Heartworm developer here - just wanted to thank you again Nexpo for showcasing my game. There's a new demo out on steam now and the love and outreach from your audience has been amazing. My dream is to complete the game and this spotlight is a huge help in getting there.
@@mems7917 gunna need to see proof that you aren't a complete "We-Todd", as you would've had your proof simply by clicking the dude's profile, or better yet, just looking at the guy's name and seeing that its the name NEXPO literally said was the dev when intro'ing the demo....... my god, lmao!
We're the developers of Loveland! Thank you for taking the time to put together this amazing video diving into the world of Haunted PS1. The Frog-Worshipping Cult of Loveland Cove approves 🐸
Fantastic work! It really nails that ‘hair on the back of the neck standing’ eeriness that frogs croaking in the background normally shouldn’t be able to do
no idea why no one is talking about it but WALK has got to be one of the most incredible horror games ive seen in a LONG time. its so simple, you dont know anything, all you know is to walk. the fixed perspective was nothing short of genius. id love to see more games utilize that.
WALK even has a secret ending. Apparently it sends morse code messages through your dual shock controller when the monster approaches you and the controller vibrates. You have to type the words it tells you and you get transported into a burning forest, where you have to reach the top of the tower and the monster chases you as a harpy and eventually kills you. Then it cuts back to the little girl walking. lol
No one lives under a lighthouse does a similar thing to WALK. It has a scene where you play from the perspective of the monster. It's about you showing up on an island with a lighthouse where the previous caretaker has disappeared, but something is not quite right. I highly recommend it.
The whiplash from hearing Nexpo's voice coming from a normal man to seeing said man speak in a normal voice is insane. I never knew you've been doing a voice this whole time.
Growing my Grandpa actually has some neat takes on how to get over someone being gone too, talking to an eldritch being beyond my understanding was actually very insightful
You should make this a yearly Halloween special, showcasing all of that year's entries, starting with the goofy ones and ending with the terrifying ones
I don't remember if this was mentioned, but, if you own the full version of Mothered, the demo changes and turns into something of a sequel, which you ABSOLUTELY have to play if you liked what you see here. It's so so sooooo good.
Mothered makes me so angry. Imagine having your consciousness ripped from your body and placed into a machine, you are awake but cannot control what the machine body does. You are forced to helplessly watch your own mother, someone you loved more than anything in the world, treat you like garbage and feed you literal dirt. The few desperate times you are able to override the bot programming and cry out to her, she reacts with fear and hostility. I know it's a prequel to the main game, and this is a semi-spoiler, but man I hope she got revenge on her parents in the end.
You think about it, if the parents couldn't get their heads out their asses to see they are hurting the kid, whatever grandpa did to them was deserved.
32:15 To anyone who's curious, this is a rare example of "second person" (not first person or third person) gameplay. Another example that I can think of that does this is a mission in Driver: San Francisco, where you see through the eyes of the person who's chasing you with a car, while you're controlling your own car through his POV. It's a really fascinating gameplay/storytelling concept.
If I remember correctly, I believe it was also sorta used in either the hitman games, or the first Condemned game criminal origins. Where it sends you into the killers POV for a short bit.
My personal favourite instance of 2nd person gaming is in Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass, where one of the bosses turns invisible and while you have the standard top-down perspective on the bottom screen, the top screen has a 2nd person view of the boss coming after you
I always thought Mothered was about surviving an abusive home- you don't see a mother you see a monster - to survive you become a robot that she can program - you have warning systems in place so that you don't make mother angry- and escaping can feel futile. It's honestly one of the saddest games- if you think of it that way.
I think there's evidence in the main game that contradicts this, specially when you realize what has happened. Trying to talk about it without spoilers is rough tho
Something people may not realize, but the museum of the 2021 demo seems to be a callback to the fantastic 'namco museum' of the PS1. The little ghost guy in the corner has me 100% convinced that this is the case.
