Intellivision Beauty and the Beast from Imagic | It's TOTALLY NOT Donkey Kong!

What do you get when you combine equal parts Donkey Kong, Popeye, and Crazy Climber into a single Intellivision cartridge? You get the first non-2600 game we've covered in this Friday Plays series, Beauty and the Beast!
With the announcement last week that Atari acquired the Intellivision brand and game library, my interest in learning more about this competitor to the VCS has spiked. So far I've only scratched the surface of the library, but what I've already learned is that even though I didn't play these games as a youngster, I'm having the same kind of simple fun as I'm accustomed to with my 2600.
Today I've chosen the Imagic game, Beauty and the Beast. Now, a couple caveats: being published by Imagic, this is almost certainly not part of the Atari acquisition, and prior to this week I'd never played the game before. But from screen shots I got a distinct Donkey Kong vibe, and it's a simple one-button game that doesn't require me to get too involved in that Intellivision keypad on my first outing with the system.
So, let's get to Beauty and the Beast!

AD&D is a must play; it is one of the crowning achievements on the platform. There is a lot of depth to the game in planning your route through the landscape to get to cloudy mountain and learning how to identify and attack things in the dark. One of most amazing plays when I was a kid was my dad getting the second half of the crown on Hero level with no arrows left and screaming like a crazy person with the winged dragon chasing him through the dungeon.

As someone who still has their original consoles, that still work, I love this. I have this game. I have a Fairchild channel F, Atari 2600, Intellivision w/voice module, Colecovision, Turbo Grafix 16, Sega Genesis, NES, Super NES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Switch, Atari Jaguar. Extensive libraries for all. So no matter what you throw down in here, I'm here for it! All of these were bought new when released, as were the games. Let's not start with the computer side of things. Loved the video, fellow Gen X'er.
@CarnorJast1138
@CarnorJast1138 Месяц назад
My very first game console was the Fairchild Channel F! I then got the Mattel Intellivision in 1979, just as it was being released to the general public! My next console was the Sega Genesis, though it was short lived with me. The next console, and my last ever console, was the Nintendo 64. Of all the consoles I owned, I miss the Intellivision the most! Ironically, I now own an original Atari 2600 with a few games, and it's a blast, though nothing compared to my PC. I am mostly a PC gamer, but I still want to get an original Intellivision and most especially Microsurgeon, AD&D Treasure of Tarmin, and TRON-Deadly Discs! At the time when my Intellivision was really my only system, I had about 35 games for it......but the three I listed above were my favorites! I've been using a PC of some kind since my Tandy CoCo 1 days, and in 1989, I went full blown PC, built it, and really never had a console that did as good a job as the PC's I had over the subsequent years!

@@CarnorJast1138My first console was Magnavox Odyssey 2, followed by Intellivision. Me and my siblings played those for years before we ever got an NES in 1989, and Genesis in 1991. I still have all these systems in working order, and play them still today. Even added to my retro collection over the years PC Engine Duo-R, Sega Master System, SNES, and recently, Evercade VS, which is a hell of a lot of fun.

I recall this game being quite popular on that system back then. The Intellivision was a great console, but damn the controller HURT!!! And the controllers were permanently attached so unlike with an ATARI 2600, you couldn't' buy a third party controller. Seriously, this game looked great, and could probably play better if the Intellivision had better controllers. I don't know what they were thinking of when they designed those side buttons. They're just rubber and not actual spring loaded buttons. And the rubber is so stiff that it has NO GIVE AT ALL and you have to grip the thing like you're using one of those strength grip things just to make the button register. And almost all the games used those buttons. I remember playing the games as a kid and ending up with REALLY sore thumbs and sprained hands from using those side buttons all the time. The Atari, with it's button on the top that had give was so much better. They cheaped out on those side buttons on the Intelivision.
@GenXGrownUp

Oh, I never thought about that. They were hardwired? I didn't realize. I seem to remember them having that coily phone-type wire, but I thought, like CV, they were removable. Huh.
@kmabru
@kmabru Месяц назад
@@GenXGrownUp The original console was hardwired. If you got the Sears Super Video Arcade version, they were plug in. Sears even had replacement controllers available. The Intellivision II console had plug in controllers. The plug was a right angle (down) if I recall. That one you could also get replacements for. If you thought the original Intellivision controllers were a pain, you probably wouldn't have liked the ones on the "II" console. I found the numbers and side buttons even harder to work with.

