There was some kinda (un)holy power involved in that. His nat 20s at the most perfect story moments, throughout Percy's arc just added so much to the story. It was so great.
I'm borrowing this, possibly even somewhere from the comments in this episode but now we all know it as: "Dagger, Dagger, Dagger ... ... And I walk away."
Scanlan: "You remember what Pike looks like?" Elowen Brist: "Yeah, about your size, light-ish hair..." Scanlan: "Hair the color of the sunset; eyes like waves that crash in the night; breasts supple, firm-" Grog, interrupting: "Okay, uh, Scanlan, uh, Scanlan-" Ashley Johnson: "True, true, true."
Liam's reaction to Pike's insight check on Vax was gold. His whole face went "oh no now I have to have a mum talk I'm gonna look like an ass" it's beautiful.
I love how Liam is almost always in character. Giving Keyleth longing looks while she is casting spells or just talking to others, even him admiring her sky drawings. There is so much non-verbal cues and it is beautiful.
1:26:50 Scanlan "and there's a little statue of Sarenrae, and if you pull it, a little secret door opens to my room. But it's a small door that only a gnome could fit through." Pike "Oh, great! Is there a lock on that, maybe?" OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo, Pike is so savage!
He is the best voice Vox Machina has. Keyleth is too self-conscious to do anything wise and usually ends up stumbling on her morals, Vax is a loner who is only really around for Vex and Keyleth and probably couldn't care less if the world burned, Vex makes the group look bad with her greed when she haggles people in need of assistance, Percy has a head on his shoulders but generally prefers to use it for tinkering, Grog is honestly the second head of Vox Machina, and where the hell is Pike most of the time? _(^Rhetorical^. I know Ashley has her own stuff she needs to do, but hopefully you get my point)_
The trick is to plant a knee firmly under the table, or if the table your at has a beam spanning between the to legs, looping your feet under that. Cannot comment if that's what he's doing but it's a easy enough thing to do.
originally Travis was going to have low charisma and be a dick brab kinda like kevdak but matt convinced him to to play low int as they are fun to play.
@@SPACEHARICE I don't want to picture Grog being a 'dick', the Grog we got was so loveable that you wanted to help him and cheered him on when he succeeded.

Fucking Sam had me in tears when he started screaming after getting shot by Vex. I love the group as a whole but my heart sinks whenever he misses an episode, as he brings so much to the interactions of the group.

I love how Vex did so much research to turn Vax's perspective around for the raven queen ; v ; it was like, the only thing she could do for him and it was so sweet.
I kind of found it meta gamey tbh. How would she know that Vax is upset of the raven queen taking him up on the offer and not because he almost lost the only family he had left? He could have been wary of pike bc she wasn't there when his sister needed her, and ofc it's not pike's fault, but a character in a traumatic situation could easily assign blame randomly. Nobody remarked that Vax stayed away from Pike when she appeared.
@@paulineisme I think if you have a twin who you're extreamly close with... You just know. The thing is, I don't even think Liam really expressed as a player these thoughts. Laura as a player sensed his apprehension about it, it says so much about their friendship. I think if a player can figure something out on their own, it isn't meta gaming, because they weren't provided the info straight out.
@@xBlacksStarx She wasn't supposed to know that Vax has been having visions and dreams about the Raven Queen. I agree that she would have noticed that Vax was different around Pike, but just how would she figure the raven queen claimed him as a champion?
@@ItsFerreiras We're both really late for this, but they were in a very flat area with no trees, and Sam said that. The others who were paying attention try to correct Sam, but Sam just says the tall grass is like a tree for him.
@@ItsFerreiras Matt said that the area where they were had no trees. Still, they asked to hide in a tree, or if that there was any trees around a few times. I feel like Scanlam asked to hide in a tree on purpose, to makes fun of the other times they did that, or to get that exact reaction.
Matt acting as a little kid is probably the cutest thing I've ever seen? His voice when he said "this many" had me audibly "awww"ing at five in the morning.
Nine year old know they are nine, they wouldn't say "this many". That's a much younger child thing because usually parents are still teaching them to count and so their grasp of numbers is more related to what the number looks like on their fingers. Usually by the time they need more than one hand, they are over it. Being that I don't think Matt has children, I let it go, but that is something you'd get from a much younger child, or a developmentally delayed one. The way I wrote it off for a 9 year old is based on what Matt explained about the son being kidnapped and stashed in a pocket dimension for a long time without his mother before being rescued, his emotional development might be stunted due to both the trauma and the fact that his mother may have babied him since his return.
Speaking bluntly...this is a medieval time period...so a person of lower class with less schooling might not gain knowledge of math until their later years...11 or older. Up until that point their parents would let them just be wild kids...
Grog (Travis) "Do you need a 'hand' getting back to camp.." to the map maker (Who lost an arm). Everyone "Aw man, not cool!" Vex (Laura) "HAHahahaHAHAHah!" And that's why their married!