Pacman reference. Now I hope they dont make a pacman world horror game. Theres something uncanny about that game, kinda. And tocman is easy childhood nightmare fuel
Growing my grandpa is disturbingly beautiful, and despite how growing a loved one is completely unrealistic, the struggles that Adrienne goes through hits really close to home. I too had parents on the brink of divorce, constantly fighting, shortly after my grandma passed. Course I never turned to blood rituals and pulsating organisms in my basement but what Adrienne yearns for is exactly how I felt when I was in the same spot. Gives the horror of it all a much more personal feel.
The funny thing about heartworm is that exposure therapy tends to not be the greatest idea for trauma, especially because exposure therapy aims to force you into the highest reaction you can experience and keep doing that until it no longer effects you for people with trauma it tends to causes people to shut down and possibly make everything just worse, pushing past the trust thermaclide and then you need a new therapist
I was recommended a similar solution to childhood trauma that I only remembered in my twenties, but I had no choice but to see that trauma in my minds eye for well over a year, nonstop, in ever6 waking moment Over a long period of time combined with an extreme force of will, I put it back into Pandoras Box and learned to accept that it happened and that's all
@@SamuelBlack84 There are no such thing as repressed memories. Unfortunately, a lot of ignorant or unscrupulous therapists will run with a false or implanted memory, making it just as traumatic and damaging as a real memory. Equally unfortunate is the sheer amount of families that have been torn apart because of serious accusations stemming from such implanted false memories. Whatever you "remembered" in your 20s likely didn't actually happen to you, but because of this dangerous kind of therapy, it affects you just as badly as if it did.
@WobblesandBean Regretfully, it did happen, and it wasn't an implanted memory because it emerged before I sought out a therapist There are still blanks in my memory for many reasons and I'm content to let them stay that way
@@WobblesandBeantf are you on about "theres no such thing as repressed memories" There absolutely is. I've had several memories of mine resurface and I've never even been to a therapist, so you cant claim they've been "implanted" either. Its a documented psychological phenomenon, not something you can just fucking handwave away
Can I just praise your audio work for a second? It gives an absolutely delicious vibe to your work, and it can get super creepy if it needs to be with low synths and droning ambience. Good on you!
@@smkfet Well, Rod Serling actually wrote a lot of the stories he was presenting, Nexpo is presenting other peoples work. With that said, Nexpo is in a tier of his own. No one else's videos make me feel so... cozy and creeped out at the same time
Love to see a creator who takes every occasion to homage the horror that inspires them. Your videos have the same vibe as cozying up in the RE2 safe room with a friend and telling ghost stories. I'll forever be excited for anything you create. Happy Halloween 🎃💖
I’m 54 year old female and love your channel. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can relate and communicate so well with everything you explore! Keep up the great work!
Walk is so interesting to me, because it uses real photos from recent years. I recognize the political posters, the style of vending machines, etc. It feels like a walking simulator of my daily walk to work, but then suddenly is a horror game. It's so real and yet surreal. Such a unique horror experience.
The second you said the words Loveland and frogs in the same sentence I already knew what was happening. I live about 45 minutes from there and the frog man is a classic local cryptid story. There's also a "haunted" castle in that area.
man, I was watching that segment and was thinking of "discover my body" without knowing its by the same dev, had to check right after and was not disappointed, what an incredibly unique and recognizable style for me to immediately know after 2 years!
3:14 As a finnish person, this just made me laugh 😂The first person says: "I'm gonna drive over your outhouse, with your car!" and the second person says: "I'm gonna get the hell out of here."
I can’t thank you enough for including accurate subtitles. As a deaf and hard of hearing person, it is so helpful to have. I wouldn’t be able to enjoy watching your videos without them!
Nexpo’s videos are so high quality that I wouldn’t be surprised if he started making a horror series of his own. Edit: Turns out he did in fact start his own analog horror. Good job!
