes in certain games like cyberpunk. Am I missing out really? I really want to stick with Intel as I've never owned and anything but I really want more than 8 big cores. So I was thinking maybe 5950x or wait till zen 4 . Don't want to wait forever. Or just be happy with what I got? What do you think?
9900k is still a beast gaming wise. I got mine for under $400 in 2020 and it's easily one of the best purchases I've ever made for a hardware component. MIcro Center has insane deals on CPU's.
I bought a 9900k which is pcie 3 , is it ok to buy a 4060ti or 4070 which is pcie 4 ? Or do I have to get 11th/12th/13th intel cpu ? I’m asking if the pcie 3 would limit the 40 series pcie4 gpu
The 9900K was limiting my 3090 so I’d say it will be even worse with a 4000 series card. It’s always a good idea to use the latest gen CPU and GPU together for best performance.
Same here! I have a 9900KS and it still OC’s all 8 cores at 5.3 GHz, so I’ll be sticking with that and just upgrading my GPU based on these gaming benchmarks (where I imagine the KS will be even closer in comparison with the 12900k). Much appreciated!
I already knew that the 12th generation i5 would already beat my i9 9900kf, when I put the values in the calculator it was surreal, I'm going to change my DDR4@3200mhz to DDR4 4400mhz to give the CPU a survival, I use a TUF RTX 3080 OC and game at 2560X1440 165hz. Excellent video man.
Current setup STILL using a I9-9900k, Aorus master 3080, 32gb ddr5, and in nearly every game@t1440p I have no issues. Couldn’t be happier. Will wait another 6-8 months and see how the cpu landscape looks then.
9900K is still quite competent; an individual so equipped should easily consider waiting to see what AM5 brings to the table, as I doubt the 9900K is 'stuttering' in anything....
LOL you are so full of it. I have both an 8700k, a 9900k, and a 13900k. FPS is higher with the 13900k, but normal desktop usage is identical between them all, and gaming just gets more fps doesn't feel any "smoother"@@Gamevet
@@drunkhusband6257 I'm not full of it. The .1 and 1% lows are better on the 12900k. I have a 10900K out there in the living room, connected to a 120 Hz 4K OLED. That PC has a RTX 3090, while the 12900K has an RTX 3080 Ti. The lows are much better on the 12900K. Play Wreckfest on the 9900K and then play in on the 13900K. Wreckfest has brutal fps dives on the 9900K.
What memory and which NVMe drives are you using, in either build? It's a pretty random benchmark, when you're not factoring in the full build. Like here's a car, photo from front and back.
Nice video. It's good to see my 9900k still so viable years later. Right now it's paired with a 2070 but I literally just got a 3090 to slap in it as soon as I get a few more parts to combine together something for my son with the 2070. single dad life lol. Just waiting on the new power supply really. I can run it now but I like to overclock the crap out of things and the 9900k is at 5.1ghz all core at 1.35v and pulls ungodly amounts of power. Plus I know how much an overclocked 3090 can draw all by itself! Freaking monsters... Lol
The side by side timelapse was fantastic. Seeing numbers and gameplay are one thing but seeing these chips pushed to the limits like that in a visual manner was fantastic!
Subscribed. Thank you for the video. I’ve been trying to decide if I should upgrade my 9600k to the 9900k or bite the bullet and get a new MOBO with the 12900k to go with my 2080ti. Having a recent video showing performance differences has really helped. For the price difference I’d be silly to not try to get a 12900k
when testing CPUs esports games should always be in the mix because the people who play those would benefit most from a cpu upgrade and it illustrates the differences more drastically
@@rekcinol the big channels always forget that. Some people want to build a very high fps esports rig! I have a 390hz monitor 500hz monitors are on the horizon.
Which Motherboard are you using with the 12900K and are you using GEN 4 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2? I'm just curious to know because my new 12900k setup vs my 9900K when comparing FPS is quite Big. Grate Vid
I’m using the ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F Gaming WiFi and the Samsung 980 PRO 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4. There have been a lot of driver and firmware updates since I tested so I’m sure things have changed. What games are you seeing the biggest FPS gains in?
The New World comparison was pretty nuts, basically doubled the 9900k when completely CPU bounded, unfortunately the other game tests were a complete waste of time (Run CPU gaming tests at 720p low settings only) but thank god for the new world test, getting probably the raptor lake 13900k or Zen 4 which ever comes first because the new GPU's coming later this year, RDNA 3 and RTX 4000, series are going to need it lol.
Am I just blind cause the side by side for new world looked completely different. Look at 6:14 and pause. Scaling is way off like one is zoomed in or running a completely different resolution... otherwise the rest seem fine...?
My overclocked 9900k is still going strong with 3080 Ti in 1440p @ 240 Hz it's just perfect, I don't intend to change it any time soon, especially with the prices of the new motherboards and DDR5 it would feel like a complete waste ! Also I got 13400 points in cinebench with mine !
