Crescent-shaped high wall built in 1773 to reinforce the Baluartillo de San Francisco Javier. Construction was part of the overall reinforcement of Manila’s fortification after the successful British siege during the Seven Years War.

This man-made canal joined the Pasig River and Manila Bay, making Fort Santiago a formidable fortress-island. The moat was filled-in with earth by the early 20th Century, and eventually re-dug and restored by the Intramuros Administration in the 1980s.

Originally a storage facility for gunpowder and arms before it was converted into a prison cell during the 17th Century. The cells can hold about a hundred persons at most, but as many as 600 decomposing and unrecognized bodies were found forcibly cramped inside after World Ward II.

On 30 December 1896, Jose Rizal made his final walk from Fort Santiago to Bagumbayan. He was accompanied by Jesuits priests Fr. Estanislao March and Fr. Jose Vilaclara, his counsel Lt. Luis Taviel de Andrade, and a military escort. At 7:03 in the morning, Rizal was executed by a firing squad. His executioners took the form of a typical execution detail numbering sixteen (16) men arrayed in two (2) ranks. Tasked to shoot Rizal were Indios or Filipino soldiers as front lines; due to the Spanish distrust of Filipino soldiers, eight (8) Spanish soldiers were positioned behind the frontlines ready to shoot them if they missed a shot. After the order of fuego was given, Rizal was on the ground with a wound in his back. The Commander of the execution gave hive a tiro de gracia or a shot him on the head to ensure his death.
14:06 Postigo and Paseo Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
Postern (small gate) once used as an escape route during instances of siege or emergency, such as during the Seven Years War when Governor Simon de Anda escaped the British following this route. The public promenade, opened in 2017, historically served as a wharf for the army.
16:54 Rajah Sulayman Theater
The mural, created in 2018, pays homage to Rajah Sulayman, the 16th Century lord of Manila who bravely but unsuccessfully defended his land against Spanish invasion.
