As a kid my parents were very frugal. I was an adult before I owned a Schwinn. My obsession has lead to owning over 30 Schwinn bicycles. Four of them are Paramounts. Thanks Richard for the fun and memories!

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage John, only exceed in numbers. Your collection is top drawer. My collection is lucky finds and bikes saved from decay. All have been restored to riding condition. Some are original and some are “resto-mod”. One of my best riding bikes is an old 1988 Cimarron. It is mostly original excluding the handlebars. They have been replaced by upright bars. Enjoy your videos immensely. Absolutely love your collection!

Thanks for the shoutout, John. You are spot-on with your insight regarding Richard as being much more than the inheritor of a legacy based on his name alone. Trek and Cannondale built bikes in the USA for many years but went with offshore manufacturing years ago. Richard and Waterford did something no one else did: they stood by their tried and true material, steel, and kept manufacturing at home. That puts them in a league of their own. It has been great getting to know Richard and becoming his partner in restorations, touch-ups, and paint fulfillment.

I had the good fortune of being the contract pinstriper for Richard and Waterford the last several years. It was a thrill for me to go to the factory to add some embellishments or to personalize a bicycle with a name or a saying that would ensure that that was a unique bicycle. For me to 'stripe on Roger's impeccable paint jobs was a privilege. And to work on the restored Paramounts was a very emotional experience. How lucky I was to have a great relationship with the Waterford team and their frames!

I met Richard Schwinn at the San Diego Handmade Bike Show years ago if memory serves. For a guy with his last name I was surprised at how approachable he was and not super opinionated by decades of I've seen it all. I'm very excited that they are continuing a line of decals...shows that he understands the bicycle collector. Best wishes in retirement Richard, you certainly earned it. Thanks for the video John.

From the shop in GR Michigan to my LeTour 3, to the Davidson Impulse, to the dream build WF 2200 Lugged track bike in Chameleon Green, Richard’s contribution is a through line. Really, thank you sir.

Great interview,,, we couldn’t afford a bicycle in the old country but as soon as we arrived here in the 70’s. I bought Schwinn stingray krate pea picker and delivered newspapers. Banana seat , avocado green, top tube stick shifter. The bicycle bug bit me and never left cycling. Thank you Mr Richard for great bikes over the years , paramount, Chicago, Madison, prologue and the list goes on and on and on and on………life is short ,,, enjoy the ride….

Loved the interview with a true American icon! I was 12 years old in1963 when my parents bought me a brand new schwinn for Christmas. I rode that bike everywhere until I turned 17 and bought my first used car. That bike ignited a lifelong love of cycling that is still going strong in my 70's. Hi John, I saw a 1962 Legnano on Craigslist Missoula Montana. Frame and fork only, $400. Size is listed as 57-58cm. The paint is rough but a very rare and coveted early Italian bike. I am disappointed about the current state of affairs regarding the bike market ($) and moreover how that might impact growth of the sport for young folks. The owner rode his red 1200 exclusively from 1998 until this past year. He bought it because he knew that it would be a kinder, smoother ride than the bike he was riding and he planned to ride often and long. He rode it across Idaho in an organized event more than once. His wife was emotional about him selling it and had to leave while we were talking. I am truly honored to ride it. It is in very good shape and I am having a longer stem installed that should be ready soon. He is happy that someone who really appreciates the bike will ride it and keep it healthy. I have 3 road bikes that I will keep indefinitely. A 2003-4 Trek 5200 Lance Armstrong USPS, and a 1993 Cilo custom made bike with Columbus SLX tubing that is in very good original condition, and this 1998 Waterford 1200. I feel very fortunate. I began cycling 2 years ago, am 67 years old and ride about 65-85 miles a week. Thanks for the lovely bikes you show on your channel. They are beautiful!

I used to work at a huge aviation company that was named after the founder. When the founder left, the sons and nephews tried to maintain the spirit and innovation, but it was never the same. It always seemed to me that the founder had the advantage of starting small and learning lessons gradually. The sons and nephews got tossed into a very high stakes business where the cost of failing was enormous, and they would never be able to match the success of the founder. That's kind of a lousy situation to be stuck in! So glad that Richard was able to experience founding a business of his own and succeeding at it! Also glad that there was an obvious time to bring things to a close, but it's still a shame that it couldn't be passed to a new owner/manager. BWAAHAA! That was John's 50th anniversary Paramount. Mea culpa... I guess I should offer John some time with my 60th anniversary Paramount. She IS ten years younger ! Lends new meaning to "bike swap"! -Cyril

Schwinn is not a person or a name. It's part of American History.

I agree. But when you talk to Richard you would have to agree that he pretty much created his own personal legacy!

John, not fer nuttin’ but..Schwinn’s were real heavy! I’m 63 now and my dad had a bike shop in NYC in the ‘60’s. We sold Dunelt, Saxon, Rudge and Flying Scot 3 speeds for $40-$50. When I raced as an amateur for Century road club in the ‘80’s I finally became aware that not all Schwinn’s weighed 30+ lbs! I saw my first Paramount and was told it was the “ Top of the line” Schwinn frame set , and some of their top frame builders were WOMEN! Who had learned to braze during WW2.. Anyway, I remember the different models as the LeTour, the Varsity and the Stingray. I still have some old Italian “ lightweight racers” I know you would like to see pictures of so send me an email if you’re interested. Thanks, Paul.
