"If nobody wins the fight, you won." Amazing advice. Taking my first lesson tomorrow. 48 years old and am just fascinated with Jiu Jitsu. What an amazing art.
BJJ is what gave me my soul back after surviving years of brutal domestic violence and an attempted murder by someone much heavier, taller and stronger than myself. I was constantly living in a fearful and traumatized state of mind, even long after the aggressor was gone. Maybe even more so. I got sick of constantly questioning how to be truly free, without becoming an aggressor, without becoming helplessly dependant on the mercy of bigger, scarier people in this world. I finally found BJJ as an answer to that question and I'm forever in its debt, truly. It's nothing short of phenomenal what your body can do once you stop making yourself so small in your own mind.
Holly Rey Hi Holly. I just wanted to let you know that I will be praying for you tonight. I want you to know that you have been fearfully and wonderfully made by the God of Heaven and earth who sent His Son for people like you and i so we can have everlasting life in Him. You have tremendous worth because you have been made by God, and He wants you to come back to Him through repentance and faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. I’m really sorry to hear about the struggles you’ve had. I don’t claim to understand them but i hope this encourages you.
@@BenNocella I appreciate you and your beautiful, kind words 💖 I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for all the amazing people like you He has put in my path. Thank you for your prayers, I will certainly be thanking God tonight for utilizing your kindness to remind me of my blessings. Stay lovely, I really needed this tonight 💖
I'm a 5'4", 120lb, 20yo woman taking my first bjj class in a couple days after a man I don't know grabbed my waist in a coffee shop last week.I'm excited to move beyond paralyzing fear to having some confidence in my ability to keep myself safe!
Do you plan on fighting some guy in a coffee shop? You are a tiny woman, never a start a fight with any man. Call for help. Don't go to sketchy places alone or if you have to, bring a man, or a gun, or a german shepherd with you.
I can tell you as a woman, it truly helps! Altough i trained muay thai, which is a totally different kind of sport. I stopped because it was a bit too brutal for my liking and now im really looking into jiu jitsu techniques and want to start too! But just the confidence in yourself helps you to prevent something happening, because usually the perpetrators target those who look like they're already scared. I used to be like that.
"If nobody wins the fight, you won. Especially if the opponent is bigger, heavier, and stronger than you are" Yes!!! After training BJJ for about 3 years I was assaulted by a man on the street. He was certainly bigger, heavier, and stronger plus had the element of surprise on his side. Thanks to BJJ I was able to control the situation, defend myself, and fight back until he decided to bail on the fight. Adrenaline was flowing, I was in full on flight or flight mode, but I was comfortable and in my element due to so many hours of drilling and rolling. BJJ can literally be a life saver.
finally...a martial arts teacher that recognizes the aspect of being tired during a fight and how to deal with that dynamic....this guy is a fight scientist....love it
i find it a little sexist that no one has even considered a GIRL being able to fight or do self defence. also the name of your channel is just as bad "art of manliness" i will have you all know that there are girl fighters in the world that could take down 99% of you
+minecraft songs Hope you got over it. Feminist attitudes like that are childish. (If you are young, never mind. I can't expect a child to not be childish.) The channel, which is pretty ironic in nature, seems to be for men who want to become better men. Maybe I can find a channel for women that I can complain about too. I'm here because I love BJJ. ABSOLUTELY NOBODY, especially Rener Gracie, will ever claim that women aren't tough or able to fight or defend themselves. I roll with women all the time: and yes, some of them are way better than me. You read too much into this.
Art of manliness, these videos explaining the history & basic techniques of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu are fascinating. It's making me want to get back in to martial arts.
Im happy I stumbled upon your videos! Not because you're a Gracie, but because you are very informative, interesting, and have a great way of teaching, even if it's through a computer screen. I can tell you care a lot about what and who you are teaching just by your gestures. Hope to train with you or any of the Gracie family one day! Thank you!
This is a brilliant fighting style, there's so much to it that your average person (me) wouldn't understand without watching it with commentary. Amazing.
