Canada is reintroducing a cap on the maximum number of hours international students can work off-campus. Immigration Minister Marc Miller says it was meant to help employers postpandemic - but is no longer needed.
@@bobuxman69yup… highschool students don’t have prior experience & are admittedly often less mature due to their age Many employers figure why take a chance on a highschooler when they already have so many resumes coming in from Adults with prior experience, even if that’s experience from a different country
Supposed every overseas students carry enough fund before coming here, in reality most of them will send the money back to India after arrival , because those money were borrowed from relatives or friends, that’s why they eager to find a job to support the living . Unfortunately our politicians give them a false hope
International student working getting paid , while Canadian student cannot find jobs and have to volunteer, International student is not here to study , they are here too fast track their PR card .
@@LocsLoco how many ppl want to be a cashier at the gas station in the middle of the night? This is the type of work they are doing, not a nice cushy job.
Higher demand for labor would have raised wages that would have incentivized Canadians take on those same jobs that international students are taking. But wages are depressed and unattractive because of international students
International students are strictly here for education and not for work in any way or form. Our own Canadian born students should be the only ones working here. Common sense should be the order of the day.
They should NOT be working AT ALL. If you can’t afford to fund your entire education, accommodation, food, etc. you SHOULD NOT be here. Enough. This needs to stop NOW.
I think the problem is that costs have gone up so fast here in Canada. They probably did have enough money when they started their studies, then rent doubled, food costs doubled, etc.
I was once a foreign student here. I didn’t work a single day while in university and fully committed to my study. I graduated from my 4-year program in 3.5 years. I am extremely lucky that I have a financially supportive family to back my study. And I can tell you, in 3.5 years I spent $200K just for tuition and rent. I am grateful for my education because it sets me up for a good start in my career. But can the universities stop running like they are corporations? In the year I graduated, 30% of my university’s revenue came from tuitions charged on international students. Without us I am certain that a lot of universities in Canada would go bankrupt. This is not a sustainable model and it is hurting the young generation in general.
That is what true Canadians has been pointing out for years now. International students is a money making scheme, while destroying the country in the process, vote out the liberals!
You kind of wonder how students can study with all the work they do. As for money, they were expected to have enough money. Stop foreign students from taking jobs from Canadians.
@@alexrubin5955 Must be something in the economic print that I am not seeing and in the employment numbers. The government is hitting breaks on several areas.
My teenaged daughter and son cannot get work at a McDonalds now because 33-year-old Sarjim from India has taken the job, when he shouldn't even be working. Why are we making universities rich while we pay the price?
That means your teen son and daughter have worse customer service skills than the Indian man LOL!!! Wow what BS story you trolls come up with. Hilarious!!
to say frankly international students also paying the price for high cost of living, 1 cashier job at lcbo attracted 1000 or mire students competing, many businesses taking advantage and paying them 6$ an hr, however they wont pay taxes but being exploited
Most are owned by Indians. Why don’t mention that too. Mc donalds, tim hortons, burger king, subway you name it and not to mention hotel and motel chains
Being an international student was another way for a migrant to get into the country ahead of others who are waiting in line. We don't have the housing/jobs for international students who were supposed to have the money to live here without needing a job. That was the criteria of being an international student. If they can't afford it they can drop out and go home. Going to college here doesn't mean you'll succeed or are owed a place here. Afterall, only 41% of Canadian students graduate from collage, the rest flunk out. The international students are not owed anything from Canada.
There is nothing wrong with working extra hours to supplement your savings to meet expenses such as tuition, rent&food. It's a smart idea. Most of the jobs filled are minimum wage positions that white Canadians are just to lazy to apply & work for. Most employers are grateful to students for filling a void and alleviating disruptions at work because of a lack of manpower. I think your confused what the criteria is for being an international student. No where does it say you can't work while going to school. At least now the Liberals have defined how much one can work. The housing crisis is not caused by students. It's caused by greedy landlords, foreign speculators & the Liberal government for not intervening & creating affordable housing. If international students arrive here just to qualify for PR status. It's good because the law says there is nothing wrong with that. You need to take ur medication
@@deepakbhana8937 You do know that international students aren’t citizens right ? They aren’t permitted extra hours to work. International students are in fact taking up resources and taking jobs traditionally meant for teenagers. International students place pressures on the housing market , you see Asians and Indians literally over capacity sharing small apartments.
