INTERNATIONAL 1420 Axial-Flow Combine Harvesting Soybeans 

Gotta love that classic IH color scheme. Seemed like every farmer had one of these growing up in Central Illinois in the 1980s

I really love the IHC combines. They’re like a classic now even tho seems like yesterday they were the big machines that guys aspired to own. Watching them work brings nostalgia like 80s music does

I really can’t tell you the memories this brings back...I can still hear that feeder chain raddle and the 358 scream! I road one of theses from 300 hours when I bought it till 3000 when it left. Unreal machine! Thank you!

Great combine. The new models are cool with all their bells and whistles but this 1420 is a classic. Best quote “She earns her keep year after year”. Love the old machines.

I owned and operated an IHC 1420 back in the late 1980's till 1997. I had an 844 cornhead and an 820 20 foot floating head for soybeans. It was very easy to adjust and I could get a great sample going 3.5-4.0mph in corn and 3.0-3.5mph in soybeans. The best way set the concaves was to minimum clearance for beans. That setting provided for the best flow of material through the combine, best sample and with very minimal return. It was a small combine but quite efficient. Thanks for the video. It brings back memories that make me wish I was still farming. I did have to quit for medical reasons but those were the good 'ol days for sure. It sure beat working for corporate America.

Great vid👍I know fella who 1420 with 25ft header, he harvest cereal crops. Our old MF 3342 is Australian special with seconds box, so spit out, if any seed but trashes better quality seed. When seconds box is full, you pull up to the truck, lift up handle on outside combine with old wheat bag n unload, filling it seconds grain, chaff n straw. This combine was made because Australian farmers had strict quality grain policy when delivering to local silos n would be heavy discounted if found non clean sample. This is why MF combines were popular, IH Australian 711 were too.

My uncle had a 1470... not sure if its been sold or not. It sure was a big upgrade from the F2 gleaner and 550 Massey. That old 550 Massey will always have a place in my heart. Spent many of hours asleep behind the seat

I bet there aren't too many that has a Mud Hog kit like this one has, at least I think it's a MUD HOG,,,,, kind of rare I would say. Still sounds great, if someone didn't tell you you would swear it had a 466 turbo in it. Our neighbor had one for about 40 years.

Been running a 1440 for years. Been a real good machine. Maybe I will have a 2300 series someday. Older combines are hard to find in great condition.

Darn good combines. We had a 1420 and 1480 for many years. Used them for corn and soybeans. Very reliable and simple.

We use a John Deere 4420 on our small farm.We hope to be running in the next few days! Can't wait! It's a old machine with only 1200 hours. This year will be bitter sweet cause my 83 year old Dad says this is his last year farming.

We still run a '85 1440 with a 3rd lift cylinder and turbo too. I think it was added by the original owner who we bought it it from.

We run a '79 1460 on our farm. Great machines. I like the looks of these old combines. Seeing them still in use is great!

Heck with classic, these are a common series in many areas. These combines do almost everything the new ones do without the electrical clutter and expense. Great machines!

I do love to see the new stuff that is out their but to see the older stuff is number one to me. Please video more of the old farm equipment.

Oh ya, "electric over hydraulic". Those are the ones you want! I had a 1480 for 5 years, great machine. I figured it cost me $3 per acre in repairs and depreciation. ( not counting fuel and lubricants). I will never beat that......ever.

Grrat video. Thanks for posting. We use a 1420 here in Franklin Illinois. Its a great little workhorse. Very reliable. Some vids of it on my channel.

I hauled around 20 of these around West Australian wheat growing areas, did a few to Sth Aust too, for IH Australia, including the header. had on e to go to Sth Aust over a xmas period, i could only get a oversize permit to the border, SA has a oversize curfew at xmas. met up with another truck to transfer it to. he was going to run the gauntlet into Sth Aust. back then there was nothing much at SA/WA border. a tourist from Melbourne asked what the 1420 was for, so i said don't tell anyone but there is a huge marijuana crop about 40ks inland from here and they're going to use this! he was mortified. the other guy had 4 pilot vehicles with HF radios and police scanners for the 600 ks he had to go. to get around the weigh bridges farmers had bypass roads and charged around $100 for the use, usually done at night. intersting days back then. the farmer that bought that 1420 , his farm had a bumper crop before xmas and that profit paid for 1420. and header, we called them fronts, went by general road freight. Another popular toy was the AcreMaster 404A artic 4x4 tractor, made in Meriden WA. V8 Mercedes around 515HP, a Clark transmission and Raba diff assemblies. i even did did a 4 week demo trip hauling one to SA, Vic and NSW. pretty much bullet proof, built on the KISS system.''lol. all this around circa 1980?

We also had a 1420 very good machine we upgraded a bit to a low hour 1644, also have a very nice 715 that never gets used anymore always sheded.

Dad bought a 1420 new in 1982 then in the fall of 83 dad and my older brother decided to go on the wheat run in 1984 so the traded the 1420 in for two 1480s that was in 1984 and today we run 6 8250s what a machine and the idea all got started with the purchase of a 82 1420.

Great video! I’ve never seen a 1420 IRL, let alone a Rice Special. Interesting that rice ones had heavy wear components. Sad that parts are getting hard to find. Hopefully the 1400 series will be around for another 10 years at small farms.

Hmmm, thats really the kind of thing that a guy needs a parts machine on hand for. I really wish it was still feasible for folks to make a living on the smaller farms with affordable equipment like that, but no, everything must be massive and cost many fortunes to buy. Oh well, maybe things will be different again one day. Thanks for another great video, BTP!!

I am surprised IH bothered to design and build 20" rotor machines. Especially with the 715 already extended a couple years beyond the end of 815/915 waiting for the 1420's development, they could have just kept 715 in the line for another few years into the mid 1980s instead. How much demand could there have been for new class III combines by 1981 anyway? Besides saving development costs, keeping 715 a little longer would also allow them to sell to some customers who wanted to bale longer straw or preferred a conventional combine for whatever other reasons. On the other hand, CaseIH did keep the 1620 in production through 1991, so maybe there was more demand than I'd think. Of course CaseIH didn't have to design and develop it though, all they had to do was keep building it for six more years. Regarding the turbo on this one, I feel doubtful that it was factory since I'd never heard of an OEM turbo 358. And I would think the low volume 1420s would all come with the same diesel engine, or only one engine at a time anyway (CDC 359/5.9L replaced D358 in 1620s in 1989). But I just found out that some European market IH tractors such as models 1246 and 1255 came with turbocharged 358's. So who knows, maybe IH did turbocharge that German diesel on rice special 1420s, especially if there was no rice special 1440.

Ran a 1440 IH on our farm from 2008 right up till 2017 when we upgraded to a 2188 CaseIH. 1440 was a simple machine, not as comfy as the 2188 but definitely simple to run

Those are nice machines! But for now I use a case 660 and case 960 combine to harvest my wheat, oats, and beans in central PA.

The engine doesn't sound like diesel. It sounds like the old Super M. What would be the average bushels per acre with soybeans? It appears it was planted with the 30" row corn planter and as such doesn't appear to be a high yield crop.

You will never harvest any cheaper than with that combine.

These are sweet little machines but there were a few engine failures when these first came out. The inside of the oil pan had been painted and the paint would eventually peel and clog the oil intake. Harvester issued a service warning/recall or whatever you call it that involved removing the oil pan, applying a paint remover to remove the paint and re-installing the oil pan.
