When I began birth work 20 years ago I had a feeling that we could transform the world by starting with birth. While I still believe this, and have a little more research to back-up those claims now than I did 20 years ago, I have to admit I've been blow away reading The Nurture Revolution by Greer Kirshenbaum, PhD. A neuroscientist, doula, infant and family sleep specialist, Greer attended a doula training with the Doula School many years ago and I was so thrilled to see her new book come up that I knew I wanted to sit down and chat with her for all of you to learn from. BUT I will say that the book has blow me away, which takes a lot after 20 years of reading and reading and reading and reading about pregnancy, birth and early parenting.
I hope you enjoy this video that briefly goes over the main concepts in the book. Having the research on how we can best support our babies isn't new. But having in a really easy to understand and implement way is much less common. Greer does an amazing job of summarizing how baby brain development happens, and more importantly how parents and support people can foster the BEST brain development in babies. Spoiler alert, its by nurturing.
We'll share some of the research to be found in the book and how as birth workers we can support parents to do what they are biologically programmed to do: nurture.
