Andre, I always wanted to ask you! So 33 years after you wrote "Do me baby " and prince released it. What would of happen if in 82' if you released your version of the song? I know prince isn't going to beat you up, he wouldn't of sued you, because he would of lost, because so many people knew it was your song. Is it just hindsight now, can't go back? And what did prince put on the song? Keyboards maybe? Did you write all the lyrics? I don't understand why prince couldn't share credit as co/writer, if he changed an instrument from the original. I love the base in the beginning, is that your riff (written)? I love the song, and he did a great job in 1.82 NJ, although he didn't play anything on that song that night. Did you see that concert? I enjoyed this conversation. You know what would be cool? If Andre was a host on Purple Current and allowed to just do his thing. Play whatever he wanted. Interview whoever he wanted. I think he would curate some really interesting content and it would liven things up a bit. Purple Current should be allowed to evolve.
I love Andre- he is so talented- honestly equally talented as Prince. The unfortunate part is he didn't protect himself back in the day and his friend Prince (who i love) took advantage of it. Andre had Prince's back, it sounds like no one had Andres- Even in this interview you can hear Andre stopping himself for being absolutely honest because he's still trying to respect the legend of Prince.. I was 19 back in 1981 and EYE actually did see Andre Cymone and Dez Dickerson in the touring band...That band was hands down the best band Prince ever had...It's a crying shame he didn't have that band for Purple Rain...A Waaaaaaaaaay better band...I saw Prince 5 more times after that...1999 was the last tour I saw Prince on-BEFORE Purple Rain...Andre is THE TRUTH.
The current should have interviewed somebody else like Dez Dickerson, Brownmark, or Lisa Coleman cuz Andre had already left when Controversy had first came out and was looking for a record deal for his debut LP " Livin in the New Wave".
Andre wrote or co-wrote quite a few: A. Do me baby B. Let’s work Bassline C Controvery And a few others. Just like Morris wrote party up etc To me though and this is Jmo, Andre was too nice and laid back business wise twords Prince. Just like he refused to get paid for a year or so, but failed to think about the fact that Prince was getting paid. One more thing . Prince, should have sent Andrew a check for five million dollars after the sales for controversy were tallied along with the first album.. Oh yea didn’t know?? A lot of the bass playing even on the first one is none other than Andre Cymone he is also a musical genius. Maybe not on Prince level but still cold in his own right.
I see a lot of haters and Prince(Fanboys/girls) with negative comments which doesn’t make those comments facts. Morris, Jesse, Jam & Lewis, Lisa and Gail have all collaborated most of what he’s saying. Prince was petty and controlling and fighting the music industry machine he may have thought that was needed. As for Andre he’s also is a multi instrumentalist and writer. Problem is he chose to distance himself from the sound he helped create when he left choosing New Wave & Futuristic which the all black audience Prince had before 1999 and PRain weren’t buying. Real artistic cats don’t want to be clones. O’Bryan basically quit because they wanted him to be more like Prince. Groups were doing it(see: The Deele, the Bar-Kay’s morphed into it) Georgio was an absolute mark. But Rick James and others stood on who they were. Andre Anderson made a choice. And he’s cool with it. He and Jody did very well. He made his music whether you like it or not and IS STILL ALIVE TO TALK ABOUT IT and make more.

Absolutely right. It's like he's intentionally keeping everything to himself he knows people want to hear. A lot of nothing being shared here on purpose. Probably out of jealousy or resentment of living his life in Prince's shadow. Even after he dies, people only want to hear about Prince. I know I do.

He had a album that was black with him in like a ninja outfit it had a few cuts that I still have on a old blackberry that I have so much music on I love the song that was hard bad and piano pretty wild girl awww man that was the jam I remember having sex on this one mood light going on in the room the burning inscents and a bottle of the long neck Cani wine 🍷 Things were so much simpler then .I hope he is doing great and thanks for all your music contributions great music never go away it has lifetime staying power
Wow sounds like Andre wrote and conceived of the Prince sound and then just gave it to him and then just starting writing songs for himself. Just wonder why his songs after gifting those early one, don't touch me like the work he gave Prince.
