I seriously need to reevaluate my life. Working a 51 hour shift at Heathrow airport means I'm far too tired to do anything else on my rest days. The thought of getting on two wheels and just riding somewhere fascinating blows my mind. Thank you for sharing your amazing life stories.

Very welcome in our little corner of the world Freddie! And yes : Most Belgians can switch very fast into minimum 4 languages... We are raised like this from childhood or school , but also in the media . All movies we watch are in the original language with subtitels in Dutch or French. So we learn it very fast to speak a lot of different languages. For example : i'm a flemmisch citizen and Dutch is my native language, Frech my second , German, Englisch, Spannish, Polisch, Russian and a bit of Italian .... It makes our hollidays a lot easier!

Amazing roads and good variety of routes (look up Grand Tour du Luxembourg for 7 amazing routes around the country) and the close proximity to tracks Spa, Nurburgring and Hockenheim can certainly keep you entertained during the weekends. Hello. What a nice surprise to see this road trip starting in my city of Malmedy. And thank you for the great pictures. For the record, the garage with the old Volvos was the old Volvo dealership in the region. The owner did not want to follow the standards imposed on Volvo dealerships and ended his contract. He had several new cars in stock at that time. And he always kept them... I wanted, 20 years later, to buy one but it was not possible. So they are still there, new and have been for more than 25 years.

So what's young Dobbs up to today? I think us Brits tend to neglect Belgium, yet from everything I see it strikes me as the perfect place to go for a motorcycle trip. For a start, it's close, no long slog on the autoroute to the Mediterranean just a short hop on the ferry, or the tunnel if you must and you're there. The roads all look beautiful, the scenery stunning, I have a Belgian friend who's Instagram is full of winding roads through forests, opening up to stunning views across meandering rivers, craggy out crops and beautiful little towns, all with great places to stop and eat. And whilst as you point out there are three official languages here, from what my friend says, almost everyone also speaks at least a smattering of English, so for us monolingual Brits, we can get by. I'm very tempted to pack a bag and hop on a boat right now.
@reinmansmith
@reinmansmith Месяц назад
I can throughly recommend the Ardennes region of Belgium. My friend and I rode there last year and couldn’t believe how great the roads were with no traffic and beautiful scenery through the winding river valleys. All within a couple of hours of the Channel 👍

I'm often in that area, it does have great roads, great places to eat and stay and stunning scenery and it extends into Germany, but there is a reason its beautiful and green, compared to the popular bike destinations in Spain and France, it does rain a lot, not a reason not to go, but just to be aware of.

Hi Freddie. Saw you wiping your visor with your gloves, here’s little wrinkle that I found helped lots with mucky visors when I used to commute into London every day. . I got a chammy leather, punched a hole in the corner, tied it to a piece of tape. Tied the other end of the tape to a bulldog clip. I would then wet the chammy before setting off clip the bulldog clip to my belt (so I didn’t lose the leather but if it got tangled up it would just pull off) I’d shove the leather between my legs and every time my visor got mucky a quick wipe and it was clean again. Worked brilliantly unless the leather froze - which it did every now and then on the coldest days.

Used to do day trips to Luxemburg from Central Germany and back, back in the days. The "official" idea was to ride through the Hubsrück Mountains for about 250 miles. A benefit was getting cheap cigarettes and booze there, which for some seemed to be the entire motivation. These were the times where you had to go through Border Control in Wasserbillig of course.

Language is not just about communication and being able to speak multiple languages does not magically solve all the language issues. As a quadrilingual Dutchman I almost got into fight with a Belgian tourist info civil servant because I thought I was in Wallonia and opened the conversation to ask for directions in French, which would be the most practical anyway because the Flemish tend to speak French quite well while the Walloons tend not to speak Dutch/Flemish. He claimed I should be proud at speaking Dutch while that had come naturally to me and fluency in French is a bit of an achievement of the higher educated in the Netherlands. He was obviously taking a stance in the language struggle while I had never felt our language to be surpressed. I knew about the language struggle I just hadn't expected it to be that real to people outside specific politcal contexts. That's over 20 years ago and the language struggle has mellowed down since, but there is a lot more to it than just speaking the others langauge and everything is fine.

When your in Luxemburg City, not far from the Pont Adolphe there is a bakkery called Backerei Fisher. Croisants and coffee there are splendid and not expensive. It is our breakfeast spot every morning if we are there. Make sure to visit Parque la Petruse and Museum Dreï Echelen. Enjoy Freddie, I'm counting down two more weeks and I'm in Luxemburg City again ;)

Isn't it chilly with only a T-shirt under your jacket, Freddie? I want a pair of those gloves. I really like these road videos. It's why I started watching you. My only bike trip through Luxembourg was in 1984. Nick

Concerning the language issue. We all learn multiple languages at school. But I am under the impression that the flemish are more flexible into adapting to the other regions. I will not even try to explain how many goverments we have over here, the structure is complicated and for some also hightly sensitive as they strive for more autonomie. Just enjoy your trip and lets all speak english.

Flemish people are, most of the time, the only ones who can speak the three official languages of the country, and this because of the difference in education

Don't forget, ref to the petrol heads, you are only a couple of hours away from Nurburgring .... If you get a chance try Trier, which has the Porto Negre, one wonderful building in an awesome city.

Hi Freddy, so funny the way you talk about Belgium. I'm a Dutchman, living in Belgium near Brussels, 300 meters from the language-border. I speak Dutch and English, and understand most of the Flemish dialect. I don't speak any French, but if you want to trade everybody understands eachother. I also have friends in London, and my sister lives in Derbyshire. So enough languages among family and friends. If I'm in the French part I mostly speak English, because they see me as a tourist and they are then very friendly. If I speak pure Dutch, the French and the Flemish don't like me because the Dutch are mostly arrogant and loud as tourists. One more thing you should know: We have 5 governments in Belgium.......Flemish, Wallon, German-speaking, a Brussels parliament and a Federal government, in such small country, actually a bit like the UK. If you want to stay in Belgium, near Brussels, you are always welcome. Love your channel, please go on like this.

Regarding the Volvo cars you should’ve asked the old man what his plans were? Plan for an excellent business proposition!!😊

Hello hello, I'm Belgian and a quick explaination on the language situation - overview below in simple terms: Flemish region: people speak overall 2 languages - Flemish and French French region (not the one you're in, in this video): speak overall French German region ( that you're in, in this video): people speak German and French And oh so incorrect: these classic Honda PanEurope's and Yamaha FJX's have such high prices now, it makes your head spin....

Luxembourg is indeed very nice, so is the country side and the city of Luxembourg. Was just there last week on Thursday. You mentioned a lot of "special" cars/vehicles when you were in Belgium/Malmedy. Mind, it is in the vicinity of Spa race circuit and one will always see very serious money on 4 and 2 wheels there. Belgium and Luxembourg are really very nice to explore on two wheels. Foodwise, Belgium is more reasonable priced than Luxembourg, I think. Should there be people who like madeleine biscuit: Go to 4 rue de´l Eau in the city of Luxembourg. You will get the most delicious madeleines you´ve ever had!
