I love the idea of a series on the channel helping renters make their spaces beautiful! And as far as resolutions go mine this year is to fear less so that I can live more.
Great video but another tip is if you don’t know the color of the walls you can scrape a tiny sample about the side of a dime and take that paint chip to home depo or I think any hardware store and they put in in a machine and color match it for you 👍
We purchased our home 3 years ago and after getting pregnant immediately after moving in we are just getting around to doing some updates. These are great for homeowners who do not have an unlimited budget
You are so correct about renting and elevating the “space” to make it more desirable. All of your tips, tricks and ideas are so awesome! We had to rent for several years and had a fantastic landlord. We rented directly through him, so we were able to negotiate the month cost and he knew we kept everything clean and cared for.
I used the peel and stick tile for the bottom of my bathroom cabinet that had stained and were gross looking. Love it! I also used a peel and stick wood planks in my laundry room that was just the concept slab and it was super easy to do and looks like wood!
I LOVE this video! We aren’t even renting but I just enjoyed watching and the ideas you have. This is good even for first time home buyers who don’t have a ton of money. Thanks for sharing!
Small word to the wise: I one got permission to fix up a rental. After spending every weekend for months taking a hundred hooks and nails out of the walls, spackling the holes, cleaning, priming, and painting, we did a walkthrough with landlady, who (I swear this is true!) said, “This is beautiful. Now you know I’m going to have to raise the rent. This is a much more valuable property now.” I of course couldn’t afford the rent hike, moved out, and found out later that she rented it for a pittance to her daughter! Lesson learned: if it’s not in writing you have NO legal right to enjoy the fruits of your labor on someone else’s property!!! Oh, did I mention that the bathroom was literally neon orange when we moved in and a soft, light, buttery yellow with white trim when I was done? Everyone thought I should repaint it neon orange on the way out, but that would have been vandalism and illegal. Don’t vandalize, just learn your lesson and move on to saving for your own home!
I aim to enjoy every day and seriously not sweat the small stuff. Getting upset never helps so really focusing on how I react to life.....so far, so good! :)
I think you are absolutely adorable ❤️ I love your style! Thank you these ideas are awesome!!! Can’t wait to try them Specially the marble contact paper and the backsplash paper that you used great idea they look very pretty in your space
Love these ideas! We actually negotiated our rent before moving in to our current rental house and pay $200 less per month just because we asked! My husband and I have lived in rentals for the past 4 years and I'm all about decorating/updating our rental space on a budget. Some of these hacks are a little spendy for what we can afford but I love the spray painting the hardware hack and using putty to cover holes/painting. We've done both of those things and our rental already looks SO much better!
Just found your channel and I love it! Thanks for all of the great tips. My resolution is to become more purposeful and mindful in all areas of my life.
I'm doing all the same things in our kitchen in our studio! I was inspired when you showed your kitchen transformation ... and lol I am painting the handles without asking either (shhhhh) 😁 I'm so excited for all the things with yours and your mom's business ❤❤❤
Most people break their resolutions, so I don't have any... I do however plan to lose 20+ lbs in 2020. I already lost 10-15 lbs last year on the diet I created and I started it in late September so 20 or more lbs this year seems totally doable!
Just watching your videos makes me miss San Diego/Encinitas so bad 😭. We moved to Austin & it is a great place, but just miss the San Diego vibe so much... the ocean, the landscape there. Can’t wait to see when you all visit Charleston. Love these tips! ❤️
Home Depot can exact color match any paint color if you bring them a quarter sized piece from your wall. Since you're re-painting anyway, you can chip a piece off to bring in to the store.
Just wanna say, I am not that active on youtube and rarely comment or subscribe to people. This video was so helpful with your real life examples and you are so animated and adorable!!
Just started following you! Love these tips!! How hard was it to apply the contact paper to the countertops? Would love to try this idea, to cover up my blue laminate counters!
Great tips! I've definitely used the magic erasers quite a bit and also had to use the wall patching kit when my puppy chewed a hole in a wall... yikes! It worked like a charm though!
Not sure if you would have any interest but it would be really cool if subscribers could submit a challenge in there home with pictures and you do a post on ways to tackle it. I know I have a few things I am just stumped on.
I’ve always been so weary about putting a rug on the carpet, but my house is covered in this ugly green carpet, so I may just have to get a big ass rug and try to conceal it!! Thanks Sharrah!!
I have used the sticky floor tiles and they have been there for about 15years. I put a sub floor down to make sure it was an even surface area, and just went to town. With that, make sure you do buy extra because I did replace a "high traffic" area square[a few months ago]. I also used a swiffer wet jet/cleaner and whatever cleaner on hand. And like I said it's been about 15 years on this floor☺👍👍
Ny resolutions are to save money and learn how to use all of my power tools that I’ve bought, and to learn to build a few pieces of furniture that I really want to learn to make. Also, I’m Angie from Texas and I just came across your channel and subscribed 😊
I love your videos for rentals. I have question. What is your suggestion for adding drawer pulls and cabinet handles to doors and drawers that do not have them?
