I have been painting for 30 years professionally and I charge the roller before I put it on the wall like I was shown during my apprenticeship and I have never had the issue you mention. Also you use a lot of masking tape for straight lines, most pros can freehand and have a nice line no matter the surface.
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 4 года назад
All I can say to that is that I have seen so many so-called professional lines that veer off the wall onto Woodwork even if it’s in the slightest degree; I do not like it and so I charge a very professional rate and I give them the absolute best that I can give and that method is with tape

The first textured surface video ive seen JUST like mine. It took me awful paint marks on my ceilings to figure out how to properly cut in just like you're showing. But my question is this, ive done my first coat and while this is my very first paint job, i of course have spots that the original color is peeking through so im sure i have to do a second coat. My first cut ins are thick with paint, do i have to cut in my entire room again? Can i just roll my second coat the entrire room or can i just roll a second coat on the areas that are thin covered? Im using pittsburgh paramount flat green, like a olive drab color, a 1/2 nap microfiber roller. Any help would be great! Thank you! Btw, I LOVED the tip about the horizontal rolling after the cut in!! None of the videos ive seen ever did that! Beautiful! New subscriber just for that alone! No need to roll out brush marks on a high wall. The higher the wall , the harder it is to see imperfections. But ideally you roll into wet cuts at the top of your wall.

@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 3 года назад
1. Did you apply the paint that came up? That’s key to trying to answer you. If you did, was it cured? Was it painted onto the surface it was applied to that would assure that it was sticky enough? Such as , was the surface scuffed you with a sanding sponge? Was it too shiny that would help it come off and pull the plaster too?
@broadband1820
@broadband1820 3 года назад
@@spencercolgan Yes I painted the surface. It was dry if that's what you mean by cured. It wasn't scuffed up and I used tape that was low adhesive. If I remember correctly and I could be wrong here, from your vid . did you apply the tape to a freshly painted surface, I mean dry to the touch. If you did this is basically what I did and was shocked when the paint came off.

Spencer instead of tagging the wall with the paint for the baseboards why don't you just put some frog tape across the bottom of the wall it's so much faster than coming back and having to touch up your wall.. takes hardly no time to put a piece of tape and caulk, now you can splash your paint on and then remove the tape AND YOUR DONE!. You should also be using frog tape to cut that straight line in the corner I don't think you're using the right tape ,you got too much adhesion on there it could pull the surface off . thank you brother..i learned how to do vinyl wall covering at work many yrs ago..and repairing it ,patching it..i love the challange.. thanks for all your tips and tricks......lol thanks for the breathing advise hahahahhaha.

Hey Spencer I want to do your clear caulking trick to get prefect straight lines but in the UK it's very difficult to get clear caulk I saw this other trick on RU-vid and I wanted your thoughts To get a straight line between the trim and the wall first you mask the painted trim and then apply a light coat of the trim paint in the gap between the tape and the wall. This creates a seal so your wall paint doesn't bleed onto the trim. After this dries you can cut and paint over this and remove the tape for a straight crisp line. What do you think? Or is there any other way if I can't get clear caulk Please advise

@@spencercolgan So if I can't get clear caulking I just use a dry brush for each coat. Got it thanks Spencer there's one more thing I need clarity on If I mask the painted trim and cut in the first coat with dry brush as we just discussed. Then I take off the tape while the paint is still wet to get a straight line and role the wall. Now for the second coat do I need to mask the trim again and repeat the process? Do I mask twice to protect the trim or is there a better way?

I have a really dumb newbie question...why don't I just tape the ceiling edges (same way you did the trim) to prevent my wall paint from touching the ceiling? Is it just because that would take too long? I don't fully trust myself to do four walls 12' in length (48 linear feet) without going over even *once*.

Bird it’s an excellent question but it’s almost physically impossible to be looking up at the ceiling and keep your tape line straight; your body loses its perspective once you turn your body around and you’re looking upward

Will caulking the bottom of the base cause issues later with expansion? Or aren't you using enough to matter.

If you don't have a partner who is rolling behind you as you cut in, and you are concerned about the cut-ins drying before you have the chance to roll, can you let the cut-ins dry - and roll a couple of hours later? Thanks!

It’s an excellent excellent thought provoking question. You are obviously a perfectionist! Your answer is no; and I am I am going to post a video below after I finish this comment I will simply edit my comment to include a video; the halo effect is what you will get if you do let it dry and come back later On. please see the video that I will post momentarily Here is the video of what will happen if you let it dry ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jfAcyZaPm-k.html

That tape could remove the finish on stained trim.

You’re correct. In that case, I’d go with yellow frog tape Thomas.

Thanks what's wrong with blue. It's cheaper than the yellow and could still do the caulk technique.

You also know that with tape and caulk your line might look straight but it still isn’t perfect because the paint dries at a different rate than the caulk and if you don’t take off your tape fast enough you could get into trouble and it is also messy getting rid of the wet tape.