I may have missed this, but did you run both at stock settings? I've got my 9900k overclocked to 5.0Ghz with the RAM set to the XMP profile of 3200Mhz and am wondering if my results would be similar to your 9900k results. I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade.
Great video do you know if i spec the same results if you compared i9 9900k vs i7 12700k? I hope can help me to my doubt because I go to buy i7 12700k so I need to know if it worth it for rtx 3070 TI thanks so much
@@rekcinol yeah I asking because I saw than I9 12700k has the same performance in games as i9 12900k the diference its the price and like 3 fps of difference also i9 its more expensive :(
@@rekcinol Oh I see then you think its good CPU i7 for gaming and streaming? With a Rtx 3070 TI because I played in 1440p but when I usually used DLSS with i9 9900k I have bottleneck
This video was really helpful. I was deciding if its worth it to upgrade from 9900kf to something like 12600k just because games and its really not worth it. But I will buy really good MB z390 from second hand, I have currently z370 and cannot overclock properly to have good temps with my custom water loop.
please don't and save your money for better new gen. I got 9900k, z390 and I'm facing high temp issue specially when I overclock the temp will go crazy high
thanks for this vid. just a little advice for your next reviews : in new world you tested 12900k by day and 9900k by night, it changes everything as there is lot more soft shadows by night, impacting the gpu perfs. rest is great !
For most current games yes. New World and other new releases will see a bigger jump. Also, the increase for rendering and content creation is huge but that doesn’t matter as much if your just gaming.
@@rekcinol yeap at least you live from rendering i can understand it. Thanks for the response. I have the 9900k and have no intention of upgrading to 12900k.
@@nerocod just sold my i9 9900k and aorus ultra z390 for 350 euros and ordered the gigabyte z690 UD DDR4 with the 12700k for 644 euro. I play a lot bf2042 on 4k with an 3080ti which is terrible optimized and runs better on alderlake cpu so i think its good deal, the money i could also spend on a new ssd but i choosed the cheapest way to get an alderlake cpu with a decent budget mob.
@@nubjealvin ddr5 sticks too? Sorry but i cant see the sense of paying 650€ for 8 fps +- gain in 4k having already a 3080 ti. I guess there are people who have money to spare. And I don't blame you, everyone does what they want with their money even if I don't see the point. And install win11 and all the stuff.
Have you done any reruns of these now that the platform has somewhat matured abit? I'm still on the fence on whether to upgrade my 9900k to a 12700k. The 12900k just seems abit of a waste of money for gaming and some light editing.
Might be sold on the 12900. I'm building a new PC for Starfield, ES6, AC Red, AC Hexe, and even the next Resident Evil games. Been using a i5 since 2016.
Did you notice an increase in performance on Windows 11 compared to Windows 10 that was also used in this video? I have purchased a 12700k, 64gb DDR5, and Z690 board and have heard issues with these chipsets and windows 11 TIA
I didn’t really see much difference between Windows 10 and 11. The most noticeable improvement in performance I had was in Premier Pro for video editing and rendering.
Good question, I'm not seeing a huge difference currently but I think DDR5 will continue to see better performance as games and applications are updated.
Would be nice if we had a live frametimegraph.Numbers look close enough for most gaming benchmarks but I bet the 12900k is smoother in certain cpu heavy scenarios and a frametime graph would have shown that.
Hello! So I have a Intel i9 9900K and just purchased an RTX 3090 TI but now I am worried the two are not going to work well with each other. Do you think I will need to upgrade to the 12900K?
No specific reason and I have nothing against AMD. I did look at Threadripper but decided to stay with Intel. If I were only using this PC for gaming then I would definitely consider a Ryzen chip.
I got a 4090 a few weeks ago. Haven't installed it yet since I'm out of town but my PC has an i9 9900k with a 2080 instead. Hopefully it can provide me with a big upgrade at 1440p at least for a year. The 13th gen seems to be bottlenecking the 4090 still so I might just wait out and upgrade a year from now
Good video sir! After 1080p most games will become GPU bound primarily, the contrast between CPUs will show the most at 1080p or lower resolutions. Seems to be twice as quick for productivity loads- sheesh!
Good point and thanks for calling it out! New World seems to really like the new CPU and shows significant improvement especially in town around a lot of players.
It is for me due to the increased performance for encoding, but if it's just for gaming, maybe not so much unless you are getting a 4090, then I would go with the new 13900K.
@@rekcinol thanks for the reply, yeah it is for gaming, I currently have the i9900k and a rtx3080ti but my mobo is a z390 so I've been thi King of upgrading it along with the cpu but it is pricey 🤣
Even though the average framerate didn't increase in every game it was within margin of error and rdr2 shows that there is still a benefit in the minimum framerate witch was 57fps more than the 9900k and that makes more of a difference to the playability of the game than the average framerate does if the average is high enough.
