As a Londoner can I apologise for John, a fellower Londoner. I took him at first for a reasonable and intelligent man. It was fascinating how that gradually unravelled under questioning. Fortunately we're not all like that.

As someone from the UK I'm stunned how often you find people from the UK that believes in Intelligent Design, I have moved around the UK and the wider world and I hadn't ran into anyone who believed in Intelligent Design before moving to the US

This is a great example of circular reasoning. Dude just went from one topic to another. It's a great example of moving the goalposts as well. People seem to accept Christianity because it seems like there are a million different reasons why it's true, but really when you start working at it what you have is a million different bad reasons and excuses propping each other. This conservation could have gone on for 10 hours and the guy would have just gone onto the next excuse, and the next one, and the next one, ad infinitum.

Theists are alway like this - they present their best evidence, and then as that one goes down in flames they magically come up with an alternative that is supposedly even better. Rather than admit a problem with their ideas they just go on to the next one. It is just throwing mud at the wall and hoping that some will stick.

Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be British. Hearing John is one such occasion.

Incredible how different this is from what the call in shows have become more recently. These days, callers would be told to shut up, put on hold, sworn at, insulted. Some of that is kind of needed to stop them preaching, testifying and dodging the questions asked but this gets to the same conclusion without descending into shouting. "John" is shown to be mistaken without shouting. I wish the shows could be more like those now.

As a fellow Brit, I struggle to see how John and I have been through much of the same education system.

"Creation by chance" or "intelligent design" are NOT the only two options! Maybe these are the only two options the human mind has the ability to know of & consider, there could an array of other possibilities that the human brain has no concept of their existence. Just like physics as we know it may be different after going into a black hole, or beyond the cosmos.

Intelligent design believers use the eye as a proof of intelligent design due to its perfectness in complexity and performance. If it is so perfect, why has an eagle with roughly the same eye size a better performance in resolution than the human eye and why has a cat or dog better night vision than humans. Why does the design criteria differ? If the designer (God?) is able to come up with a marvelous design for eagles and dogs, why was the best from both not implemented in the human eye? So God thinks apparently that animals deserve better designed eyes than the Christians who pray to him every day.

How to foretell the future 1. Guess. 2. Magically know the future. 3. Truck you into thinking I know the future. 4. Know enough about the domain I’m foretelling (economics, politics, sports, etc.) that I can make an intelligent prediction based on domain experience and pattern recognition.

Also when talking about the prediction of the future, Matt missed out a step - once you have granted that a supernatural entity was the best explanation, then there is ANOTHER step that is needed, which is that this supernatural entity is a god, and EVEN THEN, the assumption is that this god must be the god that created the universe, and THEN to assume that this god that created the universe is the SAME god as discussed in the bible.

Phenomenon following the dictates of physics are not random. Their observation matches calculation using expectation values in Q.M.

As I've said many times before, the biggest argument AGAINST intelligent design is that we don't have four arms.

"Everything has a cause" cannot be extrapolated to any scale. For example, particle decay - as far as we understand - doesn't have a cause. We certainly can't be sure the universe needs a cause. Even if god didn't need a cause, then the universe doesn't either. I wish that assumption would not be accepted without evidence or logical support.

To me, this line "of everything happening by chance" is just nonsensical. Then, of course, adding it was either chance or god(which is what they mean by ID, they might as well say it) is even more silly. From what I understand, life is inevitable. Given enough time and the right environment, life will find a way. Besides that, we know it happened. From the millions of species that are already instinct to the millions alive today... the odds are about 100%. Besides that, we have testable, repeatable, and observable evidence on how life evolved. There is no good or sufficient evidence for intelligent design. ID isn't science and proponents simply just try to poke holes in evolution.

If everything needs design, then who or what designed God? Or is god not part of "everything?" Intelligent designers would claim that God is NOT part of everything, but however they want to dance around it, if they can conceive of something with no beginning, then why can' t they accept a universe with no design and no beginning? I am totally fine with accepting the Universe as God, if there must be such a thing, but a God with no apparent connection to us or concern for us at all.

He hasn't looked at the origin of the so called fulfilled prophecies and the scriptures that were twisted, for example WWI being the start of Jesus's rule i.e.1914. That generation has all passed on so the fulfillment was plain wrong. The overlapping generations is just nutty.

The probability of life coming about by intelligent design is zero if there is no intelligent designer, so showing that such a thing exists would be a good place to start. Inferring that there is an intelligent designer by showing that life could not come about without one is one way to go, but I've never heard a good argument or seen any good evidence for that. It always seems to boil down to "seems unlikely, therefore god". If you're going to go with an argument that involves passenger aeroplanes and junkyards or the like then you automatically disqualify yourself from the conversation, because no one thinks that life began as a single step from elementary building blocks to organisms.

If religious claims are measured against scientific realities, and fail, isn't it fair to say that religious claims do not stand up to their standard of infallibility?

Most of the time when we hear someone with an English accent we tend to think they are smart, this isn't one of those times.

Matt, I think you're entirely right about refusing to characterize "not by intelligent design" as being necessarily "by chance". But "by intelligent design" and "not by intelligent design" are not the only two options, and that dichotomy should be equally rejected as unnecessary. The universe does exist (let's bypass questions of origin), and life did arise. That much I would take as fact. The truth about the "how" part is also fact, and it is entirely right that beliefs do not alter the "how" fact: it is independent of our beliefs. What we would like to do is know "how", and like so many things in life, the subject is too big for mere humans to encompass. We might be able to get some handles on it, but the entirety is out of our grasp. That makes it a wondrous thing, yet another fascinating and joyful thing to look at, look into, and be glad of. The intelligent design dichotomy, however, is a dead end road. I would never characterize "how" in terms of it. Why? Because it can mean whatever you want. And what do people actually mean by that phrase? I can't tell, because there is no agreed meaning. Some people seem to want to mean "creation" without bringing the existence of God into the question. I call that futile. My own belief is that "God created". I can't say it any other way. Some other people have huge hangups about "evolution", and want "intelligent design" to stand in opposition to that. I call that kind of language dishonest. Hiding from the real issue is an attempt at sneakiness (at the least), or at deception (at the worst). Why not oppose evolution outright, then, if that's one's issue? (Of course, there's a huge side-trail, also dead end, on "what do you mean by "evolution"? Not a particularly easy thing to pin down!) But the real science behind the idea is what science is: a best current understanding of what collected scientific evidence implies. Science gets some handles on what we see, but the entirety remains forever out of our grasp. And that's fascinating and joyful and wondrous. What I can't see is why "God created" and any science must necessarily be in contradiction. That's the false dichotomy. Might they be in conflict? In part, sure. None of us draws the perfect conclusions from evidence all of the time. Scientists are not different in that, but the scientific method does contain cautions and processes to avoid making clear mistakes, so we have a leg up, if we are diligent to pursue it. Perhaps the biggest thing I take issue with is the notion that "either/or" is the best way, or even the right way, to approach questions. Binary logic does indeed have its place, most certainly in mathematics, but science questions are seldom so clear cut. Even less so are life questions. Even less than that are God questions. Science, God, evolution, creation: the best we can ever hope for in this life is to make our best current understanding even better, richer, wider, fuller. That is the joy and fascination, and the living experience. God save me from misapplications of binary logic!

Near every if not all biblical prophecies are written AFTER the fact. Which makes it a whole lot easier and ones not written AFTER are so generic that near anything would of fulfilled them
