Substitution reactions can have really powerful effects, both good and bad, in our bodies. You might remember substitution reactions as displacement reactions from general chemistry, but (you guessed it!) in organic chemistry they’re a bit more complicated. In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry, we’ll learn about the two pathways substitution reactions can take: SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, which substrates prefer which mechanism, and we’ll apply this knowledge by looking at how substitution reactions make chemotherapy treatments work.

Even with a background in chemistry, I REALLY struggle with organic chemistry! I definitely find it the hardest part. Out of all the organic chemistry videos, I find yours the most accessible and easy to follow though. As you keep the jargon and details to a minimum and do worked examples too. I love your analogies like nucleophiles being bullies trying to get onto merry-go-round and pushing off another person for Sn2 reaction! And giving historical context with regards to WW1 chemical warfare as starting point for creating anticancer drugs and how they work at DNA level. My degree was biochemistry so I love this aspect! Gives organic chemistry a more meaningful context and makes more interesting - especially for those going into medicine! Rather than never ending pathways of reactions, which just make my head hurt! Thanks again :)

Are these endothermic or exothermic? Do these qualify as any other type of reaction like redox?

A question about the products of the reaction Why do we have formation of HBr strong acid from Br- even that Br- is a very weak base on its own it cannot take a proton. Can we form strong acid HBr or HCl just from H+ + Cl- --> HCl ?

@void2509
@void2509 3 года назад
In solution, there is no HCl or HBr. If any HCl enters water, it will dissociate into H+ and Cl-. There is no HCl is solution, and if there is H+ and Cl- in solution, you can say it is a solution of HCl, and if u distill it, u will get HCl.
