Interview with John Hutchinson on the Concorde (Part 1)

Capt.Hutchinson is one of the most entertaining and intelligent individuals I have ever had the pleasure of listening to with respect to aviation. An absolutely brilliant individual who epitomizes a Concorde Captain. I thank him for his contribution to aviation and wish him the best in his retirement!

I without doubt could listen to Capt Hutchinson all day.

I really appreciate Mr Hutchinson's way of telling a story.

I flew Concord with him subsonic from JFK to London in 1984. We took off three times and could not go supersonic because of a fuel door problem and had to dump fuel and return to jfk. They tried to fix at JFK but could not two times. Most of the other passengers got off and flew to London first class for free after the second landing. I staid on board with about six other passengers when they said they had to fly subsonic to have the door fixed in London. The flight took over 8 hours and because there was no entertainment on board other than booze the pilot let each of the remaining passengers sit in the cockpit for about an hour. Did not have to pay going to London. Flew back with same pilot 3 hours and 30 minutes. Great memories

Myself and the wife were laughing our heads off at the comment 'once all of the passengers joined you in the cockpit' - re engine surge problem. Then to find out every last drop of alcohol had been consumed by the passengers was brilliant. Loved the description from John Hutchinson.

fascinating guy. There are Concorde take-off videos with him as Captain back in 1989 where he's a much younger man. What a rewarding life he's had being able to do what he loved and get paid well for it. Can't imagine what it would be like to say "my grandpa is a retired Concorde pilot". He's still very sharp in this interview and loves talking about the Concorde.

Why am I enjoying listening to him despite the fact that some of the technicalities are somewhat beyond me...? Not only is he interesting but his love of the aircraft is infectious.

I could listen to John talk all day long. Amazing to hear his passion for the airplane and his adventures. Really hope that one day they develop a replacement. Concorde is a gem in human achievement.

He is intoxicating to the ear and his delivery of the narrative is so natural and engaging. The F4 pilot Chris Bolton (apologies if I'm mistaken with the name) also had a very natural delivery and was very much the RAF maverick. John is the gentleman's maverick in terms of commercial pilot. A wonderful interview indeed.

I can´t tell how much I have enjoyed listening and watching this. The right man to fly that beautiful aircraft and definitely the right one to tell stories about it!

What a fantastic gentleman he is. Such terrific recollections, and so detailed too. He's one of those people you wish to meet. Superb video thanks for sharing. Great stories of a wonderful aircraft. Loved the bit about keeping cabin door open so passengers could come up to chat to the pilots. Long gone those days thanks to a certain group of maniacs!

He's fantastic and so is his wife. I had the Great pleasure of talking to her last year at the de havilland aircraft museum in st albans.

To say he is a legend is something of an understatement. A true gent, with amazing knowledge, stories, and experiences.

If I was the interviewer, I would not have been able to keep a straight face at his stories! I laughed out loud at several instances where the interviewer kept silent. Well done!

The last anecdote had me in stitches.

Brilliant video I have been to see that Concorde and I agree it is a beautiful aircraft

I never had the chance to actually fly on a Concorde. It is a beautiful plane. I love Terry Pratchett's description of it "It's like a shape piece of sky". I have looked around the one at Duxford and once had a tour around the hangers at Heathrow where I went on board many planes including a BA Concorde that was being serviced. The cockpit is tiny! There was a gantry around the plane which we walked around and I looked straight into the visor and then was able to hold the tip of the nose of the beast. That was a moment I shall never forget - I held the nose of a real in-service Concorde!

Enthralling and fascinating as always. What a magnificent gentleman.

I saw him on a documentary from The Smithsonian Channel about the development, management and decommission of Concorde . He always has something interesting to describe every time he talks about his career while flying the speedbird. He gets emotional just remembering his years in the cockpits of Concorde and, if anyone wants to get familiar with this former SST all you need to do is listen to this gentleman. He is indeed one of the few lucky people to have master the skills required to pilot that beautiful machine. Only he knows what it is like to submit your body to speeds higher than a bullet for hours on, day after day , year after year . I pretty sure he misses those powerful engines under his command.

John Hutchison definitely flew a Concorde over my house when I was a boy, and I definitely ran to the window when he did so.

I"m a yank but credit where it's due... the English invented the first jet airliner in the world. That's really something. I'm sure they made other inventions or innovations in aviation too. For some reason people don't usually seem to think of "English engineering" as being a thing, if you will... But I do, anyway. Thanks for the video.

Wow I can’t believe he actually was born and grew up in India! :O

Capt. Hutchinson truly sparks passion about aviation, particularly, in my opinion, about the most remarkable commercial aviation achievement: the Concorde. Given the state of aviation technology, including significantly more efficient and powerful engines, the ability to almost eliminate sonic boom (research quite spike), all those Concorde blueprints should be translated into a next gen supersonic aircraft. Passengers would pay the fare to get to Europe in 3 hrs, or less!

Living in Cape Town South Africa as a kid in the 60's I got to know the distinct engine noises of Shackeltons and North American Harvards.....amongst many others.They flew over our home at 200 meters on their approach to Ysterplaat AFB......

The captain's stories support what I've believed for a long, long time. People who are passionate about a subject can talk about it and make it quite interesting. I had my first airplane ride sometime around 1953, in a Piper Super Cub. There must be an invisible "flying virus" that infects people and never goes away. It's common for commercial pilots (maybe ALL pilots) to catch that "virus" at an early age.

What an amazing gentleman sharp smart great memory I saw a concord fly right over my house in 1975/6 I live in dunstable and in the next town Luton is the airport I know concord never landed in Luton so all I can say is it must have used Luton radar and guidance but I remember seeing her at around 4,000 feet and climbing boy what a site that was,

such a beautiful aircraft was fortune enough to see her at the new york mesuem

No pilots ever called A380 a gentlemen airplane..that's why 747 will out lived A380s..mark my word. Love to watch this video though..it is really pleasure to watch someone who actually have a ton of experience than those who have not as many as him but making so many youtube vid about flying.
