I catch up with my cowboy brother, who is now ranching in Nevada. On the way out to the ranch, he educates me on the buckaroo style of cowboying, then I get to see it in action.

EDIT: If you've arrived here from Buckaroo Guide, be sure to tell Brenda I said thanks for the views :) then make sure you read my comment below. For some reason she and others got the idea that my brother is disrespecting other styles of cowboy in this video. I honestly have no idea how anyone could say that. If you watch and pay attention to the entire video, there's just no logical way you could come away thinking he's insulting or insinuating he's better than anyone. His kindness and openness shines through in his thoughtful answers to my questions. "There's guys in every style that have great horses and they're great hands, you know. It's just a different style, different way of doing things. I don't think it's wise to knock anything different, so long as you can see the results are getting the job done well and efficiently, you know, without costing horses or cattle or people & their well being." It honestly baffles me how a few people who hate my brother for whatever reason are determined to interpret this video that thousands of others enjoy as something it's absolutely not. If you still don't get it, read my original comment, then go watch my video on bullying. Then go and make the internet a nicer place. ORIGINAL COMMENT: It saddens me that I have to post something like this. If it’s not obvious, my projects involving my brother are as close to my heart as anything can be. My family has weathered some tough times, and our love for each other is fierce and protective. These projects are meant to be fun and heartfelt glimpses into the life of a man who lives in a world most of us only see in movies. I work hard to showcase his knowledge, skill, and heart. These films are a love letter to the wild and vibrant culture of ranching. Those of you who follow my work know that my roots are planted firmly in the heartland of America; stories of farmers and ranchers are some of those I love to tell the most. Most people get that. Most people understand that this is just one perspective, and don’t somehow feel insulted or threatened by watching a piece of my brother’s story. In the video, he states that none of his opinions are absolute, and it’s never wise to knock something just because it’s different or something you don’t fully understand. Some people don’t get that, and for reasons I don’t understand, feel led to rudely express unwanted opinions. Someone did this earlier today. His initial comment was profanity and insults, and implications that my brother’s not a “real” cowboy. I chose to respond rather than delete his comment right away, because sometimes you need to stand up to the bullies and let them know that they don’t get to own your space just because they’re loud and rude. But after a while I remembered that some of my biggest fans are or have been my wife’s 4th grade students. They love these videos and I don’t want the first thing they see to be curse words, so I deleted the comments and blocked the user. It goes beyond that for me, though. I’ve never cared about producing videos just to get followers or likes. These videos are my stories, this channel is my living room, where you’re invited in to share in my journey. I love interacting with you and sharing my work with you. I care too much about this and all of you to let mean people have a presence here. My channel will always be a place of positivity, fun, and uplifting stories. If you can’t honor that, your comments will be deleted. It’s about valuing kindness. If you don’t, you won’t have a voice on my channel.

We've known and worked with Elijah for a year and a half now and he is good at what he does! He's very capable at riding, roping, doctoring, branding and is a talented gear maker. He's got a good eye for detail and figuring things out. Above all, he's respectful and kind and has a heart of gold. These latter attributes are far more important than the first, but he's a class act and well rounded in all of them. An all around good man!

The California Vaquero or in it's mispronounce buckaroo originated Baja California sur. Due to their isolation they develop different working styles and different wear. The most representative thing other than the saddle and rope was la cuera or leader jacket made of cow skin or deerskin as well as the Hat made of the same material. My family vaquero history goes way back in Spanish Mexico and I always love seeing the way that people practice this beautiful tradition.