“Created with love by Nexpo” Damn right, that was an absolutely excellent video man. Thanks so much for sharing and putting this together. Walk was effin cool and terrifying.
I absolutely adore these types of games. They bring you in to a different world that gives me comfort but also fear. I've been playing so much of these games, especially the ones by Puppet combo. But, with these demos, Haunted PS1 2021 has a lot of really fun demos. I didn't know about the 2020 one and I still need to explore the 2022 one more. Really good video, Nexpo. I really loved this one.
MOTHER hit very, very close to home. it particularly reminded me of the conversations i have almost daily with my parents. it felt so, so ominous. it gave me that exact feeling of dreading guilt that i always get. wow!!
@@Coelohihi It's not really traumadumping though, more like a passing remark. Traumadumping would be going into detail about the trauma, they just said something about their trauma.
What I truly love about all of these games is that none of them seem to rely on jumpscares to make them scary or unsettling. It's all about the aesthetics and the overall feelings of unease the games try to convey. The plot twist at the end of Mothered truly made me gasp. That was one of the most mind blowing endings to a game I've ever seen, even if it was just a demo. Thank you so much for making this video and showing us all these amazing games, I can't wait for Gob and Echostasis ❤❤
Loveland is an actual town in Ohio and the Loveland Frog is a supposed creature that had been sighted in the area in the 50s. It's pretty good to see such a ridiculous legend get some recognition.
I live like 20 mins from Loveland, but I've never heard of this frog thing! Only local legend I can think of is like the "Midget village" one? Theres some weird little spot off one of the back roads, with abandoned huts and odd structures. Supposedly inhabited by creepy little people.
honestly i am not really feeling the arg videos lmfao i like hearing about real life shit or spooky things i could not care less about a silly video game or some college students art project lmfao
@@kg7219 well I guess it's a different taste. Personally I really do like this kind of stuff. I recommend some of nexpos other videos if you want something that you would like more than this.
Mothered has stuck around in my mind since this video was uploaded. Earlier this year I woke up from a hit-and-run that I don't remember, I was brought home to stay with my family, my mother is a gaslighter at the best of times, but now I had a head trauma causing paranoia and PTSD. I was convinced there was some elaborate conspiracy going on. Can't believe there's a game that's essentially about the same thing. Then again, as I recovered, I was playing MGSV, so apparently there's some recurring themes here.
I love the way "Walk" utilizes perspective. All other games u r just running and hiding in a locker in 1st person & it in no way gives the feel, vibe, effect, that Walk does. Man these are GEMS of creations of imagination/art work/ psychological macabre oddities. I LOVE IT!
Echostasis is scary because it feels like it’s exactly what’s happening with AI art now, it’s currently creating things that a human mind inputs (which is already making artists lose opportunities) but in the future it could get better and better, until the point where you couldn’t tell the difference between a human’s work, and an ai’s soulless mass-produced generation. A cerebral scan is starting to seem like plausible development in the future…
Honestly, the only way I could accept art made by an AI is if it's a truly SENTIENT AI. When/if we hit that level of tech (presuming we don't piss them off to go Skynet-mode on us), *then* I'll consider it, since it'll at least be from something (or rather someone) that is making something out of their own creativity, and not some random tag or search result being fulfilled through an algorithm.
it’s depressing. instead of automating work to have more time for art, we’re automating art to have more time for work. if this is the world I’m going to grow up into I think I’ll pass tbh
Loveland gives me the creeps. There’s something so horrifying about it’s quietness and without this video I wouldn’t of even known it existed. Now I can’t wait for it to fully release.
i’m usually a lurker, but i’ve watched almost every single one of nexpo’s videos and he still impresses me. the attention to detail… the narration… the editing… nexpo does everything right. i suffer from pretty bad anxiety and agoraphobia so i find it hard to watch things like this, but nexpo’s calming voice always brings me back to earth. such an amazing and unique human catering to such a niche audience. i truly appreciate you, nexpo!
