Happy with the shortlist! Read 7 from the longlist. My favourites thus far have been Not a river and the Details. So pleased the latter made it as it’s quiet book that works its magic and observations very subtly. I’m going to focus on the rest of the shortlist now so I have time to re read a couple closer to the announcement!

I only managed to read Undiscovered before today and I am not surprised that didn't progress as it was quite uneven. I will read Crooked Plow and Not A River in the next couple of weeks. I still want to read Simpatía too.

Kairos & Crooked Plow seem to be the most loved by reviewers. I haven’t read any yet. The Carol Shields prize shortlist is also announced today. 🍀👋☘️🥳📚📖🇮🇪☕️💐

I quite enjoyed The Details, but I would have preferred seeing Lost on Me on the shortlist. I wasn't a fan of Not a River at all and Jenny Erpenbeck deserves the recognition, but in my opinion Kairos is not her strongest work, but maybe her most personal one. Still want to read Undiscovered and White Nights as well as What I'd Rather Not Think About and Crooked Plow.

Great I have pre-ordered Kairos. Interested in East Germany. Stasiland is a great read that has stayed with me many years. I loved the film The Lives of Others.

I was drawn to both Crooked Plow and Kairos when they first came out and they lingered on my TBR and I even put them on hold at the library, but then didn’t get a chance to read them. I guess I have good instincts in picking strong works, now it’s time to circle back and read them.

Read Crooked Plow and The Details, and will read Not a River. Loved The Details while I read it, but it is forgettable. Part One of Crooked Plow dragged, but it picked up.