@@spurrit you must be no more than 10 yro to snap like that without giving us all the honour to read your wise words of enlightenment. I bet my horses you're the one full of shit! That reaction of yours is typical in those who cannot take being schooled by those they consider illegible to do so...too bad, just take it. The mispronounciation part makes sense. As far as vaquero and bukaroo go, in Spain it's common to pronounce the "v" at the begining of a word just as a "b" sounds (unless you come from the Valladolid area, where the pronounciation is distinctly clear). So americans would hear baquero and end up saying bukaroo, makes sense. Many american words are simply mispronounced Spanish words from South America after the Spanish invasion and conquest of the land ( I don't think I need to explain to you that S. Amercia has nothing to do with the geographical location of Spain...or maybe I do...well you do your research...). You probably use stuff like the "bosal" and have no clue where the hell the word comes from, I won't charge you for schooling you , kid. It comes from the Spanish "bozal", pronounced "bothal" and simply means a muzzle....the type you put on a horse to stop him from eating or on a dog so it does not bite. S. Amercians kept the same word from their Spanish conquerors as far as horse gear was concerned, for what you guys call a bosal now. The correct word for that whole head stall in Spanish is ronzal, cabezada, cabezón, all words for just another type of bitless riding gear. Latigo is a whip, not the tail end of your girth strap. The S. Amercians ended up calling any leather strap a "latigo", cos whips used on people could be a leather strap and not just the bullwhip for cattle, it's easy to forget how savage invaders are with those whom they invade. Read about what would happen to natives if the conquering Spaniards found any with a bridle. The term "caballero" is horseman as in cavalry man, or gentleman. In those days it was a title as well as being a cavalryman, so nobody "undeserving" would be allowed to even ride a horse...death penalty. Do we need to go on with the term "cowboy"? You only need to know that in its origin in the English the americans spoke out there, it was a derogatory reference to the people who herded cows for the Spanish conquerors (natives of S. America, black slaves from Brazil imported by Portugal, mixes of black and white, giving mulato and mixes of white and native giving mestizo). So you first need to know what a vaquero is in Spanish, not at all derogatory in our country or form of speech. You also need to know that Spanish people landed in the carib. Isls. in 1492 and in Mexico 1521, so in the latter about 100 years before the English started sending their long term convicts to usa (Virginia mainly) in order to empty their crammed prisons......and about 300 years before the mass migration of starving Irish people (catholics) who had little choice after the devastated potatoe crops, to live under the yoke of the English landlords in Ireland or take their chances in america. There is more to history than mere words or names of objects, always interesting, often cruel and harsh, but still necessary to know.

Joe-I read your comment on the way others have talked down your brother. I think it's a real sad deal. To me he was very honest in his feelings but was also very humble and not critical of others. He really showed a great deal of respect. Please tell him, and I really hope you do, I really loved watching him handle his rope. I'd love to rope and ride as well as he does. Shake his hand for me and tell him well said Pard. It would be a pleasure to do so myself! God bless and Merry Christmas to a new internet Pard.

As for the negative comments I was told by my elders long a go if you didn’t have something good to say then do say it , they are elders for a reason , so show some respect whither you agree or just plain don’t like it !

Thank you Mr. Patterson for this video. There are a lot of young men like your brother out there that a lot of these key board warriors will never get the privilege to meet. If you do get a chance, let him know that not all Okies wear bell chaps and tie off ha ha, I've been a dally man my whole life and worked around some great punchers , so far I can say that I haven't been corrupted. I may be the exception to the rule around these parts ha ha. It is fun to see the looks you get when you trot out packing a 60ft rope. Happy trails!

Not one open mouth avoiding the bit, nor throwed head, maybe just one small hint of objecting nose, from either horse with a spade bit. The horses look comfortable. Perfect video for bit-haters, or ignorant folks trying to use a spade bit too soon. I'm very green, don't know much, but it seems that any horse that feels the need to gape their mouth open has a handler not doing it right. Right?

This dude is wearing a Californio Mexican hat. I didn't know people still wear those. Californios went extinct with the massive migration during the gold fever that open the path to urbanization.

You mean baja california hat?mexican hat
@eliorocha10
@eliorocha10 4 года назад
@@eloymorales1140 No, I mean a Californio. Californio Mexican Vaqueros from Alta California before the anglo stole and took over the land. Californios had their own type of vaquero culture of their own like the Northeast Mexican Vaquero from Chihuahua (that the American Texan Cowboy came from) or the Charro from central Mexico. Californios wore these type of long flat sombreros different than the Northeast Vaquero or the Charro. The type of sombrero was one of the many things that will distinguish them apart.

We use to call them "telephone tough guys" in the 70's. Someone who was tough as long as they didn't have to go face to face with someone. Usually the TTG would melt away when having to face someone. Seems only the technology has changed, the jerks still exist.

I prefer to have the signaling on the face not in the mouth. I get smooth responses to my cues. I think it is better for the horse.

So does my brother. The boots he put on early in the video were for doing chores before the branding.