There are plenty other videos that compare overclocking and that’s why I wanted to show base performance differences because there is less of that content. Thanks for watching.
@@rekcinol i have corsair dominator rgb 32gb that I bought 3y ago for $450... So I dno if I should upgrade to ddr5 or not. The 1300 series is about $150 more then the 1200 series also. So dno what do to actually, if I wanna spend more for an upgrade and future proofing or dont
Can u do a vid on how to link multiple corsair commanders together. I have a 1000d case with 11 fans and 2 commanders linked to the hub and I can't get the fans to sync together as one like I know it should with a daisy chain setup
@@rekcinol no worries and 13 fans 3 radiators lol just wanted to be able to get everything in sync together and no one has vids on how to do it correctly
That’s my guess since it’s the same GPU being used. New World seemed to get the most benefit so it must have been CPU bound more than the others. I wasn’t expecting much gain from gaming and I’m happy with the increased performance for video rendering.
not much faster than my 9900k in games. so for me to get 20 fps in a game I would need to pay £700 for 12900k and ££600 for a good z690 m/board and £300 just to cool a 12900k lol. and £2000 for ddr5 are you for real man
You are correct, for gaming alone it's not a big increase for most current games. With New World, I am seeing 30-50 more fps especially in towns where there are a lot of other players. Having the huge leap in performance for video editing and rendering is worth it to me. Also, if you are streaming and gaming from the same PC this will crush the 9900K.
I got same situation right now , I thinking to change my 9900k for 12900k but also when I started calculating 12900k+ddr5 5200+z690+ new case it will be around 2000e . I will stay with 9900k till raptor lake when price of ddr5 should go down.

Something is wrong here, there was a game that ran at 56 fps on 9900k and 98 fps on 12900k, it shouldnt be that big of a difference on gaming, what was the clock speed of each CPU?
Both CPUs are at stock speeds, no overclocking. If your talking about New World, it’s gets a bug bump in towns when around a lot of other players with the 12900K.
@@rekcinol Jesus christ don't do it. Clocks will fluctuate all over the place. Performance will be worse. It's really not difficult to punch in manual voltage and all core overclock, maybe loadline calibration but thats optional. Flat out fixed frequency and voltage will always be most responsive anyway.
I have a 9900k/3080 and the moment I upgraded to my new 1440p 165hz monitor (from 1080p 144hz) I noticed the frametime is a bit more erratic then it was on 1080p 144hz.I'm starting to wonder if 1440p 165hz might be a little too much for a 9900k.Supposedly you get much better lows with a 12900k over a 9900k+ 30 mb cache which is basically double what a 9900k has which also helps greatly in gaming.
@@WiseOldDudee That's what I am seeing. Even in the games where the increase in max FPS isn't much the average and low FPS are higher. Watch Dog Legion was an example of that.
@@WiseOldDudee Yes, the 9900k is likely capping your frames. My 9900k prevents my 3090 from hitting 120 FPS in a lot of games at 4k. The GPU has the power to hit the target, which is shown by the GPU usage below 90%. Lowering the settings doesn't remove the CPU bottleneck. Glad you mentioned cache. CPU cache is critical for gaming. That's why you always want the top of the line Intel CPU. People who say that a 12700k is "almost as good" as a 12900k are dead wrong. A problem with upgrading now is the DDR5 shortage/scalping.
Games Really Bad Optimitation Hybrid Cores. DRM has problem with that, I Think Games are really old or Bad Optimitation. But The i9 12th So Much Superior at i9 9900K in productivity
It’s a beast for sure and the newer games will make better use of it. At least the older games didn’t perform worse and are about the same. New World seems to be much better with the 12900K!
@@rekcinol Whats the point of the test? You're trying to show if 9900k can hold while you dont push it to its capabilities which is 5.5GHz or at least 5GHz all cores. Otherwise you could just made a 5 second video saying yeah new generation is better.
My goal was to show the performance gain from one to the other without any overclocking. There are plenty of other people doing overclocking videos. If you don’t like the video that’s fine, it’s not for everyone.
@@rekcinol Its not about me liking it or not, it just makes no sense. Why would anyone buy a K series CPU if you dont overclock it as thats what its for to get the maximum performance. If you buy a ferrari and drive it 30% less of its maximum speed the test serves no value. If you would of overclocked the CPU it would hold much better value vs 12900K. May not give you the speed but also will cost 50%~+ less for 20% lower performance.
I’m not disagreeing that overclocking doesn’t have value but that wasn’t the goal of my video. I was demonstrating the difference at stock speed for easy comparison because overclocking has many variables based on the specific CPU and even mobo. Also, if I did overclock it would have been both of them not just the 9900K.