I've been a fan of MMA for more than a decade now, and I can say that grappling part of any fight is a HUGE part, it's incredibly important and it can turn any fight upside down at any moment. Everybody who underestimates technique is plain wrong, HOWEVER I notice people lately tend to underestimate strength and size factors too, which is just as wrong...For example one great grappler can beat much bigger and stronger opponent than himself, but imagine that opponent being much bigger, twice as strong AND knowing how to grapple just as good as the first guy :) the first guy has very slim chances of winning in any way :) So in a nutshell I believe that one should not underestimate anything, everything matters at a right place and at the right time, it's up to us to use our self defense tools the best we can given the situation we are in, and, of course, to first avoid the violent confrontation as hard as we can, before actually getting into a fight.
I’m 53, and I go to class three time’s a week, and my favorite to roll is in full guard. I had to learn that keeping my breathing in control, and that it’s not a race to win. Thanks for the video.
Rener, you are an amazing teacher. Your'e clarity, enthusiasm, and teaching style are second to none. Thanks Art of Manliness for sharing this series of videos.
Some people simply don't know about or understand how affective Gracie Jiu Jitsu is. There is an answer for every scenario or skill set you can think of. #Respect #Professor #Rener #Gracie on the highest level #Oss. --CMC
Such good advice. I started Gracie Jujitsu this week, and although feeling saw and a bit beaten up after three classes I absolutely love it. Great environment, really supportive and constructive place to learn. Plus it’s the best exercise I’ve done in years 😊
dude, the way you describe things is so awesome. you’re an awesome salesman. some people just don’t have a great way of explaining concepts and learning from them is so hard. you on the other hand are just amazing.
Watching this high is on another level. Its like it just makes so much and blows my mind how distance and connection control can totally manipulate another person's body. I might just sign up for Jiu Jitsu classes next week 😮🤯
In the 1980s the Gracie family stood out from the ocean of charlatans in the magazines/publications they are the real deal their technique is top and they train hard. I am glad to see this family still winning 30 years after i used to follow their fights this family have been winning for over 90 years!!!! That says how effective their method of training is.
I just realized, if you had the ability to slow down time, you could counter any technique, standing or on the ground. Which is why personal pocket time machines are not available for the general populace.
I've been training for almost 24 years and this is one of the single best videos ever made on pure self-defense. If you only learned this, you could likely defend yourself against 75-80% of the general population.
I never heard of Gracie jiu-jitsu until I went to ft benning ga, now I'm absolutely addicted to it. 15 years later I still practice and teach it to my children
Such a amazing well communicated videos ! Thank you for making these , I searched jiu Jitsu as I’m starting mid May, coming from boxing, and I couldn’t be more excited after seeing these quick videos ! Thank you
Noooo no no. Last thing a girl should do when there’s an attacker is to try to take it to the ground. Kick a dude in the dick or something before ever going to the ground.
What's the odds in that scenario actually happening?? the average Street fighter is satisfied with landing hay makers, you'd even have a edge against a semi decent boxer. I've had too many fights to count, only clearly lost once and it was coincidentally to a guy more disciplined at MMA than I was at the time. 😂 I had it coming, tho, I thought I was a ninja turtle who could beat everyone. one thing I can say is most mma guys will take it easier on you, compared to a street fighter who's liable to kick you while your down. smh
I wish this guy was my Teacher! I start my first day of BJJ today. I have a strong feeling once I learn/master BJJ i will have High confidence in myself to talk to people more.
I have a story with a Jiu Jitsu guy, I've seen him defending a friend and fucking up a huge modafuka, i mean... completely destroyed in a few seconds, was scary to watch how easily he managed to keep himself calm and the way he controlled all that, was insane. Much respect for you guys, spider-man does exist, lemme dream! Hehe, Propz from Portugal!
