Into The WIND - Tent Performance In High Winds - Hilleberg Jannu Vestibule Vs Tail..

In this video I demonstrate the some of the pros and cons regarding tent pitching orientation in respect of high winds using the Hilleberg Jannu... Hilleberg recommend vestibule into the wind if it's very windy but at what point should you do this? This is a side by side comparison in full mountain conditions at an exposed location... Luke's Mountain Mourne Mountains Northern Ireland, the mountain that tries to kill my tents... All the very best wishes and I hope you enjoy the video... Tom

Hi Tom. Agree with your comments here. I’ve had the Jannu pitched tail into wind in measured 51mph winds and was using the 9mm poles (this is shown as you know on my instagram). While the tent coped well, I found that there was some very minor deformation in the base of the rear poles due to the stress on them. The big issue with this tent that factors into this debate is wind driven rain. Pitched rear into the rain gets under vent cover and if sustained you cannot vent tent and it will eventually leak through zippers. Vestibule into and the Jannu unique feature to Hilleberg top venting models (as far as I know of) is the vent cover wrapping over the arc pole. This seals the top of tent and prevents any water ingress as well as providing additional structural strength to the poles. So in addition to wind speed I always factor in forecast for rain in my decision making. Cheers. Gary

Great point. In the past I have had rain get in via the top hood/vent and in through the porch vent on other Hillys. Also through the vents on the Namattj in wind driven rain in the outer hebrides. Was a pain to try to seal it tbh. Ended up folding and pegging the vent close to the tent. Not ideal as it then takes away from the strength & form. Going back to the Jannu (when cash allows) which I mistakenly sold. Love this tent.

Hey Gary, great to hear your thoughts and I really appreciate you sharing your experience here. I know you have had your Jannu for a while and have done many many camps in harsh conditions. I just haven't had mine long enough to test the options in wind and rain. You have raised great points beyond this testing that will be invaluable to many Jannu or potential owners detailing these pros and cons... Once again thank you for your comments... Really good to see the 2 tents pitched side by side in the same conditions for comparison. Until recently I would never have considered pitching with the main entrance into the wind due to concerns of damage when getting into or out of the tent. You can clearly see from your video that these tents do appear to handle the wind better vestibule into the wind and this orientation provides better separation and more stable inner. Great video, thanks.

Hey John, great to see you watched the video and found it useful... Your Westwind would do well vestibule into the wind too as it is so aerodynamic and the entrance is at the side... This could come in handy if the wind changes or it bounced off the mountain somewhere like the Hare's Gap... I also found the other night that the separation at the back isn't great so when the inner and outer touch in the rain the dampness will appear inside.... best wishes Tom

This is why I like and purchased the tara. It has two entrances. So I have the option to deal with the wind in the door or not. Even if the wind direction changes. Its a little heavier than the jannu but to me its worth it. I can adapt to changing circumstances easier with the options tara provides. Great videos by the way. Thank you for presenting these challenges for us to contemplate and hopefully learn from to perfect our adventures as well.

Had the tarra myself, wind also just slides over it. But the tarra has tons of room for 2 people, far too much for 1 person. The fact that it is total overkill and needs tons of space gets to you. Ended up using the nammat 2 instead.

Thanks for another great video Tom. From comparing the footage in this video and your previous one (which had close ups of Gary’s tent) it looked to me that Gary’s poles didn’t move about as much as yours and his inner was also noticeably less ‘mobile’. If you’re unlikely to pitch vestibule to wind the third pole over the entrance and the long vestibule seem a bit redundant. In fact, it then makes the Unna look very weight efficient by comparison for one person occupancy! 😉

Nice one Tom. I always pitch my Allak with the big end into the wind. This allows the air to flow around the door entrances rather than into them. I was pitching it for the first time recently in approx 25-30mph winds, on my own and it was a real struggle, although the tent was sound once fully pitched. I love the Allak. ATB - Dave

Hi Dave, great have you comment on my video thank you very much.. Awesome to hear your thoughts and experience on setting up the Allak.. With the large wide profile of the Allak I am sure it would catch a fair bit of wind but once fully set up and guyed out as you say very sound and solid. Both Gary and I using the Jannus prefer 10mm poles as they give you a bit more stability especially in the set up before fully guyed out. I had no trouble at all setting up the Jannu in these conditions but it takes time that's for sure.. Hey best wishes... Tom

Good real life conditions comparison there Tom. I think your observations and comments are exactly right. Tail end into the wind and have a better cooking experience.I certainly wouldnt be taking it down and turning it round if the wind direction changed or got up😂. Zip up and wait out the storm whatever way pitched. I reckon those tents wouldn't budge either way.

Ah interesting, the manufacturers typically suggest tail into the wind with semi geo tents, but from experience I've found vestibule into the wind is strongest (3rd crossing pole being the difference, obviously). But as you say, far less practical. That Alistair Grande chap demonstrates this well with the TerraNova Voyager video he did a while back. Interesting review. What would also be of interest, pressure gauges on the guy lines which record, indicate just how much and where the stress is. Especially when set up diagonally and in blowing rain/sleet/snow. Of course wind direction varies but the peaks, spikes and constant numbers would probably surprise people. Tom take care. Get out when you can. Be safe.

I almost purchased a Hilleberg Jannu with it's ability to perform in the wind in mind.. But ended up buying the red label soulo instead.. There's another RU-vid video of two lads camping out on a UK mountain in the Hilleberg Jannu and damaged it in wind. They used 9mm poles as standard without double poling, and vestibule into the wind. Though it was damaged as they likely let enough air in to destabilise it's structure. Without 10mm poles and without double poles I'd imagine they didn't double peg either. Attention to detail - quite literally saves lives. Thanks again for your videos on these tents.
@alaskaraftconnection-alask3397
My observations would indicate Hilleberg Jannu orientation for set-up at its best high wind pitch and importantly wind-driven rains = having entry (and vestibule) faced into the wind. The good thing is that at the recorded/verified 45MPH wind speeds (w/ likely higher gusts) it did not appear to matter all that much in terms of overall stability, shelter comforts, and reliability. Wind-driven rains however could be the distinction and game changer scenario. Admittedly... I do not prefer having my entry faced into high winds, because I am typically going to be conservative and more concerned with higher probabilities for zipper issues. One factor/question may be worthy of mention... Was setting up any different (more challenging or time consuming) for this experiment? Good stuff. Hope all is well in your camp Tom.
@TOMHEANEY100
@TOMHEANEY100 Год назад
Hey great to hear from you and receive your feedback.. No real difference regarding the set up as these tents are built from the ground up.. The wind load either on the back or front of the tent caused no issues clipping in any way... . For most camps I will continue with tail into the wind but once I predict gusts over 50mph it's time to switch... Hey best wishes Tom

@TOMHEANEY100 Hi, Thanks for the reply. Ah, it's just me being obsessive about detail - sometimes it's not until after I've asked a question that I realise that it was probably a bit too specific.
