Intro to the 4 ACT PLOT STRUCTURE (What are plot beats?)

The 4 Act Structure is one of the most important tools I use when I'm plotting a story (right after the Story Circle, which we talked about a year ago). This structure splits your story into 4 parts: the Setup, the Response, the Attack, and the Resolution. Today, I'm giving you a brief overview of all four parts, and in the next few videos, we'll go over each part more in-depth. At the end of this series, I'll show you how these plot beats fit into the Story Circle so you can use them together.
Let's get into it!

I realized 3-act structure was really 4 acts as soon as i learned about the midpoint crisis. Lately, I’ve seen 4 acts, 8 sequences, & so on, & it's very gratifying to see writers pushing back against dogma & being realistic about how stories are really structured.

I’m currently digging into Eight Sequence. I think it makes sense in many ways. As a beginner still learning craft, I need these tools until I begin to internalize the bigger concepts and develop my individual process. For me, it’s not about bucking the system just for the sake of it. That said, once I know the “rules” then I can extrapolate and tweak and create something unique. Hopefully I can appeal to readers’ ingrained sense of how they like to be told a story - in a way that works for them. Take care!

In my notes I put down, "A Taste of Victory/Defeat: Victory is almost within reach. The worst is overcome, but the costs must be reckoned with." I think if you're going to show what victory would look like, an accounting of the losses should be included so the hero is aware what the next step is going to cost.

14:32. YES!!! I KNEW there was a reason you were striking a chord with me! This is the fourth video of yours I watched. I heard hints and signs of her in your other videos; but then you spoke her name: Abbie Emmons 😂😂. More than anything else, I have her and her channel content to thank for inspiring me to pursue learning craft!! I stalk her channel. I have a whole playlist dedicated to her vids! I love her “Write with me” sessions too! When you started talking about fear and misbelief driving the character’s actions and going after what they want while steering clear of what they fear - the way you said it made me immediately think of Abbie. While I love how she has presented Three Act, I really love that you have officially split that Second Act by the midpoint! It adds to my understanding that you are talking about what Acts 2 & 3 should each accomplish. Of course I’ve heard of Act 2 A and Act 2 B before, which split the second Act in two but the labels / descriptions you’re using for the acts really does add something for me! Going even further into structure, I’m going to create a hybrid and drop down Eight Sequence structure on top of the Four Act! Curious what you think about that? Four Act and Eight Sequence used in conjunction with the way you explained scene/sequel structure (scene level craft) makes me super excited to try outlining my brain dump so far so that I can start “breaking” my story. My first WIP will be a romantic thriller so pacing will be key - although I’m considering going more suspense than thriller with it. Must have lots of plot twists too so plotting and outlining will be my only hope 😂😂😂. Anyway sorry so long on this but just so cool that you and I are on the same page about Abbie! I love her brain science / psychology take on telling Story and I bet you do too! You and I might have to part ways about the Story Circle though…I’ll watch the video you allude to in this one that will tie everything together - but so far, it doesn’t resonate for me. I hope you made a full recovery from Covid. Take care and keep going with your channel!

Oh WOW! I've watched other vids on 4-act structure (and 3-act and 7-point and even 5 act structures) and could not for the life of me figure out which one I've spent the last four years writing ^_^; But this video finally rephrased it in exactly the right way and I can FINALLY identify all of the subpoints you mentioned and it is such a RELIEF!! It turns out that some of them were different than I was thinking, but they are definitely all there and they all make sense, now!! THANK-YOU!!!

How something is phrased is so often the difference between illumination and confusion when it comes to the craft of storytelling.

Your enthusiasm is wonderful. I am a tech project manager and a director of photography. I have a theory that adapting hero’s journey script writing to project management reduces project risk, noting a Ying yang relationship between the two. Your four act process brought me closer to my ambition.

could you give us some example movie names that fits in the 4 act structure.
@nataliesea
@nataliesea 3 месяца назад
I did a video series on how the movie Megamind fits into the 4 act structure, but to give you some more examples: Prey, Us, Nope, the first LOTR movie (the whole series follows the structure but it can be harder to follow after the first movie), Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and so many more! If you watch my ChatGPT plot structures video, I talk a little about how any movie that uses the Save the Cat structure also technically fits the 4 act structure. Happy writing!

How is Crossing the Threshold different from Plot Point 1?
@nataliesea
@nataliesea 8 месяцев назад
Plot point 1 is a point of no return that changes the character and their journey and happens before the first pinch point, whereas crossing the threshold is the same plot point as “break into 2” which basically marks a transition into the second act and happens post-pinch point. I hope that helps!
