The International Booker-Longlist 2023:
Three titles were in my prediction list:
Standing Heavy by GauZ’, translated by Frank Wynne (MacLehose)

Thank you so much! It would be cool to one day get revelations about how a jury like that picks the books they pick, what external influence they might have from the prize's foundation and of course, the publishing industry. I am still baffled that Fitzcarraldo Editions has 3 titles on the longlist. Certainly good books and a small, relatively new publisher, but shouldn't that be one of the criteria not to "favor" a publisher. OK, they should pick the best books, but they need to take in account so many different aspects like diversity of languages, then diversities of authors, get in "new" languages that never have made the longlist, diversity of topics and variety of publishers.

@@Rainierbooks More transparency on their thinking process would definitely be appreciated. The Nobel prize typically has a diary published in one of the literary magazines but that is mostly process and not actual selection. What are the arguments, why is something considered or not. Fitzcarraldo has a ridiculously good track record historically - it is their prize. The only competitor is Penguin which through imprints actually beat Fitzcarraldo. My suspicion is that Fitzcarraldo has understood the value of International Booker and purposefully submit all their eligilbe books as a way of marketing.
