With a population of over a billion people, India is the largest democracy in the world. As such, maintaining peace and security for such a large population can pose a daunting challenge for the government. Internal challenges have continually arisen since Independence, taking the form of insurgencies, caste disagreements, terrorist plots, electoral violence, sectarian conflicts and regional disputes.
A new volume entitled Internal Security in India: Violence, Order, and the State (Oxford, 2023) examines the evolving threats to Indian security and the state’s efforts to combat them. It analyzes the methods deployed by the Indian government, and the implications for the balancing act between preserving order vs. preserving true democracy.
Join Ashley J. Tellis in conversation with editors Amit Ahuja and Devesh Kapur, as well as Rachel Kleinfeld of the Carnegie Endowment, about the volume and the past, present, and future challenges of India’s internal security, and how the practices on the subcontinent compare with those around the world.

The nature of violence has changed in recent times. Violence is now driven by hatred driven by extreme ideology. I don't think violence has reduced. The characteristic of violence has diversified into uncharted territory.

the problem Dr Rahael has highlighted very well is that if violence is reduced by focusing on building state capacity and improved policing and not through building social contract and political and peace deals with insurgent groups then basically it is redirecting the groups towards coopting criminals and more radical elements and in turn directing the later towards parliaments. The cost of which is very high in the long run in terms of more centralisation, mafia control and reduced democracy.

Everyone knows that’s all kinds of violence in India has drastically reduced over the years. Yet there is daily propaganda against India by international media & activists. Such a sham.

Brilliant come back by Devesh around 49 minutes as to why Indian parliament and state parliaments have dozens and dozens of criminals 'elected', he thought about it and came back with 'they are like Donald Trump' 🤣🤣🤣🤣 These are the 'top class' that India exports to the west? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The best and rational commentary was by Rachel. Surprising that this video was left for people to comment.

A wonderfully objective and balanced conversation on an India related topic which I did not expect from an American forum!

Indians by nature are peace loving and like to co exist. It is foreign countries which are inimical to India's growth combined with dirty politics which sparks violence. Media adds to a hype ,thus projects a far more grim /alarming picture. India has remained calm and tranquil by and large. Let us not over hype this.

Amit & Devesh, may be start by admitting 1 truth (to hide that truth for no reason, India has invented millions of lies)? That truth is: - India is a British creation. Many other states in the world were similarly made but they don't lie completely about their creation. Amit & Devesh are completely defensive from the beginning. Devesh starts with comparing 'homicides' or crime in the 'west' and India. 95%-99% of crimes don't get reported in India. Not sure if this level of 'great intellectual depth (🤣) is intentional or reality of what India exports, and these people are in top American universities?
