We invite you to join us on a journey toward true community and a sustainable way of life for all!

0:00 - What do you get from community?
1:18 - Dancing in the wild
6:56 - Returning home after the visitor program
12:50 - How do you make a living in rural Missouri?
15:52 - On the visitor program
22:42 - Sharing vehicles and food
29:43 - Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage
31:36 - Straw bale insulation
37:52 - How to live a sustainable life
43:34 - The silver lining to death
46:57 - It takes a village to build a culture
52:22 - How would you change the village?
Dancing Rabbit is an ecovillage, sustainability demonstration project, and robust and growing intentional community in rural northeast Missouri.
"At Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage (DR), we understand how difficult it can be to live sustainably and responsibly within modern US culture. We believe that we can work to build a healthy alternative: a social structure that is both non-exploitative and vibrant. As our village grows, we see this ideal take shape more clearly every day: a diverse range of people living ecologically sound lives in a community that truly serves as an example of positive human action within the natural world.
In 1997 the DR Land Trust (DRLT) purchased 280 acres in the rolling hills of northeastern Missouri. We are now deep into pioneering-constructing buildings while continuing to plan and develop community structure. There is an ever-increasing emphasis on internal economy, which includes bartering and an internal currency. Eventually, we see 500 to 1,000 people living in our village, with businesses and homes surrounding the town center."

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for all of the positive comments and feedback! I started this documentary series 4 years ago, and didn't receive enough interest or funding at the time to continue with it. All of you are definitely inspiring me to look at doing more episodes. I think now more than ever, the idea of intention community living is incredibly important for humanity's future. I'm going to ask some people from Dancing Rabbit to start answering some of your questions, and will start answering the ones that I can. And, I've got hours more footage that you haven't seen yet. I'm going to start creating some short videos for you out of it. I appreciate you all very much! ~ Blue

I love Dancing Rabbit community. I almost moved there but hit a few snags at that time. However as much as I love it and as much as it's wonderful and the people are wonderful, it's not going to change anything. It's like a little patch of smooth skin on a body of pox. What needs to happen is get rid of the idea of committees. That is patriarchal in its framework. Rather, enable a totally sovereign individual system that allows every person to make a proposal and every person to vote (or not vote, whatever each individual feels like doing) on the proposals. A new framework needs to be built. Also once you get the hang of that, stop paying for registering cars, stop getting driver's licenses and then go even further, incrementally building on each step towards integrated individual sovereignty. This is not hard! All it needs is the will! Keeping the same processes we do under patriarchy will have only minor change, only temporary change even if all you do is good. We need new systems that are durable and uphold the highest connection to equality.
@deniseward002

Oh, and start worker cooperations (rather than corporations or businesses - ugh) and use an alternative exchange (money) system. It's an oxymoron to want to change the world while also making profit from a business. That whole concept needs to be composted. And we shouldn't have to go anywhere, to a special place or village. If Dancing Rabbit is to be a model of anything really new, it has to change its very fundamental mental structure. The people are lovely and would be wonderful to live with but a village of like minded people is an artificial community. In real communities, there are all sorts of characters, belief systems, habits, etc. Therefore Dancing Rabbit would be better suited to holding lotteries for members to come into the community.

Astrologically speaking it seems like intentional community is definitely the way of our future. Over regulation and permitting is truly a hindrance to creative building on the coasts where I live. Laborious and expensive to the point of being prohibitive. Love the process of general consensus rather than domineering Roberts rules. So much better for community.

An old hippie friend told me as a child, "find a place to live where people care for their elders, and have rituals to bury their dead". At eighteen it seemed silly, but I've always remembered it...most found it in small towns, the smaller the closer as they've had to learn to live WITH each other somehow. Takes a lot of personal development and growth that are vastly underestimate by outsiders.

Intentional community is a great concept. Society is alienating; so many people get left alone, no purpose. We're social creatures, and most of us thrive in a supportive environment. The country needs more of this.

But whenever you get a group of like-minded people, we must understand that it is a completely artificial setting. Real life doesn't happen like that. Oh it's lovely to be surrounded with people who care about the environment, however the majority of people couldn't give a flying crap about the environment. And if we want that to change, then we must start working on changing the belief systems and talking to people who are not in the clique.

@@deniseward002 change your life then you will influence others, not by telling 'them' to change! You think it isn't real life but these are real people who came together to do something real together. THat is real life and they are influencing others by their example. @@thecitizenfarmer7700 Others can live whichever way they like but it doesn't mean we can't comment on it. Like I say, we need strategies to really change not just come together in an artificial community of like-minded people because life isn't like that. Also these people need to lay down some guidelines so that people can live in the proper way without having to go make up an artificial community. They should be able to change from wherever they're planted. We need behavioral change, not moving to a new community. We need strategies like getting off the money system and ways we can help each other do that; holding talks to teach the new theories to children so they are not just being indoctrinated with babblespeak, talking all the time and demonstrating clean living principles, energy saving principles, promoting hemp and other natural rapidly renewable raw materials, discussing and finding ways to use energy sources as locally as possible, restructuring the soil, new building codes that make towns sustainable. But all they do is really act like celebrities and show themselves to be rather elitist in my view. They are not out to change humanity, they just want to look out for themselves, like people in everywhere.

