I kept getting error lights for my 2008 SAAB 93's tail lights that there was an issue with the bulbs. All of them! This was an intermittent issue that was driving me crazy to find a fix, but I did and now I want to share it with you.
If you have tried changing the bulbs, using dielectric grease and cleaning the contacts, your car may be experience a broken contact due to a short-circuit meltdown. Don't panic though, it can be fixed!
Here is the link to the parts in the video:
All these parts are for a 2008 SAAB 93 Turbo, so make sure you order the correct parts for your car and model year if it is different. I purchased from eEuroparts.com where I've had success finding parts in the past, but most of these are readily available.

@SoWeBoughtaHouse, I had this exact meltdown happen to me last night. The wiring harness must've got hot and melted straight through to the silver side of the tri-bulb socket. This video is one of the only helpful resources I've found on this subject, so thanks for that! I was able to find a new socket with wiring harness attached to it at a junkyard that seems to be in relatively good shape. I snipped it about 8 inches down the chain. My plan is to snip off the old, melted wiring harness and use four splice connectors to marry the new harness and socket to the existing wiring. In your estimation, would this work? Logically, it seems as though it would, but we all know with Saab's; logic isn't always a factor!

Hi Arik. Thanks for the nice comment. Did the one from the junkyard have a connector. Based on what happened to mine I suspect they get wet and corrode over time leading to a short or bad connection that caused the heat build-up and eventually the meltdown. Since this issue seems common the junkyard part could already be experiencing the same issue. Can you remove the connector and inspect it? In theory wire splices are used Al the time. I try to minimize that as I don’t like the wire broken in any more places than needed which is why I replaces the connector. If you do the splice I would twist and solder the connection and than add shrink tubing to keep the water out and provide some strength. If you go that route I suggest doing some quick research on slicing wire is a car wiring harness, there are good videos out on that. Let me know if you have any other questions..

@11:32 No, dielectric grease is an insulator and doesn't conduct electricity! You can apply as much as you want..
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse 9 месяцев назад
I forget the context of that in the video but o usually mention using not too much. My reasons are it is messy and when pins are involved can cause issues with making a good connection when over applied. Did I make it sound like it conducted or misspeak?

@s1mph0ny Год назад
Excellent coverage on this topic. I'll have to see if I can fix some backup lights that are missing on my SAAB. There's no need to over-apply dielectric grease, but it also won't cause a short.
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse Год назад
True you barely need any. I sometimes put on too much but my thought is that when I insert the bulb I do it a couple of times so it transfers to the socket and gives me a little barrier against condensation. Whether it actually does who knows, but like you said it won't cause a short. Using way too much can pick up a lot of dirt and grime though. Are the bulbs just missing on your saab or is the entire holder?
@s1mph0ny
@s1mph0ny Год назад
@@SoWeBoughtaHouse All the bulbs are there, but I get no backup lights when in reverse. I assumed it was the transmission gear sensor in the past, but took the frames out and saw some corrosion the other day.

@@SoWeBoughtaHouse That's a good question, never got a message about failure for backup lights.

That is strange. What year is the car? It might be they are fine and there is and issue with controller. Does the car have the rear fog light option? If it does that function chares the bulbs I'm pretty sure.

Thanks for posting this,as it is the exact problem that i have. I dont see how to remove the locking tab. Is there a link that shows how to do it?
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse Год назад
The tiny locking tab on the electrical harness right? Or the really tiny retaining clip on the wire connector? The black plastic clip is pressured for so you pry it out with a small screw driver. It might be melted and brittle like mine though and you need to cut the plastic off. When you order the replacement parts and they are serrated it makes it a little easier to understand what you are looking at. It you are stuck you can email me at swbah.ken@gmail.com and I’d be happy to help walk you through it.

Hi! Is it possible to just cut the cables and strip them, instead of pushing the cables out and re-use them
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse 11 месяцев назад
Yes you can cut them. You’d just have to crimp new connectors on every wire so you need to make sure you order enough plus a few extra as unless you do a lot off crimping you likely have at least one go wrong. I pulled them all to show the diagnostic approach in the case where it might not be obvious if the problem was the wire. If the wires were fine you could put them back. I hope that helps. If you at questions let me know.

Thanks, but my Saab's wire harness for my 2007 is a bit different. I cannot figure out how to get the harness out. Spent 3 hours, various tools, stared at the new one looking for an angle on how and why this thing will not come out, or even budge for that matter? Any advice on how to get this to disconnect from the vehicle's wiring? Should I give up and just pay someone? Thanks.

Hi Jim. Can you send me a picture? Swbah.ken@gmail.com. The 2007 93 should use the same part, but the clips could be hard to see. It is possible they broke off and you don’t see the ends. Also it is possible they melted worse than mine.

Does anyone know how to turn off service light for AWD on a 2006 saab 9-7x 4.21
@SoWeBoughtaHouse
@SoWeBoughtaHouse Год назад
Good morning Kaylyn. Likely to turn the light off you need a code reader. It can read the error in the AWD that is turning on the light and then clear it. I use this one on my Saab (about $20). Alternatively you can bring it to a shop and have them run a diagnostic. ANCEL AD310 Classic Enhanced Universal OBD II Scanner Car Engine Fault Code Reader CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool-Black amzn.to/3GGChAB Now this will close the code the computer put out, but it will not fix any problems that might exist. You can also look up the code and see what the problem was. If the issue still exists, the light will come right back on. I'm not sure of any maintenance lights on Saab, only ones that turn on when there is an issue, so something may need to be repaired, I would start would the diagnostic and see what it says if anything. Let me know if it works or not or if it kicks out a problem code. Also check out this forum: www.saabcentral.com/threads/awd-service-light-intermittent.672073/