I love Vax's/Liam's new attitude towards the Raven Queen. Of course, we've seen how naïve Vax can be when it comes to magic and religion, and seeing him be so "disrespecrful" to a powerful god that is responsible for the death and resurrection of his sister is amazingly halarious to watch and brilliant (in my opinion) on Liam's part.
Liam is a real Rogue. Pretending to be Brother/Sister with one Mates Girl while hitting ingame on the other Dudes one. And everyone thinks the Bard is the horny one.....
Every time Pike shows up everyone is so happy to see her. But Travis and Laura are just so happy it's heartwarming. When Grog gives her the gauntlets of oger strength, that was an awesome moment and really cool of him to do. I wish she was here more often as I am sure everyone does. But luckily as an actor she is blessed to be on a TV show as well.

They did. And then the forgot. Which was sad. If I ever play DnD, I would like to find a Bag of Colding... Not sure how useful it would actually be though, the character ideas I have are for either a Rogue/Cleric or a Barbarian/Warlock.
There needs to be a series of magic items/spells called "Items made by mages who can't spell" such as Meatier Swarm, which just causes a rain of flaming beef, "Speak with Dad", "Bell of Ogre Power" etc.

+OneEyedJack Atheism isn't reasonable, but agnosticism is... Best definition for being agnostic I ever heard is simply this "They don't understand the nature of God(s) and are pretty sure no one else does either." Agnostics don't deny the existence of divinity... just don't see the point of worshiping them, especially in some of the convoluted and contradictory ways humans (and in fantasy, elves, dwarves etc) seem to do. If they are so far above and beyond mortal comprehension... why waste time trying to comprehend? To know the unknowable? Most agnostics simply see it as a moot point... one you'll find out about when it's time, and not before... so they simply don't waste a lot of time on it is all. They may believe God(s) exist... but they don't actively worship, or think about them much. Now, in a world of intervening, miracle powering, and occasionally "in-your-face-obnoxious" deities, atheism is patently ridiculous. +Bear Grills Yes, before the campaign end he does seriously game the game with bonuses etc to get max crits etc.. believe it or not he even figures out how to get the assassinate ability to trigger... once. love it when Ashley comes in, but watching s03, its so much nicer seeing her feeling free to act out knowing she is going to be around to deal with any fall out.
When Vax decided to leave the cartographer as stone, I thought he was knowingly trying to fulfill the will of the Raven Queen - allowing and not intervening the process of death. But apparently, Liam just forgot that they could be unpetrified 😂 could have been a nice opportunity, but it's all good

1:35:00 Wait... Percy can bring in materials and craft something... then anything left inside is ejected at the time the spell runs out. So... they could sneak into a place and set up the door... then he builds some sort of large acid / fire / gunpowder based thing... then they just exit and sneak out of the place... then eventually the mansion spell vanishes and surprise deployment. I guess that is a little complicated... so they might do it.

