There is another Anne Rice film, 'Queen of The Damned' from 2002, it isn't as good as this but it's okay. The 'Underworld' film series is good, the 'Blade' films are more of a modern take sort of action/adventure based, 'The Hunger' 1983 is a good one less scary but good, 'Daughters of Darkness' 1971 is another good one which I think that you'd like.

Yes. Interview does Lestat an injustice. ... He is portrayed as the Villain, and he isn't. Not really. Lestat is the VICTIM (does he victimize Louis and Claudia, yes). ... but, "I am going to give you a choice, a choice that I was never given." ... Laudanum is a mixture of opium and alcohol. As you might imagine, it is illegal now, but until the early 20th Century, it was used as a painkiller, and abused just as opiates are today. You really ought to read the novel, as well as the sequel, "The Vampire Lestat." The third novel, "The Queen of the Damned," is OK, then it falls off the rails as Anne Rice got more interested in witches. Unfortunately the higher-ups thought it was too much for the budget and cancelled it. Some executive out there didn't know they were sitting on a winning lottery ticket with those two pairing up again(!). ANYhoo, Tom and Joseph went off and made some little movie called Top Gun: Maverick instead :/ I've always loved 1979's Dracula, with Frank Langella, Donal Pleasence, Sir Laurence Olivier, Kate Nelligan...

Everyone's taste is different of course, and the show has its share of haters, but in my opinion it is a truly excellent adaptation. I would recommend trying to go in with an open mind if you do decide to watch it, because a few major things have been changed (think less "plot points" and more "settings/time periods"), but to me, the series brilliantly captures the soul of the books. Great reaction. Interesting note: The year before Anne Rice wrote Interview, her daughter, Michelle, died just before her sixth birthday of leukemia. And after she completed the manuscript and was discussing it with her husband, Stan, he asked her if Claudia was inspired by Michelle. Anne adamantly denied it, saying that had she even thought anything of Michelle she would have been blocked and unable to complete the book. It is, however, interesting that this was originally a short story that Anne pulled out while Michelle was getting sicker and sicker and closer and closer to death, and decided to expand it into a novel. Could it have been her subconscious embracing creatures that were immortal and could not die? Even young ones like Claudia?

This is very similar to Mary Shelly writing Frankenstein. It's hard to not draw a line form loosing a child to fantasies of immortality and resurrection. I've always looked at the Witching Hour and Taltos as Rice's riff on Frankenstein as well.

The novel series - The Vampire Chronicles - are masterpieces of literature. They attempted a sequel to the movie with The Queen of the Damned starring Aaliyah and Stuart Townsend, but they cut Anne Rice out of the development and it was a major flop without her. The majority of the series centers on Lestat as the protagonist, and it is really compelling for him to be one of the best anti-heroes in literature.

Not getting Cruise to reprise the role was also a factor in people not going to see it, but it's a good movie and even though Aaliyah's performance was really good, there were critics that said queen Akashia would not have been black but rather more typically Egyptian-looking.

The room where Christian Slater is interviewing Louis is even smaller than it appears on film, camera angles help. If you go through the Garden District, you go by Anne Rice's house. This movie is extremely faithful to the book, amazingly so. Through there’s some small changes, like Armand and Claudia were aged up, Claudia was 5 years old in the books when she was turned, Armand was 14. They also cut Lestat human dad who lived with them on the plantation and Claudia and Louis having an encounter with a feral vampire in Europe before meeting Armand crew. Also actually Anne Rice wanted to do a lot of change but the director fought against her to keep the movie as faithful as possible

"God kills indiscriminately, and so shall we..." In later books, we learn that Lestat isn't lying about reading minds and eating villains (he doesn't consider sex workers inherently villainous, most of them were also murderers), but tosses it aside for Claudia because she's a real killer 😅 It kinda makes Louis' brooding and moral conflict all the more ironic. Also, there are a ton of similarities between Lestat and Edward Cullen... I think Stephanie Meyer is a secret fan of Anne Rice 😉
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian 11 месяцев назад
Oh Stephanie Meyer is a total secret fan, but she told a magazine that she couldn't stand Interview With The Vampire. I don't remember her exact words, but she took a cheap shot at Anne Rice, and also said that she felt vampires shouldn't be depressed and lonely creatures. Anne Rice responded something along the lines of, "My vampires contemplate morality instead of acting impulsively. They would take pity on other immortals who's skin glitters in the light and are forced to repeat high school over and over again."

These books are so good. I know there are lots of short stories and other connections, but there are at least three other novels considered cannon. Lestat and Armand each have their own backstory, and then there's Queen of the Damned, which is about Akasha, the first vampire. Ann Rice is an amazing writer, and the world she creates is incredibly dense. Most vampire stories are kind of corny imo, but these were all very good.

The neat thing for me; as a longtime Horror fan, is recognizing the Theatre of The Vampire as a controversial form of stage art called the Grand Guignol; where the grotesque violence and on occasion sexy set pieces were flaunted for 19th Century Parisians to swoon over. Even without a vampire in sight. still the amazing graphic stage effects and engaging performances had even the most ardent critics hard pressed to find fault with. It's celebrated even today, although often theater and movie-goers don't realize the source. But do think of shows like Sweeney Todd if you have any doubts.