@@torachan23 I don't actually have anything specific to say about this video, but I hope my copypasta gets a few 👍s & possibly even a ♥️... ...well, it worked, so **nyah nyah**
I suffer from PTSD, and generalized anxiety disorder. So, I find it hard to venture out of my daily solitude, and there's a few content creators who I spend much of my time watching as it helps my issues a bit. Unless I pop a Xanax or two, I can't do much, but these types of videos are soothing to me.
In a gaming world where everything triple A seems like it wants to replicate real life, I love when a game gets goofy or intentionally uses 'bad' graphics. These games probably wouldn't be as good as they are of they didn't have that low polygon aesthetic. Ngl. Makes me miss when this was the norm.
Hey, I just want to thank/congratulate you for creating the ‘Nexpo Voice’…I always assumed that was just how you spoke, but knowing it’s a character-creation is even more badass. Keep it up, dude.
Oh my god I'm so excited for the Enigma video. Echostatis and Mothered are some of the most fascinating pieces of media I've seen in a long time and I'm eager to watch a full video on them! Another one out of the park, my friend.
Ohh I'm so happy to see more love for Growing My Grandpa!! All of Yames games are creepy as heck, but this one was especially good. Also, maybe it was just me, but feeding and teaching 'Grandpa' was strangely cute in a way. He's so proud of how good his pronunciation is :)
mothered is one of my favorite games in general. it’s just..so surreal and the twist is so good. it made me think about it for a while afterwards. such a great game.
I like to imagine it's set in a world populated by doll-like androids, and the human race is extinct The idea of machines designed to resemble mannequins inhabiting our society in our place really unnerves me
I feel like the Japanese horror game is scary because of the awkward perspective making it feel like you’re watching real security camera footage. Great video as always Nexpo 👍
Nexpo didn’t mention Enigma Machine, another game by Enigma Studios that directly ties into the lore and backstory of Echostasis. Alpha Beta Gamer has a play through of it and he actually covered most of these games in the past
1:02:48 the scariest part of that for me is when youre going straight to bed, the text says - you can not sleep when someone is in your room, or at least in the full game.
My best friend in high school showed it to me I still remember the uncanny terror of being in a long, empty, and still hallway with a silent zombie coming towards me The original zombies were far creepier with how silent and truly dead they appeared
PS1 horror used to scare me when I was a lot younger. Most titles of that time are funny and janky now. These demo discs successfully recreate what I felt that time.
“Created with love by Nexpo” “Watched with love from all of us!” Great video as usual. I wish there was enough time to make a 4 hour video on this. It was really just an overall fun topic. Can’t wait for the next one!
I HATE horror. I'm not good with it. But for some reason, I watch channels like this one constantly. Well done, Nexpo. You can take several different horror concepts, and make it viewable to those who would usually never be able to stand it.
Lol, same - I find that I love deconstructions and analysis of horror movies and games, and I enjoy reading and writing horror, but I'll cover my eyes in a scary movie. 😂
The game that starts at 14:15 reminds me exactly of my own afflictions, my experiences with traumatic amnesia due to childhood trauma, and what it's like trying to face the flashbacks from the trauma.
His videos got infinitely more watchable for me when I just started putting them on 1.5 speed. Then it felt like a normally paced video instead of something where he seemingly needs to take a long breath right before the last few words of every sentence.
didn't know how much i needed a segment of you talking about one of yames' games. they're always so bizarre and intriguing, they fit right in with your channel honestly.
I love how Neko Yume and LSD Dream Emulator are liminal spaces but essentially from an early-internet/gaming-nostalgia perspective instead of IRL-nostalgia
Watching long-form content is not something easy for me to do, but for some reason the way you do it makes it all the more entertaining. Your videos helped make good times and cover up bad ones so i hope you continue to strive along with your community. :)
so glad yames is getting the recognition they deserve. i love their nightmarish lovecraftian horror and i hope more people will also appreciate their games aswell :)
around 1:07:40 in Mothered - that effect on the screen is an impressively accurate simulation of what happens when you point an analog closed-circuit camera at it's own output on a CRT screen. Now there's an obscure analog thing to hit the nail on the head of.