@@sstuart9301 just watching these for the first time.... I'm fairly positive Jameson whiskey sponsors the coffee pot. If not, the critter community does a hell of a job keeping them stocked.
This episode perfectly sums up why Critical Role is absolutely fantastic: we got super deep, poignant and emotional roleplay with Vax&Vex discussion about the Raven Queen, and goofy, hilarious, pure gold comedy with the chicken archery scene. Gosh, I love this show so much.
I know this is old, but I just realized that a big reason why the party is going up against the Chroma Conclave is because someone gave Matt all those huge dragon miniatures for Critmas. If true, it's kind of amazing how much the community can influence the show.
He didn't open the two minis until after the dragons attacked, so either the timing was coincidental or people heard about thordak and sent huge dragon minis for him to use
Late reply, but Matt has spoken in Q&A's about always wanting to run a dragon-centric storyline ever since he started DM-ing. He never got to it because the campaigns he ran before this were low to mid-levels, and he didn't want to use young weak dragons, just for the sake of having them. He wanted to use the ancient dragons. He started sowing seeds of the Chroma Conclave arc back during their home game (when the group faced Brimscythe the blue dragon). And when Vox Machina started to dive into the high-levels (12 and above), he launched the arc with a bang. That said, the community did help by providing Matt with a properly-sized colossal red dragon mini for Thordak. But it's definitely a reactionary thing, as people noticed Matt didn't have a red dragon mini for Thordak's first couple of appearances.
A trap on his door shaped headstone with 3 daggers so it can Dagger, dagger, dagger.....when someone walks away and the daggers blink back into the trap and reset it.
@@qrrbrbirbel2 But wasn't the whole lesson that came from the Raven Queen arc was that Vax couldn't outrun death?... At least that's how I saw it... Maybe others see it differently, but yeah... (OK, I feel really awkward now, sorry if this seemed aggressive in any way.)
@@luckyfluf0 That was totally on point. It's a character who runs away from their issues now having forcibly bound themselves to an unescapable commitment with death (at least what it sounds like).
... Well done. Yh he keeps doning what Sam and Dean do in supernatural. Basically these two brothers die through the show and the itye8 one that's left alive from the attack break the rules of like Everything to get them back and the stakes keep getting higher. At the end one of them accepts death and the other let's him go. And the show ends. Although the show has a different theme to this campaign arc... I think Fate in mercer's world is like you can live your own life and your sister is independent. Like she doesn't really car about the whole thing (her greed is dragon level BTW like srsly she got herself killed and left vac in that hole and while she did make an investigation check she didn't tell percy... She's one of the interesting). And like I suppose a revivufy is OK like that is divine power is suppose or whatever but like the didn't know the risk has the wife of a devil god telling him if this goes wrong it could be worse than dragons and does it anyway. He's too "serious" about her like i get trading your life for someone elses even that though in a very very slight way he is being selfish bc he doesn't ask her or actually care what her opinion is just wants her to be safe again understandable. But you need to be responsible like know the consequences of your actions. Actually that applies to him just sneaking of without telling anybody amongst the group he is one of the most reckless characters. While grog says let's just GO because being idle won't solve any problems he's like im going forward and I don't care. Tldr he needs to chill and learn some responsibility to himself, others and the world
That breakfast archery brings back sore memories for me. I was once part of a game of a homebrew gamesystem with a group of friends. We were all pretty low level characters and encountered a bear to fight. As I was a tank I was up close and personal dodging all the attacks like a pro and hitting all my marks. Sadly the archer way back didn't and through a series of weird but memorable critical fails and critical hits on his and on my part my character got taken out with a headshot to the back of the head and died. Now every time an archer rolls a one and manages to hit one of his companions I think back to that day. Possibly the lamest character death I ever had, but at the same time absolutely unforgettable.
One time, I was in a game where our party consisted of a warlock, paladin barbarian, rogue, and a vampire. (4e class, not race.) I was the vampire, but only the warlock and rogue knew, as the barbarian was dumber than a sack of shit, and the paladin trusted me and never asked. In one boss fight, I made a mistake and forget to get away after making my attack. Next turn, I got grappled and ended up dropping to 0 HP. When the Paladin saw I was down, he came to heal me with a divine spell, (we didn't even tell him out of game that I was a vampire, he assumed I was a rogue or assassin) the rule book states that when a vampire is hit by divine magic of any type while at 0 HP, he instantly dies. So...he healed me, and I immediately burst into nothingness, Voldemort style. Best character death ever.
At first I thought Vax was being a bit of a dick about not wanting to help the map maker. Then I remembered that he's a servant of the Raven Queen now... I wonder if depetrification is considered bringing someone back to life.
I thought it had to do with the fact that a) they were bringing him back missing an arm. b) They were in a really dangerous area c) He himself didn't know how to undo the petrification and didn't want to tell the party if there was no way to bring him back and thus they were forced to know that he was dead.
liam can be a bit of a dick with not telling his party about things. i know he gets excited about the roleplay but this is a communal event and it feels gross to be left out of things. it's taking agency away from other players and making decisions for them. :/
Vax's most-used phrase 20 episodes ago: "I click boots of haste, dagger-dagger-dagger." His top-phrase now: "And I walk away." :( P.S. I respect Liam a lot for role-playing the moment with Mapmaker according to Tenets of the Raven-Goddess and than showing the moral struggle of his personality against the rule of not pitying the dead.

