I’m 60 years old. Former all natural bodybuilding champion ( 30 years ago) but have always worked out and have been a 16-8, 18,6 faster. I have just started incorporating longer term fasting into my regimen and I love it. I’ve only done it twice so far , first time was 36 hour snd today I’m finishing a 48 hour fast. The cognitive benefits I get is huge snd very noticeable to me. I plan on doing a 48 hour fast now once a month along with my 16-8, and 18-6 routine. I watch everything you put out there and find your video some of the best. Thank you for your work.

I did IF for months straight last time. I lost weight very well. This time around, I am doing something different. 5 days during the work week, I do IF 16:8 and 2 meals a day, and on weekends, I eat 2 to 3 meals a day, and I am eating at or near my TDEE and lifting weights, and walking, but lightly, and plenty of rest days. I am losing weight slower, but as long as I am losing, I'll continue, and ratchet down slightly each time I need to. This is my 3rd round of Keto, and I'[m down over 100 lbs, yet I have yoyoed because of a surgery, where I had to quit Keto for several months, but I am still down that original 100lbs, I had lost even more pre surgery the 2nd time on keto, and was near my goal weight. But those months off low carb this time, caused almost 30 lbs weight gain. I'm down 12 lbs from that now eating the way I am with IF again. Basically, cutting the carbs, and IF, are the two biggest changes. I had about 8-9 lbs of water weight, the rest is this WOE. So, my sitting around for 5 months unable to do anything physical, turned me to mush and made me weak. (Spinal Fusion). I am just now getting back to where I was pre surgery physically. So Body recomp is going on, slowing weight loss as well. But, fat loss is on schedule. That is the important thing.
@boxadorsrus5991

@Larry Seago Similar story here. This is my fifth time around in twelve years on reduced carbohydrate dieting. The first three times I just avoided overtly sugary things like desserts but kept drinking regular soda. The fourth time around, my wife had the whole family on a Atkins-like diet with a Dr. Gundry twist, so to speak. This fifth time around, I have followed the advise of a dozen different RU-vidrs in the keto and intermittent fasting space. In every system I've tried I've lost 50 to 60 pounds. My wife and three kids have also been able to lose weight effectively, to the degree they apply themselves to the task. Anyway, now I fast 12 to 20 hours six days a week with 50 grams of carbs a day followed by one day a week between 150 to 300 grams of carbs. This "metabolic flexibility" is advocated by many keto/IF RU-vidrs. Good luck and improved health to all who take the initiative!

I don't know if I agree that a prolonged fast would lower metabolism "if you've already hit an IF plateau." Keeping the logic that it's a different mechanism, I think a 2+ day fast would help your metabolism normalize - provided your nutrition is on point when you break fast.

I recently switched to 48hr (one meal every other day) to lose some weight and seems to be working great so far. One benefit I don't see mentioned is cost; You're essentially halving your food bill, which in my case has allowed me to eat higher quality fresher food on my eating days.

For weight loss, I've been doing OMAD most days of the week, trying to keep it Sub-1000cals, sometimes as low as 300cals. Saturday or Sunday I eat like... 1500cals, and that's a feed day. I've started doing 48 fasts at the beginning of the week, so Monday I might not eat at all, and then go back to OMAD sub-1000 on Tuesday. I've started trying to lean into Low Carb/Keto as well.

He is right I was doing 20-4 fasting for about one month during weekdays and managed to loose 15 pounds, I was very motivated so I continued for another month but only managed to loose 5 pounds then I did a 24 hour fast one friday aside from the 20-4 from monday to thursday after only one week of this I managed to loose another 5 pounds just in one week. It's crazy how this thing really works during my eating periods I don't watch what I eat i wouldn't say I eat unhealthy tho, I even eat some fast food sometimes but in general I tried to cook at home steak, beans, salmon shrimp. Aside from loosing weight you feel a-lot more energetic I even started hiking because you feel like somehow you need to burn off your energy, this is aside from playing soccer almost everyday. The days I don't do exercise I can't sleep that's the biggest side-effect I would say.

