The thing with Ernst is, he pretty much embodies the ideals of his nation and believes that’s how humanity should be. You could say he’s a fanatic idealist coz he literally means what he says. So if his people ever decide to betray those ideals, he’s definitely backing that claim. It goes back to what he said in the first episode when Theo was suggesting to kill them. If humanity can’t survive except by killing children they think is ‘strange’, humanity would be better off dead.

Ernst is like the parallel of Lena's uncle except he hasn't abandoned his country yet. Lena's uncle practically left the Republic to its demise because of similar reason "the principles the country was built upon was betrayed by its own people". So if by chance the Federacy effectively killed the children of battlefield for the sake of mankind (like how the Republic did) then Ernst will be serious on treading the same path as Lena's uncle. Kids dying for the sake of a worthless species is indeed unacceptable. Being a revolutionist that overthrew the old great empire, it's not a surprise that Ernst would have taken it to the extremes when it comes to his ideals. _Fiat justitia ruat caelum_

That warcry with insulting 86 was a way to boost morale. It also feels like respect for the 86 at the same time as it's their dying scream of entrusting the victory to them, the soldiers are actually dying for them. Shin was smiling ever since the large-scale offensive. It's when he realized that the republic had fallen. Everyone that fought beside him had died, waiting to die by his hands, and Frederica is not enough to stop him when she's also chasing after another ghost. When he tried forging something, it brutally backfired (Eugene). Not to mention Lena is now also "dead" to him. His stoicism, his facade now completely taken off so we now can see how far deep he's in (the smile) especially when he's being drowned in the _voices_

A little late but oh well. I agree with the insult to the 86. In a heat of an intense battle, where you're trying to keep fighting spirit up, it wouldn't really sound right to heap cuddly praises. Even to allies. It's a setting where even if the objective is to push through enemy forces to rescue/relieve allies an officer may say something like "alright let's save those sorry bastards!" It could also be a way to remind the men what they're trying to do, to remind those who pity or don't look down on the 86 that they're fighting to give them (and the rest of the squadron) a chance at success, and to remind those that do look down at them that the people they look down on are doing the most dangerous part of the battle so what will that say if they don't try and fight their hardest too? Did he go too far? Maybe, but hell, he was getting shelled by a literal legion of relentless killing machines. I don't blame him for being heated.

This is certainly a suicide mission. But this time EVERYONE is fighting to the end, and not just some oppressed children. This time honor wins over discrimination, though prejudice still exists. The Federacy is certainly flawed, but it is NOT the Republic.
@Quietshade63

I think that what Ernst said is a call back to what he told the 86 at the beginning. He said that a society that has to send children to the battlefront to die doesn't deserve to survive (or something along those lines). I think here he's saying he would go through with those words and put an end to the Federation (and the other countries by alliance) before letting it become another Republic of San Magnolia. I'm really liking it.

Always enjoy seeing people enjoy 86! What really gets me is how the Federacy's troops were giving their lives so the 86 could complete their mission :) That is why I love how this arc mirrors the first cour. During the 1st season our 86 were being sent to their deaths for no reason by an uncaring Republic. Here though we get to see them go on a similar mission but for much better reasons: To save humanity, and this time they have thousands of people fighting/dying to ensure they can fulfill their goal. Not only the Federacy troops we see but we also know the other two countries are doing the same. Yes the 86 still scares some of the people in the Federacy, but they still are willing to die knowing if they give the 86 enough time they will save everyone. Good stuff. Thank you for covering this show!

Shin has a switch. He just goes battle-crazed when in the battlefield. No hate. No sadness. No happiness. No emotion per se. Just fighting for the sake of continuing fighting. He doesn't particularly longs for it when he's away, he doesn't particularly wants to get out once he's in. Almost like an addiction that has already lasted too long.