@@MelaniaRose You don't even realize, that your statement is bordering close to being racist as such. However, after thinking about what you shared on this platform, you may be partially right. I would like to add. India's caste system which brings a source of false pseudo egoistic pride is equally or more damaging than what you shared on this platform. There is no way that I.S. are a threat to the lifestyle that war veterans fought for & had a dream how life could be better for future generations. If you want to be realistic, I was taught each successive wave of immigrants with a few exceptions encountered racist tendencies that you have shared, even though you don't realize that you did so. I was taught that the Irish immigrants of the past were treated like dogs (google this) yet look at the pride & success they have achieved today. Maybe you are alone, can't think of a way to responsibly think of a way for financial independence or were left in vulnerable ways(your parents expected you to find your way thru the forest) were your mind was deeply agitated & your response was unrealistic. Such as reading or hearing responses to I.S. apparent experiences of success. Maybe you are 5.7 & shorter and are envious of taller international students who look as handsome & prettier than your forefathers. If that's the case why did your forefathers embrace discriminate & then soon embrace wave upon wave of Italian immigrants who I belive practice a form of lesser casteism. Certain muslim immigrants are treated like some boat people (Vietnamese) & Chinese immigrants. Their children look like angels. As a result some of there communities are granted direct & financially supported entry into your country. Did you ever consider & sympathize with African immigrants stumbling blocks to live & lead a better life. At the end of the day, if you practice some reflections of what is right & wrong, you may believe your trials & tribulations can be easily overcome. Also you may need help like sisterhood provides. Also drink a glass of warm milk before you go to bed at night. It will help you sleep better.
@@MelaniaRose How dare you blame International Students For Canada's housing market's problems. The real culprit, in my opinion is a combination of factors. Among other things, wealthy landowners are being unrealistic in there quest to generate more passive wealth. Once upon a time Irish immigrants were denied entry into certain restraunts (no Irish dogs are welcome). Now look at the success & pride of the Irish. International Students percieved to be treated less harshly will be successful & have an obligation to look after racist thinking individuals(you don't think you are one) in the future if not now.War vetrans fought for & had a dream how future generations would lead better lives compared to theres
International students should not be working here. There is no easy way to keep tabs on the hours they work and can easily overcome that by having multiple employers. We have to take care of our first.
@@logomoko78 It's "Goncalves" not "GOLCALVES" And I'm referring to the people who we stole the land from - the indigenous and left destitute. The last name is Portuguese, not Spanish or Mexican - you know, the same people who Conquered most of the planet and assimilated well with the Indigenous, in what is known today as modern day Brazil.
I've gone to a soup kitchen everyday for over half a decade. Over the last couple years we've gotten a lot of new people coming. What these students do is, one will do their mandatory volunteer hours for school there and see the free food. They then tell all the international students and m1grants they know about it, they even make Facebook groups and everyone invites everyone person they know and they explain how to get this food. The food is for Canada's most vulnerable. Poor pensioners, people on disability, the mentally ill and homeless. At one point, the soup kitchen had as many international students eating each day as there were native and native-born Canadians. Two hundred of them. A total of four hundred average daily people. It was causing the place to give half the portions they usually served in order to cover every person who showed up, and to overly rely on rice and pasta (heavy carb loading) instead of meat as the main course. Meaning, it wasn't just the calories we were missing, it was the vitamins and nutrients and proteins we need to be healthy. These people all had brand new name brand phones, expensive cars, fancy watches. They all were well fed and had the means to eat without having to go to a soup kitchen. I talked to some. They all come from wealth and many even have servants back home. It got so bad the very generous and charitable Christians had to tell them to stop coming. Many still come. There's more details I could add, but you get the point. They are exploiting our sense of openness and kindness. Why come here to just be selfish and take from our most vulnerable people?
Really why weren’t they hired? I am curious to know. You should train them better to be competitive. Blaming others won’t help him/her for a better live.
are you kidding me? in the US, international students are not allowed to work even part-time because they are students, and they should be able to cover their whole expenses without working.
They should have absolutely no right to work. They must be self sufficient or study at home. Canadians should not have to compete for jobs or a place to live with foreign students.
Bring it down to 16 hours maximum, this is normal all across the world, international students bring money so they should not be allowed to work at all.
isnt it canada goal to become immgrants country ?...if it is only for study ...nobody want to study there buddy ...guess who would waste their money for educational purpose
During my time, we could only work 20 hours per week on campus. For off-campus work, we had to obtain an off-campus work permit, which cost around $150. We were eligible to apply only after almost two semesters. Once the off-campus work permit was approved, we could work off-campus. The 20-hour limit applied to total work hours, whether on campus, off campus, or in combination.
theres a tons load of students in Btown working more than 40hours a week..... they need to uplift the workpermits as well.... restrict the number of students that qualify for those permits.
"any services to them"!!! how about police, health cares, social services, child cares, municipal services like snow and garbage removal, public librairies and so many others including fresh air and water, justice services name it!!!!!
@@davidjobin2013 not really our problem If I can’t afford to send my kid to the US for school I won’t If I am investing that kind of money they are studying not working .
@@jgalt5002 well Canada charges 10 times the fees compared to domestic . Also international students are charged taxes and given no services making sure every penny goes to Canadians. There has to be a mutual benefit . International students who comes are usually more educated , smart and hard working than the domestic ones. And ya it’s your problem because they are carrying the money as per govt regulations any thing up and beyond is governments responsibilities.