The Intellivision is an amazing console. I discovered it as an adult and love it. Atari is king of the arcade/action games, but Intellivision has a lot of more complex, 'thinking person' games. Some great standouts are Burgertime and it's Inty-only sequel Diner, Thunder Castle, the AD&D games (all 3 are excellent), most of the Imagic games, Hover Force, Dreadnaught Factor, Nightstalker and Tron Deadly Disks. I can’t remember the exact score but i think when i would get to around 25,000 score, there was something in the AI that would make the game super hard. My biggest problem with Intellivision was that blasted controller. I remember it being really difficult to go in a chosen cardinal direction, like what looks like what happens to you at 9:45 -- if you are moving left or right and want to go up, if you're not pushing at the exact 12 o'clock position on the disc, it would take the very slight left or right as the priority and move you left or right instead. I'll take that carpal-tunnel-inducing Colecovision controller over it any day, since at least it seemed to understand discrete up, down, left, and right.

Looks like a fun little game here. I don't have much experience with later Intellivision games, mainly the launch era titles but one I can recommend wholeheartedly is also from Imagic, The Dreadnaught Factor. The best side-scrolling shooter until Uridium on the C64 imo. It can be very tactical, go for the vents and fast kill? or try to bomb the engines and slow the dreadnaught down before it blows Earth up? Some of the later dreadnaughts get absolutely fiendish. You would love it, and it only needs 2 buttons: shoot and bomb. I hope you cover it!

The keypad inserts were absolutely necessary to play the games, and you couldn’t throw away the instructions. 😂 As you explore, also know that there were a number of 2 player only games. My favorite of all time was Utopia, and you just can’t do it solo. I played it "back in the day", as well as play it occasionally now as a retro game collector. The Donkey Kong inspiration is certainly strong, but Beauty and The Beast made enough changes to not feel like a ripoff. Polish-wise, I think introduction some of the difficulty aspects could have been spaced out a bit more: Splitting boulders after the first building, large diagonal boulders after the 2nd, splitting diagonal boulders after the 3rd, etc. As it is, it feel like it suddenly getting really tough really fast. Also, it would have benefitted from clearing the stage after a hit and starting you back at the bottom left. This way you don't keep getting hit by the same stuff. If you're digging into Intellivision for the first time, I suggest checking out the D&D game (later renamed to "D&D Cloudy Mountain" to separate it from the later D&D game they did). Lock & Chase is another great game on the system.

I believe the Imagic Intellivision games are part of the acquisition. Activision has the rights to Imagic's Atari 2600 games but what was INTV had the rights to the Imagic Intellivision games and even released a compilation years ago. Beauty & The Beast was a freebie so I played it. It's not too bad.

I hope you're right about the acquisition assets. I'm eager to see an official list.

@GenXGrownUp Yes, a tier review of Imagic's Intellivision releases would be nice to see. Imagic released quite a few exclusives such as Beauty & The Beast, Swords & Serpents, Dracula and Microsurgeon.

This looks more interesting than actual Donkey Kong. Has better scenery and an actual building and several different actions going on. Pretty cool. Id see if it was emulated thru another method like for pc. The GSP/atari system isnt able to play intellivision games?

Nova storm. Probably the best version is on intellivision. I have it on colecovision also, seems slower. Controls are better though. Check it out, it's a defender clone with additional aspects.

So, according the the official Digital Eclipse Twitter, and Mike Mika, the Imagic games are actually included in the Intellivision deal, so... Maybe?

That would be great - I'm still eagerly awaiting a full list of what was included. 😁

It may lack some fairness in gameplay but there are lots of unnecessary flourishes that would not have made it onto a 2600 cartridge, like the falling sequence and the way the words blow in the wind. And Hank looks less like a angry gingerbread man than DK did on the 2600

It's too bad that Activision already acquired Imagic... That said, it's not impossible for Atari to license some arcade titles or even Imagic & Activision games and put them out on cartridge. I want to play all of these games and more on the 2600+!
@GenXGrownUp
@GenXGrownUp Месяц назад
With the established physical cartridge slot and controller design, I really can't see a path forward for INT on the 2600+, but I wouldn't rule out an Intellivision+ in our futures!

Imagic made a lot of good intellivision games I liked white water I think it was called you travel down a river in a raft and jump out for treasure. Awesome game Atlantis was a lot better than atari also every intellivsion game had overlays they really used the keypad. Football was so awesome running different plays

From the titles I've explored so far, it seems they can be utilized in different ways and maybe don't require racing the scanline? Looking forward to learning more about INTV.
