Alpha's iconic East Ridge rises up from the Squamish River and is a jewel to behold. The route is a Squamish classic in the Tantalus Range, and is a big hike up to Lake Lovely Water, followed by reaching the ridgecrest and looking over the glaciers to the north, then getting on the rock proper with a couple pitches of 5.7-5.8 climbing, which we soloed around to the left on very exposed 4th class scrambling. This was a highly rewarding and fun climb, and I was stoked to do this one with Matt. It was an adventure!
Thanks for watching!

It is! Most of it is pretty solid, but one always has to be careful just in case something is loose.

Did the East Ridge of Alpha years ago. . .one of the best trips ever. . .pretty sketchy finding way down the west ridge of Alpha (some class 4 downclimbing similar to coming off the Black Tusk chimney). . .maybe an easier way than we went. The class 4 ridge up Niobe is also epic (kind of a hidden gem)

Great video and great to see people getting out and exploring our mountains! Brings back great memories. Did the east ridge in late October, 2000 without the bugs. We climbed up the crux ridge but found the goat ledges that you mentioned on he way back down. We were hoofing it that day as we were worried about the short days. Tyroleaning the cable we went car to car in 8 hours with a long summit break and my partner Guy took the boat out from the Alpine club cabin for a quick spin. Such amazing mountains for being so close to Vancouver.

That's why we were both very careful to test all holds before pulling or putting weight on them. That's best practice!

Luke!! It’s your cousin Maxine! I found your RU-vid page and it’s awesome! I’m actually in Washington right now and got to do some hiking. I’ve been wanting to plan a trip to Canada and do some exploring up there. You seem like the right person to talk to about all of the best places to check out. Maybe we can link up and I could learn some stuff! I need to get your number!

Dang Luke looks like you had to do a couple spicy moves on that ridge. Looks like a blast though. Did you descend down a different route? Congrats on not only a challenging climb but also what looked like a super slow moving, tough approach.
@lifeofluke
@lifeofluke Год назад
Yep, I didn't even record the spiciest part, because I was not stopping to pull out a camera. We descended the west ridge which is less exposed, but still quite long

@lifeofluke
@lifeofluke Год назад
Thanks Doug! It was pretty chill at first, then we had to downclimb another steep exposed cliff section, after that just slopes of scree and heather (but long) back to the trail

Does anyone know what the process is for getting a key for the cable car to cross the Squamish River? Helicopter is crazy expensive (which is good because it keeps everyone away and having the area overrun like Garibaldi Lake area which is a circus zoo nowadays and retarded that you have to book 4 months in advance just to get a camping permit in the summer . . .I love being able to head up to Lake Lovelywater (which I think is just as scenic as Garibaldi with no one there and have it all to oneself). . .just crossing the Squamish River to get to the trailhead is a pain in the butt. . .I've done a tyrolean traverse across the river once on the cable (which really sucks at the end of a long trip having to do that to get back to the right side of the river), taken a canoe across another time, and the cable car was unlocked the third time and able to use that. . .would be nice to know how to get a key to unlock it. . .The inflatable raft is a good idea (also I guess renting or borrowing one if not owning specifically for the trip). . .but it would be logistically a lot easier to just be able to take the cable car so need for canoe or inflatable raft at all . . .Also, reluctant to leave a vehicle at the tower on the Squamish side of the river out of concern for having it broken in to when coming down (which seems to an issue at so many remote areas these days) or catalytic convertor sawed off. . . maybe finding someone to drop off and pick up from the point of the paved road (with the short unpaved section down to the tower crossing the Squamish River) (unless someone else has some other thoughts on this). . . or maybe a place to rent a canoe / inflatable raft in Squamish for a few days for the trip would be cool. . I would like to get up there again sometime as it's so nice but just working out this piece of the logistics
