I starting a pretty cool fish wood carving project only IM NOT DOING THE ACTUAL CARVING. This is Part 1 and I'll be airbrushing the base colors on getting it ready for hours of hand painting details.
A while back I became acquainted with a man named Vagn Ingólfsson in a wood carving group on Facebook. Vagn lives in Iceland and is the one that did the actual carving. It is an Atlantic Salmon that is 102 cm long.(40 inches for us Americans)
I think He did an amazing job but what is even more amazing is this was his first carving and it was all done by hand without power tools!
He had watched one of my RU-vid videos on how I make my own fish scale burning tips and one day He messaged me and asked if I could make some tips for him because he couldn’t find any he was happy with. So I made him some and sent them to him. Not long after he finished burning the scales on the carving he messaged me and asked if I would paint it for him!
I initially turned him down but after a little persistence from him and one of his friends, a man by the name of Bergþór Jóh who also lives in Iceland and he also happens to also speak English and has been translating conversations between Vagn and I.
So after thinking about it for a couple weeks I finally decided it would be a unique opportunity to help a new friend from another country and possibly get a little more experience painting a species Ive never painted and maybe even get some exposure abroad. So I finally decided I would do it.
He shipped the carving last week and it was held up in customs here in the US for a couple days because they didn’t know what kind of wood it was, there were also a couple other technicalities that I was able to get straightened out and they finally released it and it still ended up arriving a day early.
I’ll feel pretty confident it should turn out good and I’ll be posting videos of the painting process and progress here on Danny Harris Arts. I Hope you’ll check it out and maybe share the link and subscribe to the channel while you’re here and be sure to hit the thumbs up to get notices for part 2

Nice job, Danny! I saw a short of yours where you were doing the tipping on this project. It looks like it took forever.. You are so patient and careful in your work. I think that is why the guy asked you to do the painting. I am working on a 30-inch rainbow that will be a sign for a friend. I don't really need to worry about the details, such as scales and tipping, but I've watched you and another guy on RU-vid, and I am ruined! I have to do the details. At least I have good teachers! I've never done airbrushing before, so it is likely to be an adventure!

Thanks, scale tipping to me brings it to life. This one took me around 40 hours. I just finished a 17 in rainbow on my last project. I’ll have part two on this project hopefully mid week next week That’ll be mostly scale tipping and a few small details and final clear coating. But I go into more detail how I’m doing it. Air brushing takes a little getting used to. Not only spray control but getting proper paint consistency and dealing with the small quirky issues that are inherent with using a airbrush. I’ve got a video on making DYI paint reducer that may help if you don’t already have some

It definitely was the most time consuming part of the process.

@@Danny_Harris-Arts I still have the scaling to do. Luckily, it’s only on one side.

He used a wood burner (only power tool he used) with scale shaped tips that I make. He used 3 different sizes. You can buy commercially made scale tips but they are basically generic scale shapes. Every species that has scales have slightly different shapes. Even on an individual fish they have different sizes and slightly different shapes on various areas of the body. I have a video here that shows how I made the tips and other videos where I show how to burn scales on all my fish wood carving projects.
