I know this felt like a fail for you, Graeme, but I'm glad you showed it to us. It's important to know what the limits of care are, and exactly WHEN other methods of care need to come into play. You've absolutely ruled out the hoof as the source of the problem (and showed us how exactly you do that!), and that's important for the farmer, too. Now they know where to focus their care. (I think this is the first time you've mentioned your rule-of-thumb about the inner claw, too.)
@alexisgrunden1556
@alexisgrunden1556 Год назад
Agreed; even though Graeme couldn't fix her lameness, he could at least balance out her hooves. And now the farmer knows to call in a vet, since Grame's ruled out everything foot-related~
@IamGulzow

Using hoof testers is just like a doctor putting pressure and a patient's sore spot just to really figure out where exactly the pain is coming from. You are not causing damage you are simply identifying the pain. Good work, sir.
@taliag09
@taliag09 Год назад
Agree - it sort of sucks to 'hurt' a patient but it helps diagnose issues. There are certain signs we look for when patients come in with complaints, and they're literally testing pain level when applying pressure to the suspected source of the pain. We literally induce a pain response. But it's how we investigate potential conditions unfortunately

When my last dog had bone cancer which came out of the blue (suddenly went lame, was at the vet's in the hour), Metacam gave her back some life. It took away her pain and she outlived her 2 week prognosis by 2 months. It was only when that ceased to work so well, and her eyes told me it was time, did I call the vet out. I'm really feeling for that little cow as I'm permanently on a different NSAID for osteoarthritis and trigeminal neuralgia (I'm allergic to the "proper" treatment for that and don't fancy brain surgery!) Having seen the results of Metacam for different reasons on different hounds, I'm quite annoyed that it's not for humans. That's good stuff! Hopefully it'll work its magic on her asap :)

I am in chronic pain (joints) and I cant use painkillers, built up tolerance to the one I could tolerate. I use hot baths and cat skin (old folk remedy) it is supposed to be extra warm. mine is warm but maybe that is the cat inside it!

I've got one like that right now - had a massive massive bull calf. Gave her rest of about a week with painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Back in with the milkers getting some exercise and slowly improving. We are 24/7 outside dairy farming
@amgoudman

Is there a particular reason this happens in recent calvers? Something to do with weight changes or calcium deficiency? (I'm curious as I'm a nurse for humans and I don't think we have a comparable condition in human women.)

Love your videos. Very informative. I am a dairy farmer in New Zealand, and i use your videos to help teach my staff on how to treat lame cows. I noticed in this video that this cow had recently calved. I have seen this with the odd one of my girls, and it can be caused from a pinching of the nerve running down their hip from the calf coming out. The farmer has done the right thing by having her in a pen to reduce her walking around too much, and the anti-inflammatory will do her the world of good, and after a good rest she will come right. It might take some time, but she will get better.
@Woodlily617

Thank you for the insight on why it can be an issue with recently calved cows
@drrichardpaul
@drrichardpaul Год назад
Having your hips spread like that means there’s always a chance for what you’ve said. It compresses the nerve, which could cause what’s known as Referred Pain. Any female that gives birth risks the chance of this happening. It’s one reason why doctors and vets recommended these kinds of problems take a hospital bed/pen to relieve stress and pain, letting the natural healing do its thing.

The hoof tester actually reminded me of getting checked for a stress fracture by using a tuning fork rested on the bone to see if the vibrations made the spot of a crack hurt. The test is often often the only way to tell without a hugely expensive bone scan as they don't usually show up on x-rays.
