Good question! The animal map icons appear once one of the need zones associated with that icon/herd is discovered. Only one need zone needs to be discovered for the main icon to show up
I believe when I started I was using the default which is generally accepted as too far zoomed in. To this day I still use a FOV that is zoomed in further than most
This is a great map but I do have one small complaint. The logs are solid and you can not pass through them like on the American map. If you are trying to get close to an animal for a better shot and you are in an area with lots of down trees you have to run an obstacle course down to the end of each log to try and find a path. I spent a couple real life hours yesterday looking for the brown bear. Found lots of bear tracks and need zones but no bear.