So as someone who has been doing voice acting here and there over the last year, watching this show is like watching a master class. I've learned so much from these guys, Matt, Laura, and Travis especially.
Mikaela DeLeon - Hahaha, well it's a sort of Renaissance-era now, with Percy very clearly provoking an early Industrial revolution...if we add prosthetics, we're basically in Fullmetal Alchemist. Travis and Laura should fit right in!

You can tell they're both thinking about it because they're the only two still beaming as Matt talks about food scarcity and miserable, starving children. Adorable
@@PhobosDDeimos Laura is far from annoying, as you will discover as you progress. Reading the comments before watching the video always makes me think Marisha is going to be some kind of screeching argumentative harpy during it. Consider my surprise when she turns out to be perfectly pleasant throughout the entire episode, despite a mild miscommunication every now and then. There have certainly been times when I have found myself frustrated with Keyleth's behaviour or Marisha's portrayal during this series, yet I cannot fathom the level of vitriol directed at her for such inconsequential details.
Scott Horn this is so true haha barely an inconvenience and people freak the eff out haha every episode is always super fun to watch and that’s all I care about. Any spell Marisha miss reads never changes that so I honestly don’t care when she does.
Agreed. Everyone has their positives and negatives. For me Laura is kind of annoying since when it comes to her turn in combat she sometimes panics (especially early in the series) and she tends to meta game a lot when it comes to things happening with Vax. Still I enjoy her interactions and how she plays her character overall. It seems like the fan base needs one person in the group to hate. After Orion left they turned their hatred to Marisha.
@@briandalke5946 No most disliked Marisha as well as Orion for the same reasons. Meta-gaming and not paying attention to whats happening when its not their turn.
@@SonnyTolo Well as I mentioned Laura meta-games a lot as well. As for not paying attention Sam is by far the worst for that. Every time the group comes up with a plan they need to explain it all over again because Sam wasn't paying attention and doesn't have a clue what's happening. So I find it odd to see so much hatred directed at Marisha when some of the others are just as bad if not worst in some respects. Now the fact that Marisha sometimes plays her character as a clueless collage drunk is super annoying and I hope she eventually stops that but it doesn't seem enough to justify the hatred the fans seem to have for her.
Everyone has to remember that this isn't their day job. Imagine sitting down at 7pm to play a 3 to 4 hour game of intangibles after a full day of work towards the end of your work week. There's no way they should be expected to remember all the details of all their spells and be able to pay attention to every thing that's going on around them. Their main goal is to have a good time and enjoy one another. I'm just thankful for them allowing us to come along for the ride.
It’s now almost weird for me to hear Liam’s actual accent now because he’s so consistent with the British one while playing that I almost never hear it, so when he does speak in it, it doesn’t feel natural to me even though that is his real one
Is it just me that remembers that Vox Machina were told NOT to reveal that there's a Sphinx at the Slayer's Take and that her mate was also a secret? ... Just me? ... Oh well....
they always have been and always will be woefully stunted at any attempt of keeping secrets. Even in campaign 2, they blab what amounts to state secrets to just about anyone and their mother.
