Starting Tech week with how 3D printers work, and if they're useful in the woodwork workshop. I bought this one myself, no sponsor on this video. I wanted to explain how it works and how much it costs.

Hi Dean, never thought of getting into 3D printing, but you have tickled my interest. As an old school Tool Maker I can now see that these machines can open up a load of possibilities. When I think of all the prototypes I build to prove a concept, and these were made from steel or aluminium you can imagine the hours of sweat and blood spent filling and tweaking to get thing right. Anyway love your chanel and more please. I can so relate to your struggle. Thanks

Thank you! I really wanted to explain how 3D stuff can help in the workshop because I think a lot of people see this stuff as having no use in a workshop

Well I bit the bullet Dean and bought one, not the most expensive but The newish Creality Ender 3 V3 SE, bloomin' love it. I have had it for about a fortnight and it has been banging out stuff almost every day. Bench dogs, paint stands (little triangle things) I have made endless vacuum adapters, taking your guidance, the excellent Camlock system. I have made feather boards for my router table and table saw, and emergency stop paddle for the table saw, mitre slot rails, you name it I have made it, I have even printed off 16 new plastic feet for the dining room chairs, brownie points earned. Brilliant bit of kit.

I'd definitely recommend a self levelling bed. I've got a creality CR-10 and the one thing that's given me the most pain is getting the first layer down reliably.
@WoodworkJourney
@WoodworkJourney 10 месяцев назад
Absolutely, I remember the absolute pain in the bum of bed levelling. I used to have to do it with every single print on the A8, used to drive me crazy

Nice vid as usual Dean, surprised to see you pop up for 3d printing as I follow your woodwork stuff! I've been printing about the same amount of time, depending on what the thing is i'm making I'll usually use PETG for anything that's going to be load bearing or used outside etc and PLA for pretty models etc. I've made shelf brackets, door hinges for my shed, corner screw points (not sure what theyd be called really that I used for constructing a 3dprinting bench out of old melamine wardrobe sides. Hardest thing I've found with 3dprinting (excluding tinkering and the learning curve) is working out what I want to print! So seeing some of the things you've printed is very useful! Thanks!!
@WoodworkJourney

Working out what you want to print is definitely the challenge, I think my printer was going constantly for two weeks when I got it, I wanted to print everything! 😂

Hi Dean 3d printing is skilled when you talk about the programming for me it’s when some people say hand made and yes a lot of things are made easier that way than handmade but time will tell of its use ability and life span. Good vid enjoy all your vids
@WoodworkJourney
@WoodworkJourney 10 месяцев назад
Cheers Phil, thing is, 3D printing is something anyone can do with a few buttons. It’s the creating models from the deep crevices of your brain that’s the hard bit lol

@@WoodworkJourney very true but I read somewhere if you can think it then you can do it and 3d printing is going to be the in thing soon you’ll just think it and it will appear on a conveyer belt

I bought a 3D printer purely as something to tinker with, trouble is during this tinkering I came up a design for Dewalt tool boxes that I sell on eBay. That really wasn't my intention and it hasn't left me time to tinker as the printer is just making this parts. Now looking at a second printer for tinkering and that Neptune 3 looks promising, good price too.

Well blow me down, your video came up in my feed because of 3d printing, and I thought mmm I know that face, then it clicked. Its the vaping biker, wondered where you went. anyway I have just taken delivery of the Prusa xl 5 head printer, its brilliant. I also have 2 Prusa MK3, whit I will be upgrading to Prusa MK4 some time in the future. JUst designing and printing coaster's for my daughter and son in law to give people to remind them of their wedding. I have also made lithophane lamp shades, they are amazing

Hi Dean, I've watched your next video before this as i might be getting the bug. Will you be doing more on the 'Make your own stuff' like the fill in discs for your MFT. Where do you start creating? how do you start creating? It will be hard enough for me to just download the completed files and use them so don't know if i will be able to "design' my own stuff. Any ideas?
@WoodworkJourney

Yes I’d hoped to have finished ‘tech week’ with my full process regarding design and slicer, unfortunately I ran out of time. I will absolutely be showing how I do it in a future video though

Cool vid Dean! :) Tip - get yourself some stainless steel nozzles. Not only do they allow you to print abrasive materials but they are waaaaay less likely to clog, are easier to swap out and are easier to clean. They also seem to hold temperature better too.

Hi Dean, love your channel but unfortunately the same thing as happened with Karl pope woodcraft seems to be happening where your videos aren’t being recommended. Don’t get disheartened if you’re getting lower viewing figures. Keep doing what you’re doing, those who like it will continue to like it! And I’ve got your last five videos to catch up on!👍

A great and useful video as always, catch you soon take care👍

Hi Dean, thanks for sharing this, I definitely have the bug for trying this. Is there a costing process for each project?, would be interested to know. Great channel, keep up the good work
@WoodworkJourney
@WoodworkJourney 10 месяцев назад
For me, no there isn’t. As I mentioned though some slicing software will give you the costs for the print. I don’t do client work though so don’t factor costs into my stuff - I think as I make RU-vid videos it would be mortally depressing finding out I work hard for 2p an hour or something lol