6:04-6:22 the best message I’ve heard this entire day. I would not mind learning from this guys videos. He reminds me of my dad when he tries to teach me wrestling
I've been doing jujitsu for almost 2 years now and I love it, its saved my ads in a few street fights..does the owner of this channel train in jujitsu? If not you really should
+david obryan just curious, how often do you get injured in bjj? More so your hands and fingers but just curious in general also. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. God Bless
injuries are pretty rare in brazilian jujitsu during training due to the fact that your teammates go at a pace that is challenging but they are not out to kill you in competition however injuries are slighty more common do to the competitiveness of the sport, but are still rare themselves most of my injuries have been minor.bruises scrapes and minor mat burns mostly,my most serious one had to of been a bruised rib....but i do have to state thate serious injuries in all combat sports and martials arts are a possiblity and stuff like dislocated shoulders do happen but as long as yuou use some common sense you will be fine.my finers and hands have never been injured and have never heard of it happing to anyone else.i would deff try it out brazilian jujitsu has changed me life
i forgot what year it was cuz ive had to stop and then start again a aslot because of work and what not and dude there are SOOOO many moves to learn you will over whelm yourself if you think of it like that start with the basics and keep doing them and it will come to you i promise, but i say after around the 5th month mark i was reallt starting to get the jist of it and understand the art
BJJ is self defense. It's not really an active offensive combat art but more of a defensive tool. Being good at BJJ will depend on your flexibility and ability to focus on the task at hand. Distance control.
Kris P go watch the Gracie challenge vids and see how “defensive” they are lol BJJ can be every bit as offensive as the person practicing it would like it to be
This is remarkable, and again, you are at this moment in time one of my favorite person on the planet. What is the defense for groin attacks? This whole time he is trying to strike at your head but I would love to know what is the groin defense . Thanks again . This is remarkable.
I feel like Brazilian jiu-jitsu is for people who don’t want to use their knowledge to fight or hurt people, it is for people who want to avoid fights at all costs
Oh man... I am BLOWN AWAY! GREAT! FANTASTIC! Rener! You are AMAZING. ...As is your partner! Thank you guys for this splendid kindling of passion for ju-jitsu (wrestle-dancing).
I love this young Man! Rener Gracie! I love the way you explain Sir. Iike I saw myself teaching something. You are close to my age Sir! Thank you so much Much! for giving teachings for us!. Man this guys don't know. How lucky they are! #RenerGracie 👊👊♥️♥️🇵🇭
I am very fortunate to say that l trained Gracie Jiu-jítsu at Cronulla Beach , Sydney Australia with black belt from Rio de Janeiro Barra-Gracie Bruno Panno and Royler Gracie came for a workshop and he trained us for a while , man meeting Royler was the highlight of my life and training with him was out of this planet , Bruno Panno did amazing things for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu down under Australia, Bruno Panno used to train a Australia fighter he is my bro too great Ian “The Shark”Schaffa Ian is a “Machine” , I was dealing with some personal issues back then and Bruno took me in and he was so kind to me and Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most awesomest thing I can think of back in 2003-2004-2005 . Awesome lessons . Royler and Bruno Panno I am so grateful for it all from the deepest of my heart 🇦🇺🙏🏼💪🏼🌟💫✨🦅
awesome as i want to learn jiu jitsu bad, bud i dont like the not brutalizing his face part if someone attacks me i want to make sure they feel it for as long as possible break one of there bones
Either palm strikes or heavy blows to the stomach will do the trick. The idea behind a palm strike is you won't damage the bones (in your hand and in their body) as much and it would most likely leave a bruise or slightly damage muscle tissue slightly, you are 100% able to knock someone out with a palm strike the same way you could with a punch.
+SkippedRecord ~ i would love to learn more about "palm strikes" ... i think i'll do a search, youtube and maybe google... thanks for posting the idea, i forgot about these underated strikes, as you don't see them a lot in modern combat sports.....
+H.D.Instrumental People are asking this a lot here. Not only is it awkward to punch over the knees, but if they try you can collapse back down into guard and force them to miss, or push away with feet on their hips. Also, look at the angle, you said it yourself: the dick. I don't want anyone punching my dick but it's the testicles that really hurt, and that's why the knees are together. You won't win the fight with an awkward arm-punch to the dick.
For one, the fact that when proper technique is applied the other guy would be biting his own arm. And 2, he's got 5 seconds before cutting the blood flow to the brain makes him unconscious (not exaggerating, talking from self experience)