I'm sure it varies by area, but in Oklahoma (and I think a lot of nearby states), the walls throughout the house are satin and the walls in the bathrooms and kitchen are semi-gloss. The only matte paint is on the ceiling. Maybe we're just messy around here though :-P
Yes please I am pregnant with a 5 year old and my little family are seriously looking for an affordable place to rent while we find our forever home. My husband is a home builder /general contractor so maybe that’ll be a plus. Do a series or come out and help us in Michigan 😬
I’m renovating one of my rental properties right now, gutting it down to the studs. It’s costing over $20,000 and I cannot imagine allowing one of my tenants to do anything permanent or attaching fixtures to my home. I’m a great landlord and I would consider allowing changes if they are done by a licensed, insured contractor and approved by me in advance. It’s terrible advice to “ask for forgiveness instead of permission”. I’m an attorney who drafts my leasing contracts with great care and if a tenant damages or alters anything in violation of our contract, it’ll be an expensive legal nightmare for them. I want my tenants to enjoy the beautiful property at a reasonable rent and personalize their space and I’d be willing to help if there’s something they want or need in the space, but I would be LIVID if they altered my property in hopes that “I would like it”, because, trust me, I won’t!
A lot of landlords don't provide adequate storage, let alone a beautiful property tho. iIt's pretty difficult to make a place a home if you have no where to put things and can't even put a picture on the wall.
Often the owners won’t let us paint because we’re not professional but yes I colour match and paint without them knowing. Owners don’t like renters renovating so negotiating rent is not possible, it’s different for you, you have a team to help paint etc.
Command strips damaged my wall. The heat in the apartment affected them and when it came time to remove them, they ripped the paint off as well. Never again. I’m just putting holes and will deal with it later Magic erasers are also NOT good on flat paint. It leaves visible marks. Only on semi gloss does it work well
Yes! I have the same problem with both. The command strips in my son’s room ripped the paint off. So now II have to match the paint 😕 We have the flattest paint on earth on our walls. If you look at them, they stain, so erasers are not an option. Water and mild soap may help. With kids, though, it can be a losing battle. I finally told them, that the walls were lava 😂
Yay! You are back, and for renters. That's me, a renter! My goal for 2020 is to have a few months of "NO SPEND" to save money. Then spend it on decorating my apartment.
As a longtime viewer of Dateline I can honestly say that was the worse attempt to disguise someone's identity that I've ever seen. As someone who enjoys a good laugh I can honestly say that was hilarious! I really enjoy getting ideas on how to decorate my space. I'm a renter whose apartment complex says that I can't paint the walls even if I paint them back before moving out. They're this unpleasant beige, kinda tan, kinda light brownish color that I don't like at all. But I'm making changes where I can. And I like these videos that give me ideas on how to make my apartment feel like it reflects my own style.
No resolutions here, just looking to make small lifestyle changes but know that there will be setbacks. It's easy to give up on a New Year resolution after a setback, but small changes take time. We'd love a series on rental upgrades! We live in the Boston area ;-)
Sharrah these ideas a great! I love the home tool kit bag. Is that a kinwoven tool bag? I didn't see it in the link you provided for the bags. Thank you for always sharing wonderful ideas.
First of all I'd like to say you're an inspiration.. I love watching all your videos specially all the organization ones ..🤩 quick question where did you get your shelves.? Been meaning to ask you for almost decade now .lol
Sarah Hutchinson the glass/black ones in the living room? IKEA!! They have them in white or black (and easily spray paintable) and different configurations and they’re such a reasonable price!
Careful with Magic Erasers! I used them on my white painted interior doors...it got off the motor oil fingerprints from the boys...BUT totally took of the gloss finish in the areas that I used it!!!
Hi, new to your channel. Came across it well searching for decorating a rental. Watched your episode on design style. When will you post for Traditional Style. I'm a mixture of traditional and farmhouse. Trying to combine both at this time. Love your channel so far.
***safety alert regarding magic eraser sponges*** Using this product to freshen up the tiles in my shower and was so impressed with result especially as no chemicals were needed. So impressed and as I was in the shower at the time I grabbed the second sponge from the pack and used it to remove the fake tan build up on my neck. By the time I got to work I looked as if I'd got caught up in a nuclear attack on my way in. Apparently they use a ground glass sort of stuff, well that's what the first aid woman said however she also asked what cleanser I used, anyhow with three weeks and a lot of baby bum cream I could go out without a scarf.