Even as the hurricanes roll in and half the country burn, no one questions it. Its so bizarre to me.. It isnt realistic to even attempt to live a more earth friendly life in a place like this. It was so lovely to hear how they'd like to see things change even though they already love it so much. One of my biggest fears that I have about moving to an ecovillage like this is one that several of them actually touched on, and that is how accepting they'll be towards gay and trans people like me. I love hearing that they're already looking for more queer people and there are already people out there like me who are living the kind of life I want to have! It makes me hopeful that I'll be able to find the kind of community that I'm looking for :)

A beautiful eco village community! And with so much to share and teach, I agree with Rae that it is a pity that the location is so remote, it is hard to bring city folk in and for the commuity to sell produce, crafts, art etc. Permaculture, as a topic is gaining traction around the world and is applicable whether you have land or not. We have a small plot of land in S France and apply PDC principles - also looking to connect with intentional commuities in Europe to see how they differ.

Such a great story in this documentary! Thank you for producing this, I am so happy this community exists. I live in Portland, OR and there are some community spaces in the city doing this too; places to join these communities are always limited. We need more like these! I would love to join an intentional community in the PNW region. Right now I'm living in a small intentional space with three friends oriented around our shared dietary need to avoid gluten. It would be great to knit together larger community spaces to be more established with ongoing intentional relationships in the bigger picture. Much love!

Very interesting but not surprising to see that as the community grew, the governing process has moved from consensus (i.e. direct democracy) towards elected representatives and decisions informed by committee, much like the standard system of the federal, state, and most local governments. I wonder how long the sense of "intentional community' can last without keeping firm limits on the size of the community and/or prohibiting private ownership of businesses?
@renenberg5792
@renenberg5792 3 года назад
With sociocracy the power is balanced across the people doing the work...and anyone can join the work and add their voice. Obviously, you can't do direct consensus processes over a certain number of people if you ever want to decide anything and move forward. In sociocracy if you want to participate in decisions and elections you just have to show up. Generally, I believe the option of private business is dependent on how much resource it uses. If, for instance, you want a private farming business on the community land, you have to somehow make up for the fact that everyone there is paying for the shared land that you're using. But with any community, the limits and decisions must be based on the agreed on values that the community is adopted. As long as they remain at the center of decisions and involvement in decision making is accessible to anyone that wants it....it works.

DR ( dancing Rabbit) is actually a wonderful place for introverts. Yes, there are community buildings and stuff, but you live in your own house. There's plenty of privacy when you want it. The nice thing is there's also community when you need it. You don't have to any community events if you don't want to. Sometimes I'd just stay inside my house all day, or I'd go on a walk in the land. I moved away last year and I miss it dearly

I like the idea of living in a place like this but I enjoy spending too much time by myself for the sake of being my individual self and to take a break from people any reality. And on top of that, because of my upbringing and having to always share a space and being homeschooled with somewhat strict and protective parents, I usually prefer my own space or have things to and for myself. I’ve never been very community oriented because of everything I mentioned so it would take time for me to eventually open up to people. And working to live doesn’t sound too bad.

Hi, Great video, enjoyed every second and felt deep empathy and understanding of what some people said. I would really like to join such a community myself, and I have been searching the internet for such for a year now, and I think the best two are Dancing Rabbit and Twin Oaks, those look like stable ones that won't fall apart in the future... I also have a question, do you happen to know if Dancing Rabbit community accepts new members? and if so, do they accept members only from the US or from abroad too?

I'm a web dev who works remotely and would love this kind of life. I have a good income, and giving half away is fine by me, as long as the "commons" are worth it. I cook in a communal kitchen for homeless people, and it's very clear to me how much efficiency gains we can have by cooking or making things in common, given how we are a team of 8 and we feed 500+ people per night. Unfortunately, my wife and I don't want to live in the USA, we are Canadians living in France, but an eco-village like this... wow. Also, we do not and will not have kids, and we notice how many ecovillages ask for families to come. I understand that they want the next generation on site, but it makes it harder to find a place for us.

Hey Rebecca, I'm cringing now, 4 years later, about how I spoke in full on gender binary about that topic! We ended up adjusting the policy so that we can have no more than x% (is it 60%? I'm not checking the decision index right now) of folks who identify as male. Our balance is actually pretty great right now. We have one person currently who identifies as nonbinary and just about exactly 50/50 otherwise, maybe even somewhat more folks who identify as women. There is always something that is "up," it happened to be gender balance at that time, but it didn't persist.