My own kid who is native wonders why she can’t get a job!!🤬🤬🤬 But on the other hand the government is using these international kids as slaves because I’m sure they’re not getting minimum wage This corrupt government has to stop
Appeasement politics in action! No regard for the real Canadians , their children and grandchildren. What is happening to the students and temporary workers whose study /work period is over? And what about the 20% of students who came to Canada but did not attend classes? Why the minister is not talking about people who are breaking the law? How can they remain in Canada? This happens only in Canada!!
That's a good point; students should need to meet attendance requirements; some of my University courses required attendance (they would have a quiz at the start of each 8 a.m. class that basically penalized anyone who arrived late to class).
International Students are expected to have the financial means to cover them during their duration of their studies. Some are given grants/scholarships, and the others pay out of pocket. I don't expect another country to allow me to work and to pay me, while I attend Their school, *_after I Accepted and Agreed to_* the enrollment and ALL finances that came with it. International Students are here as Students... If they cannot afford to attend school, pay their own room and board... they shouldn't be here. Just as it is in their home country, we'd be International students, paying tuition, room and board... NOT allowed to have employment.
If they can afford paying 3 times more tuition fee (comparing local Canadian pay), they can afford the living in Canada , 20 hours cap is making sense.
Dont compare domestic students to foreign lol. They wanted to come here and should have the money for it not come here and take up a teenagers job. You wouldnt go to school in germany without the financial stability so what's the difference.
As someone who worked part-time while attending University, I don't see how they could do well at school while working 40+ hours per week. That just sounds like a work permit masquerading as a study permit.
They mostly come from Bangladesh on a student visa or visitors visa and then seek asylum. If Immigration Canada goes to Danforth Avenue in Scarborough, Ontatio they will find them working illegally or have filed for asylum. They get money from welfare and food from mosques and food bank. They live off the tax payers money.
Look at their manners. They throw trash on the road, spit on the streets, talk loud, assemble in group, advice each other on how to bring more people. I have been told that they live in rooms with 6 to 8 people. They are happy with the money they get from welfare.
Why dont you restrict the amount of food they can take from food banks so Canadians can actually use these assistive measures themselves? Our tax dollars are paying for them to be here and they are robbing the system
Theres too many of them taking jobs from actual Canadians. I applied for a camera position i was heavily qualified for. Over a decade and a half in experience. I lost the job to an international student. I met him spoke to the guy face to face because he was in the same program i was in for school. He knew nothing about camera work or how to do anything related to the job. Now while he gets $22/hour I settle for $15/hour because its all i can find. While you help these international students, there are real working Canadians who are hurting.
Should be capped at 24hrs/week. Idmf they are to study here they should rely on their families before coming here. After all Sweden still has free college lvl studies for free. Them coming here without enough to support them is B.S Better and more restrictions following this year should be set in place. These students also knock out LOCAL students from their studies.
As an international student now I understand why the locals don't like us International students that much. We are required to show enough fund for our study and our stay. But in the break time we are having the Liberty to work as much as we want. So why do you guys want to work more than 30 hours or 20 hours in the study time?? You guys are here to study not to work.
I understand the 15-20h for extra spending money and building connection like most Canadian students but after that your not a student. your a foreign worker
you cap or not they are already working 4 jobs unoficially lots of youtube videos each student working many jobs taking cash nit paying taxes ate thank you sir 🙏
Student should not be working at all! And they should go back home after studying… we need tighter laws Canada is in Crisis right now and this Student are leeching on to jobs that are supposed to be given to struggling Canadian, PR and Temporary Workers.
In USA F1, F4 visa can't work outside of Campus. I don't understand why Canadian can't have teenager jobs. Think about the long term if teenagers can't have jobs they going to fall into dark side like OF do we really want those?
Did they came here to work or to study? I don't really understand. How are Universities admitting these people without making sure they can finance their education. This country sucks!
because universities are businesses and they want customers who pay the highest prices. look at how high international student tuitions are, you will see why.
Dude I knew some Indian guy and he was working like 40 hours a week and I he was like "I'm a student" and i was no you're a fricken brown guy and need to leave back to India
Good job, Minister. Now I see the factors of planning in action. I also recommend some procedural changes to be applied to international students with respect to their permanent residency and citizenship.
They were here in a student visa to study not to work primarily period. If they could not afford, they could go back to their country to study and it will be cheaper.
These ethnic groups are hiring their own people with influence and connections hence it’s virtually impossible to find employment for younger budding ones. What happened to the good old multiculturalism our core values as a society. Are we supposed to send our children to find work in India now 🙄
They can study by taking shifts as a security guard so they can do their studies and do shift work simultaneously. They should let them work low key security shifts to help pay for their education.
I would put a cap on the number of international students. Only those studying for a masters or PhD in a discipline that is Ben to Canada should be admitted. Even then, in students must not occupy more than 10% of places in graduate studies programs. No international students in college level programs. Most are not real students. They are here to work and somehow get OR. They take jobs away from Canadian st and those with low incomes. Fore students must be prohibited from working more than 12 hours a week and must be prohibited from using food banks and other charities that serve poor Canadians.