I found Yames - the developer of Growing my Grandpa - from Markiplier's gameplay, and prior to that, he had played many of his other works on his 3 SCARY GAMES series. Yames makes such good games that resonate a certain type of terror to me, personally, and I love his work. the FAITH trilogy is another one I would recommend. Growing up Catholic, the occult and supernatural stuff terrified me the most... and the trilogy cemented that childhood terror I had. Good stuff.
This is why Nexpo is my #1 favorite RU-vidr. Never heard another human utter a word about Shadow Man, a game I grew up playing with my mom. Never heard anyone else say anything about the haunting, nostalgic feeling PS1 horror holds. Amazing upload I'm so grateful
Nexpo would have a field day with the Neverhood. I was so intrigued by that game as a child, but it creeped me out constantly even if it didn't intend to
@@McCloudDash91 oh no, The Neverhood creeped you out? I loved that game as a teenager. I never would have sold my copy had I known how limited they would be today apparently. It's more of a whimsical game, but the emptiness of the world I could see being unsettling for a kid. All that claymation was hella expensive, that's why there's not many characters. I don't know if you can find it, but they had a making of for that game and the set was absolutely bonkers. If you can, ::clears throat::, procure a copy it's worth playing through. It's a neat adventure game, from the time when they were all the rage. The Neverhood and the two Discworld games...those being back happy memories.
I like the fulfilled contract ending. even though it is utterly terrifying with how whiskers outright rewrote the parents in the most disturbing way, Adrienne was left alone and given the best ending for her. Even if whiskers didn't care about her personally and only saw it as a contract, the fact that it didn't harm her in this ending and gave her what she truly wanted is heartwarming.
that ending is simple, trustworthy magic. you fulfill the deal and things go well and she gets her happy end. the other one could go literally any direction, she is host to something that is totally unknown.
Honestly, I was kind of hoping that the twist to "Mothered" was that you had undergone delicate brain surgery and things seemed so weird because you were still recovering. And like, maybe you can just go along with it and eventually things go back to normal or you "fight" the "monsters" and maybe that's the sad ending where you realize that there were no monsters all along.
That demo Walk is absolute genius. Some of the best atmosphere and creative gameplay I’ve ever seen. Belongs up there with PT, although it looks like it might actually be better (I know how heretical that is to say)…. Had to add…holy ship!! MOTHER is the most uncanny thing I’ve ever seen. Damn! This whole project is so cool
The last game mentioned has some similarities to a short film by David Lynch called The Grandmother. It has a plot where a boy who also has mean, bitter parents, plants some seed and grows a grandmother. I wonder if the game developers of Growing Grandpa took inspiration from that short film mentioned.
Happy to have found your channel when you were much smaller, you deserve all the recognition for your hours of dedication. From deep dives into the internet to bringing us a whole new meaning of "playthroughs", you're super awesome and always bringing the best. Thanks for the content Nextpo. :)
I have to say, the games by Enigma Studios blew me away. I love the soundtracks to them and I love the cryptic connections betwwen the two games. They were incredible!
the game devs he shouted out in the beginning are two of my favorites as well. Aka Manto by Chilla's Art is insanity and one of the scariest and most challenging survival horrors ive ever played. Night Shift is a good one too, as it perfectly emulates how it feels to be a woman at night/someone being stalked. if ur looking for Puppet Combo games, PLEASE do urself a favor and play Murder House. that game had me fucked up by the end of it. happy gaming!