@3:30 Of course you are going to have a reduction in your basal metabolic rate if you restrict calories by 25% for several months BECAUSE YOU ARE LOSING WEIGHT!!!!!!!! Lower body mass will reduce your metabolic rate all other things being equal. During the "several months" you are restricting calories by 25%, you should lose well over 10% of body weight and therefore your metabolic rate will decrease. Since fat is not as metabolically active as lean mass, you will want to lose well over the 8%-10% you are losing in metabolic rate, but it WILL come down carrying less mass.

Jason Fung has addressed this. Many organ systems down-regulate energy usage in response to sustained calorie deprivation; which just doesn't occur with fasting. We aren't a physics problem, we're a biochemical one. In other words, metabolism during CR slows MORE than you'd expect from weight loss alone. Check out his work, he mentions this quite often. Leveraging hormonal changes is what the Calories in Calories out paradigm totally misses the ball on. Though generally speaking CICO is a rule of thumb.

Just figured out that I ate barely 50% of my daily Kcal I need and this problably f*ed up my metabolism. Losing weight will be a struggle for a lifetime I'm afraid. I will take a 3 to 4 week break from IF, eat 7 meals a day and count my calories... From 1700kcal a day to 3.000kcal a day. I exercise 4 times a week. Will begin with IF again after 4 weeks I think... But will count my calories on the fasting days trying to not f*up my metabolism again.

I’m confused with the metabolic rate talk. Since IF like OMAD is making the body to burn fat, caloric reduction due to lesser quantity of food intake should not affect metabolic for people what have lots of stored fats that do IF for weight loss. Dr Jason Fong also mentioned the same. It should be perfectly fine to switch IF OMAD and prolonged 48 or 72 fast since fats are fueling the body despite reduction of calorie intake. My understanding is wrong?🤔😶

I feel like my body became super efficient at conserving energy after that 4 day fast. I’m going to try to work out more intensely to see if that helps. From what I understand, there's nothing written in stone. There's a lot of variables. I'm 65. I've done IF, and, prolonged fasts for years. Depended on what I was going through at the time. My fasts long ago were more for spiritual benefits, not health benefits. And, what I learned through the years, is that, God, who knew we needed the health benefits of fasting, commanded us to fast, and, pray, unbeknown to us, the health benefits of both. There are lots of videos on the topic if you don't get an answer back from Tom, many of his own. He has videos for both men, and, women on the topic. May God be with you!

Thomas, how do you approach prolonged fasting (24 hours plus) if you're an athlete? I train at least 3 times per week but I sort of get intimidated I won't be able to function properly if I go say two days without eating. I don't think I saw a video of you explaining this for people who train regularly.

As a non athlete starting resistance training I find that in a fasted state I am weak and dizzy and perform poorly, even using a protein drink. I indulged to n two boiled eggs two hours before my last training session and it was a breeze. Other videos have cautioned against training mid fast as it puts too much stress on a body already stressed by no food
@Metrion77

Our muscles have their own glucose stores. When those run out, our bodies will burn fats. But fats don't burn as fast as glucose. If you're in Keto or during a fast when you're out of glucose, Thomas recommends slow exercises. Weight lifting. Endurance training. If your muscles start demanding more energy faster than your fats can burn, you'll start burning protein (assuming you don't just injure yourself).

I usually fast for 24 to 36 hours, have a cup of bone broth, then drink bulletproof coffee type drink with grass fed butter, mct oil and collagen. If the fasting period is hard to get through due to the carbs I ate, I'll drink a cup of coffee with a small pat of butter blended in. That usually gives me enough to push through. An hour after I drink bulletproof coffee my ketones are usually around 1.0mmol (measured using the KetoSens blood monitor) and my glucose is below 100mg. Then it's business as usual with my HFLC/Keto meals.