@@user-C8881 Not really. He doesn't feel he has the right to even want to die, since that would be dishonorable, but still he lacks a will to live. So he contents himself with being close to death while wiping out as many Legion as he possibly can. He's addicted to this macabre dance. Now, I believe he would get real suicidal if in this point in the story the Legion just suddenly stopped existing, because right now he just doesn't know how to live without the war. Fortunately (for him), he'll have a lot of time to figure life and himself out before the end, so if/when it comes, he'll know how to live without it.
@user-C8881
@user-C8881 2 года назад
@@vitoriadias7990 Nah, he is suicidal and just wanted to die, but it's not like he is willing to die without trying, it's like he wanted to die after giving everything that he can, so that he doesn't mock/dishonour their fallen friends. It's just that he kept surviving until now and none of them could kill him.

@@user-C8881 Eh, not really. I feel someone really suicidal wouln't try as hard as he's been trying (to not die). They'd subcounciously make the Legion's job easier by not giving their everything, and Shin gives his everything and way more. LOL But he's depressive, for certain.

Ernst said in the very first episode that if humanity were to give up on innocent children for personal gain, he'd rather see humanity go extinct. He meant what he said and would throw his own people to the wolves to stay true to his ideals

It is implied that Ernst lost wife and child during revolution. Especially child that could potentially be same age as 86 in present time. So he sincerely wants his new "family" to come back no matter what. Even if they gonna be used as Spearhead to pierce through Legion. Ernst can be considered as tragic character. Lost his family and got new one in Frederica, Shin, Raiden, Theo, Anju and Kurena. Was elected as president, so he needs to balance between duties to country and his own beliefs. But he is dead serious to set whole world on fire if he loses his new "family" and values that he cherishes be forgotten by citizens.

Yeah but I also think that they only have the Eighty Six as the most "powerful" squad they have and if they fail and die, then the only thing to do if you wanna finish this war is just by destroy the world entirely.

Tbh, that line about "disgusting 86" was a battle cry to all forces entrusting all hope and blood for success of this operation. In military, it's considered mad respect to our 86. Federacy soldiers know they can't be as same as 86, but they respect and are jealous of 86 at the same time. It's like rivalry between US military branches.

My understanding of the Mascot system was it was used to boost morale, but in the older days when the Empire was around, the military would use the mascot girl as a hostage in a way to threaten the unit she was with. Like, saying they'll hurt the mascot if they don't do a mission or something along those lines, so they were blackmailing the unit into working harder or an innocent mascot would get hurt or worse. (I haven't read the LN but that's my impression from what I've read from other comments and how I understand, so I may be wrong.)

Hey I just wanted to add a little piece of info, the artillery lady also had a mini speech of her own that I thought was epic "Our mission is to provide cover fire for our allies' advance. While they're crawling through the mud let's help em out by blowing those shitty scrap heads straight to hell!! For our comrades on the front lines and those warriors going even farther beyond, keep shooting no matter what!!! Even if the gun barrels burst and angels rain down from the heavens to claim us all, never stop shooting!!!!!!" 86 vol 3 pg 84

This is just my opinion, but as soldiers, one would join knowing that their life would be forfeit for the prosperity of the country and its core ideals. Shin and his company, as well as all non-Alba who were forced into the 86th district, never had even that luxury. Forcefully enlisted, they, those who were non-Alba, the titular "86", would be forced to fight for ideals that never even existed, sham ideals of a hypocritical government. Ernst probably should already know that those who join the army willingly are also willingly giving their lives for the greater collective. However, that's not the case with Shin and his company. I feel that Ernst truly wishes to believe that humanity has some hope in it, seeing Shin and them as that last bit of hope in the capable good in humanity. In addition, I feel that he also believes that if the Federacy isn't capable of even saving, or at least helping, children who were forcefully drafted into a war they never should've had anything to do with, then the core of human morals was severely flawed and compromised to begin with. Therefore, meaning that, should they, the Federacy, fail even this small measure of common morality as human beings, then humanity should just have died in the first place. As he says this later, "If we can't even live up to that ideal, humanity deserves to be destroyed.

So I am a LN reader as far as the mascots go it was not a well thought out or explained. The mascots are like "hostages" She will eat and live with the men so they become attached to her. This will cause them to have a very personal face attached to why they fight. Example If we don't hold the line our base will be overrun and she will be hurt, or more relevant to this episode I told her I would come home so I must win. It was just convoluted and silly. Really it was just a Plot reason have Frederica on the battlefield.