Not gonna lie, when I realized that Mothered was related to Echostasis I got a serious chill go down my spine at the realization. While I don't ever want to touch that game with a 12ft pole, I think that feeling is enough to make me want to see if anyone else has a playthrough of it. Honestly, I don't know how else to put that feeling I had as anything other than a chill because I don't know if I know if I've ever had that kind of feeling before. Arguably similar yes, but not the same. ANd that, I think, is a damn good sign for any game. EDIT: ALso super-hyped at the hint that you will revisit these games!
Nexpo, your videos are the only ones that give me true butterfly’s and excitement while watching. It feels like a close friend that has the same weird interests as I, taking my hand and guiding me into the abyss. Thanks man! I appreciate what you do 🎃 happy Halloween
"D" was one of the first PS1 games I ever played. Something about the awkward unnatural voice acting and the slow movement made it feel surreal and creepy in a unique way. I probably wouldn't have the patience to play through it today, but back then those graphics blew my dang mind.
I remember playing through the full version of Mothered and loving every moment of it-I had no idea that the dev had other titles out and that their stories are connected, so I’m definitely going to have to check those games out too!
The feeling I get from the ps1 boot up must be the feeling others get from asmr. The deep tingly feeling that starts at the base of the skull moving thru the ears and stopping at the front teeth. Like biting into a creme filled donut with icing on it. Stimulus of senses deep in me.
This the only time I've ever heard someone mention Shadow man. I loved that game! The combination of the atmosphere, voodoo imagery and lore, and jump scares produced a really unique haunting experience.
My halloween this year was filled with dread and uncomfort; having personal problems rob me of my happiness and my favorite holiday. Episodes like this, the upcoming Local58 episode in an hour of posting this, Blameitonjorge's work; are all exciting. Thank you for giving me a sense of fear I needed on Halloween.
I love Nexpo's content because it has a heart that a lot of other channels seem to miss out, he's got the perfect mood, but he has silly little moments that break the character of this serious, no-nonsense horror channel that he usually is that make those moments so much more enjoyable, and the heart that goes into the videos are something else, none of them are ever uninteresting or unentertaining to watch, ever.
Hey Nexpo, I know this will be lost in the thousands of comments, but your work means so much to me. I just finished Army Basic Training and being able to watch something familiar such as one of your videos is just one of the best things possible. Thank you for all you do, You inspire me as well as the rest of us.
@@jake53105 if you go in with a bad mental or mindset about it you will struggle. It's different for everyone but I'd say it was an "experience", for every bad moment I had, I had a good one, met some cool people, met some shitbags. I'm almost done with AIT now and I still have a long ways to go but I wouldn't have changed my path if I could go back.
I like how the subtitles for the Playstation 1 boot up sound was "uneasy music" lol still one of my favorite sounds. Your writing and editing are superb every time. I love the transitions, you make your ad segments with as much atmosphere as the rest of the video, so much great consistency with this channel. Keep it up Nexpo, you're awesome.
what totally sold me on that demo was the backgrounds for each scene being an actual image, I love that style of placing uncanny digital characters into a real life space
This is my third or fourth time trying to watch/listen to this without falling asleep in the beginning. I always prefer watching Nexpo videos curled up in blankets surrounded by too many stuffed creatures. And because of how soothing his voice is, falling asleep is a common occurrence during these videos.
I really liked the IRL section near the end! As someone just getting into narrating it's fun to see you slip into your normal voice! Would love to see you cover more games in the future, your coverage of the local 58 game is one of your best segments imo
Cannot express enough how your content is one of the things I look forward to most! You can tell just how much thought and effort you put into everything you do, thankyou Ryan
I can't explain the bizarre happiness I have finding out about this PS1 revival wave. I have been obsessed with the idea for a long time, I've never known about projects like these until now - things like the Bloodborne demake, Haunted PS1.. It's awesome to know that this pure love for a highly specific aesthetic connects our brains, providing a shared dreamscape which we all wander through. We are wandering in that space together, despite being distributed all over the world - and together, without even knowing it, we all create the desire for these things - a true collective unconscious. It's awesome.
